Guest guest
Dear All and Sheila, It is ages since I last posted on here - although I do read through all the posts each and every day.... my own hypo is under control on Erfa NDT and I'm doing very well.... At the begining of last year my 34 year old daughter was dx with thyroid issues - she has - like I was - monitored by her doctor with blood tests - the last test was taken last week. Today, her docter called her - wanted to see her about her test results... she has emailed them to me - here they are: thyroid function test serum free T4 level: 9.8pmol/L (11.0 - 23.0) serum TSH level : 7.1 mu/L ( 0.3 - 5.5 ) Dr ? has given me Levithyroxine 50 micrograms, one a day in the morning. The brand name is actavis. I have 28 tablets. he said i should have another blood test in 4 weeks. She is to start taking these tomorrow. Can anyone comment on the tests at all... she tells me that she is very cold, has put quite a bit of weight on lately - but could that be due to the xmas choccies?? Apart from that at the moment she is not displaying many of the hypo symptoms... expect they will come on in time... Any comments will be so appreciated... Since you say she is starting tomorrow on the Levo, I must assume that her GP has indeed waited before treating her until the TSH has finally overstepped the mark and your poor daughter has been suffering needlessly all this time - the RCP really has a lot to answer for !! (( As you no doubt know, with results like that your daughter has now officially joined our ranks and she is in desperate need of thyroid hormone. Starting on 50 mcg Levo for a young person with (presumably) no heart trouble is fine. She could split the tablet and start on 25 mcg is she were very sensitive and wanted to be on the safe side, but she should have no trouble going straight to 50 mcg. Please tell her to take the pill either first thing in the morning, at least one hour before breakfast, or she could take it last thing at night (also on an empty stomach). Some people do better on night-time dosing. Since your daughter has already had thyroid symptoms for about a year, can I assume all the other issues like poss. low adrenals and/or Candida have already been addressed? – if not, it's the same procedure you went through – questionnaires to fill in, Genova tests if needed and the appropriate support in form of supplements. Regardless of adrenal status or poss. Candida, she should take Selenium, Vit C and Co-Q10 to support the absorption and utilization of thyroid hormone and in addition ask her GP for the mineral & vit check (ferritin, folate, magnesium, zinc, copper, Vit B12 and Vit D3) and supplement whichever is low, if any. If it were me, I would give Levothyroxine a chance for at least 6 months .... it might work for her – if not.... well, you know the drill ;o)) Good luck and best wishes for your daughter, Carol, love,
Guest guest
Hi Carol I would suggest to your daughter that she asks her doctor to test her blood to see if she has any antibodies to her thyroid, especially as you suffer with hypothyroidism. Have you ever been tested to see whether you have Hashimoto's as a cause of your hypothyroidism Carol? She should also, at this time, ask to have the following tested to ensure all her minerals and vitamins are in order: ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc. She should take 15mgs zinc and 200mcgs Selenium along with her thyroxine and these are essential to help with the conversion of T4 into T3. Getting her to come back in four weeks isn't going to be of much help though, as it takes at least 6 weeks for the 4 to be fully utilised. More thyroid function testing should be done after 6 to 8 weeks. Your daughter might also want to experiment by taking the thyroxine at night when she goes to bed as a couple of trials have shown that people sleep better and they feel brighter in a morning. Hopefully, she will convert well and have little or no problems, but if she starts to suffer more, then point her in our direction. Guest guest
We will soon be producing leaflets for all those suffering with a thyroid disease that they can either pick up in their doctors surgery or download from the Internet. This will take time, but it will be done.
