Guest guest
That sounds more like too much oestrogen and not enough progesterone, from what I have read in Dr Lee's books http://www.johnleemd.com/ or even hypothyroidism, rather than hyperthyroidism. Sorry I can't cite any references, but I hope other people will be able to. Guest guest
Hi Miriam Thank you so much for your reply and the link you gave. The Endo said that my Daughter's thyroid isn't producing enough thyroxine and that she have thyroxine. Our GP stated that his concern is my Daughter having thyroxine treatment when she didn;t need it (in his opinion not the Endos) that taking it would cause all of the heavy bleeding, frequent, painful periods.. She does have oestrogen dominance however. So am I right in thinking that our Gp has got it slightly wrong do you think? I mean her Endo is a specialist foremost in the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal and the sex hormones. He would know wouldn't he? Thank you again for your kind reply. Guest guest
Hi Vicky, under our list of Symptoms of Hypothyroidism, under Menstrual disorders is listed: ???? Cessation of periods (amenorrhoea) ???? Scanty (light) periods (oligomenorrhoea) ???? Heavy periods (menorrhagia) ???? Infertility ???? Premenstrual syndrome/tension (PMS/PMT) ???? Endometriosis Luv - Sheila Our GP today informed me that having thyroxine when you don't need it can be the cause of heavy, frequent painful periods. Guest guest
PLEASE SNIP YOUR MESSAGES MIRIAM. I HAVE DONE IT THIS TIME. Moderator. I'm glad to see Sheila agreed with me about the hypothyroidism! :-) I have been reading this group for a few years now, and this is the first time I have read of a GP thinking that taking too much thyroxine (supposing it was too much) could cause heavy bleeding, etc. Yes, he could be wrong. Why not? No-one is infallible. Miriam
Guest guest
Hi Sheila Thank you for your reply and the information. I thought that heavy painful periods was a sign of being underactive with the thyroid, but I didn't think that light and cessation of periods is also a sign. So according to our GP heavy, frequent and painful periods are also caused by too much thyroxine or having thyroxine tablets when you don't need it.. Because of the 24hr thyroid urine function test done by genova and the results which I showed to the head doctor at our surgery he noted that her T4 was indeed low and started my Daughter on a trial dose of thyroxine. At the time our usual GP was on a sabbatical otherwise he would never have seen it that way. He is not very well informed. Thinks he is which is quite frightening really. Even her new Endo said that her thyroid is under producing, and he specialises only in the thyroid, the pituitary the adrenals and the hormones in the body, not diabetes first and foremost. Once again thank you for the information you sent me. kind regards Vickyanne From: Sheila <sheila@...>Subject: RE: HEAVY, FREQUENT PERIODS AND TOO MUCH THYROXINEthyroid treatment Date: Thursday, 3 February, 2011, 16:48 Hi Vicky, under our list of Symptoms of Hypothyroidism, under Menstrual disorders is listed: 􀂉 Cessation of periods (amenorrhoea) 􀂉 Scanty (light) periods (oligomenorrhoea) 􀂉 Heavy periods (menorrhagia) 􀂉 Infertility 􀂉 Premenstrual syndrome/tension (PMS/PMT) 􀂉 Endometriosis Luv - Sheila Kind regards to allVickyanne
Guest guest
HI My Daughter had heavy periods and started early aged 11, plus being a problem with constipation. She lost her first child while still on the pill which they would not take away although the baby had died, as she must have had an infection which they were treating first. She had a son, but had more miscarriages until diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, but sadly the third child suffered from brain damage due to a problem with the placenta.I think your GP is wrong, but Ostrogen and progresterone appear to be involved in thyroid problems. Guest guest
Hi I have Graves disease – ie my body is producing way, way, way too much thyroxine and I have had irregular, very heavy and painful periods. So your GP is right, that can happen. However, I have also had scant, light and very irregular periods whilst I was also hyper. I think menstrual trouble can be a sign of thyroid imbalance one way or the other. I don’t think it’s a reason to not treat someone though. I was told by a gynaecologist two years ago that the only way to treat my irregular, heavy periods was to have my womb removed (I kid you not, I was 36!! I said NO obviously) – if the dimwit had checked my thyroid he would have given me a totally different piece of advice. And of course, as my thyroid hormones slowly stabilise on my treatment I am now back on a 28 day cycle, which is a miracle as I was having periods every ten days, but they are still heavy, but getting better. Also, an integrative doctor diagnosed me with oestrogen dominance, but when in fact I had my sex hormones tested, I was perfectly balanced. I think until your thyroid is stable it’s a bit hard to know what’s what with other hormonal issues. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Hi , I too has uncontrollably heavy periods-causing anaemia- I was hypo taking T4 only. I decided to have the hysterectomy at 38 so I could get on with my life. If I had been aware of the existence of other thyroid treatments and been able to get them, maybe things would have been different, but for me it was a sensible solution to an unbearable problem. I now have full control of my hormones as I can adjust both oestrogen and progesterone if needed. thyroid treatment From: rebecca@...Date: Fri, 4 Feb 2011 08:47:19 +0000Subject: Re: HEAVY, FREQUENT PERIODS AND TOO MUCH THYROXINE Hi I have Graves disease – I was told by a gynaecologist two years ago that the only way to treat my irregular, heavy periods was to have my womb removed (I kid you not, I was 36!! Guest guest
Hi Thank you so much for your mail and it does help. I had never heard before that having thyroxine, too much thyroxine in the body, could cause all of the above. Thanks ago for taking the time to read my message and replying to me. Keep well. Guest guest
Hi Angel Thank you very much for your reply. Interesting reading regading the progesterone. My daughter did try it a couple of months ago and since she stopped it the problem has been far far worse. You say to try oestrogen cream - my Daughter is oestrogen dominant wouldn't that add to the dominanace? or did you mean it as a form of contraceptio? Thank again Angel. Take care Vickyanne From: judith franklin <angel47572000@...>Subject: HEAVY, FREQUENT PERIODS AND TOO MUCH THYROXINEthyroid treatment Date: Friday, 4 February, 2011, 12:01 Hi there, me thinks he not that well informed about female problems. use only natural products. doctors will sometimes prescribe natural progesterone suppositories or cream, but will try to get you to have the synthetic which can cause more problems than they cure. try to get natural progesterone from the doctor-this will take about three months to kick in, but could work for you. if not you can buy it privately address in our files. also you could try natural oestrogen cre
Guest guest
Vickyanne, your daughter sounds as if she needs to get back onto Serenity Cream to help balance her oestrogen and progesterone levels. I would do this without delay. Some people express enormous surprise at the terrific effect using progesterone cream has on their health. Luv - Sheila Interesting reading regading the progesterone. Guest guest
Hi , how do you do this? I am deficient in both oestrogen and progesterone. I have found a source of natural progesterone (Serenity), but not one of natural oestrogen. The only oestrogen creams I have found are designed to " balance " your oestrogen, rather than supplement it. Guest guest
Thanks, . I still get hot flushes, and have had them for 20 years now, but my GP is not interested in the fact that my lab tests show low hormone levels. She just said categorically that they never prescribe natural hormones. They might prescribe synthetic ones if you could show the imbalance was making you very ill. Miriam > I have Sandrena oestrogen gel prescribed by my GP- this was post hysterectomy- I still got some hot flushes, then on dr. P's advice a few years later I added in Serenity. I reduced the oeastrogen by a half and still avoid the hor flushes, and have been stable since. now due to my age my GP wants me to stop the HRT, but if I try to reduce it I still get the hot flushes- so understandably I'm not keen!
