Guest guest
Hi Debbie..SST could stand for Short Synacthen Test..this tests your bodies cortisol levels by injecting you with Adrenocorticotropic Hormone & measuring the amount of cortisol released.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACTH_stimulation_testYou should contact your doctor to find out for certain.~Andy~Could anyone please tell me what a SST is, as I have to have one on Thursday.. Guest guest
Hi Debbie..Could anyone please tell me what a SST is, as I have to have one on Thursday.. Will I be ok to drive myself.I'm not sure I think it was Short --- TestIf the test you are having performed is the Short Synacthen Test the following are listed as potential side effects....."Nausea,anxious sweating, dizziness, itchy skin, redness and or swelling of injection site, palpitations (a fast or fluttering heart beat) and facial flushing (may also include arms and torso),but should disappear within a few hours...Although uncommon, some people report feeling better or sense of well being after the test."If this is the test you are having, and you should check with your doctor to make sure, then driving afterward might not be advised.Check the Wikipedia link it will tell you preparation necessary before taking the test such as fasting at least eight hours before testing, not being on any steroid meds, adrenal extract supplements,DHEA etc...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACTH_stimulation_testhttp://www.royalfree.nhs.uk/pdf/short%20synacthen.pdfI have no personal experience of this test so hopefully someone that has had the synacthen test performed will jump in with more info.Contact your doctor to confirm the test you are having performed and find out any necessary preparation required.Hope this helps..~Andy~
Guest guest
SST = Short Synacthen Test This test is done to see whether you are suffering with adrenal insufficiency ('s Disease) to check the level of cortisol your adrenals are secreting. If very low or nil, they will give you a diagnosis of 's. If the cortisol secretion level is very high, this is called 'Cushing's Syndrome' but unfortunately, if it is found you are suffering from neither, you will be told your SST is normal and therefore there is nothing wrong with your adrenals. Problem is, doctors appear to forget that to reach 's or Cushing's, there are various steps leading to either, but they ignore these steps. This is called adrenal fatigue or low adrenal reserve. What happens is that they do the test as early in the morning as possible, so you will need to be at the hospital pretty early, probably 8.30a.m. They take a blood sample from you and then inject Synacthen into you. They wait half an hour and then take another blood sample to see whether that has increased/decreased the amount of cortisol secreted by your adrenals. Unless you are suffering with 's, it is said that the Synacthen injection would make a dead donkey kick, so don't be surprised if you find this test is a complete waste of time. The best test to get done is the 24 hour salivary adrenal salivary profile which tests your adrenal function at four specific times during the day and night. This can be tested via Genova Diagnostics. Luv - Sheila Could anyone please tell me what a SST is, as I have to have one on Thursday.. Will I be ok to drive myself. Guest guest
Thanks Sheila I had the saliva test a couple of weeks ago, you checked it for me and said nothing to worry about. I told My Endo last night, thinking I dont need the SST but he said he still wants to do this test. Thought I had misheard what the test is for. Like you say its probably a waste of time, but hes doing other bloods at the same time so best not grumble love Debbie
Guest guest
What is the reason for not allowing " web only " ? If Sheila wants to email us all to our email boxes that still gets through. Guest guest
The reason that we do not allow 'web only' is because choosing such an option would mean members don't get notified of the latest happenings or news, nor do they have access to the information that I do need to send you all occasionally. They can read messages only on the web. Luv - Sheila What is the reason for not allowing " web only " ? If Sheila wants to email us all to our email boxes that still gets through. Guest guest
I would add that through , it is possible to type one message and then it will send it to all members except those marked web only (no mail). It does not send out special notices to them. This is not so important to members who do read regularly but there are a lot who just come to the group as and when it is necessary or they want to. These are the people the messages would not get to if they were web only. Sure, it is possible to wade through every one of the over 2000 members to see who is web only (a task I have no time for let alone Sheila), and then send them the message individually, but what if there was a few hundred of them. It would be time consuming to search for them, but to send them the messages individually would be impossible. Even sending a dozen at a time. My email server will not allow me to send the same mail in bulk because it thinks it is spam. Lilian
