Guest guest
Hi Lynne, Yes you're right, if she has no thyroid hormones she will be cold, tired, forgetful and all the rest.... I don't think it's just a case of non conversion... she can't convert nothing into T3.. may be a case of non absorption? Does she have enough stomach acid to absorb the tablets? Might it be worth tring betaine HCL? She's not taking lots of antacids is she? Might also be worth trying liquid thyroxine as this is sometimes more readily absorbed. Is your mum taking the thyroxine on it's own, without food? Recent studies have shown it's best taken last thing at night..... x > > My mum who takes levothyroxine at 200mcg daily has just been to see her gp who told her that there is no thyroid hormone showing at all in her recent blood tests and asked if she was sure she had been taking it. >
Guest guest
Well Lynne, we really know to know exactly what your Mum's TFT's showed. What were the actual numbers and what was the reference range for each of the tests done? Your Mum should be able to get these over the telephone. Your Mum is obviously still suffering with both the symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism, but there is no way any GP can tell whether the thyroid hormone is being absorbed at cellular level unless he has the results of her free T3. Can your Mum ask her GP to write a blood form out asking for ONLY TSH and free T3 (this is what they test if a doctor suspects hyperthyroidism). That way, she could get the fT3 tested, which they won't do if she has T4 tested as well. If the doctor is open minded enough to prescribe natural thyroid extract, that could be the way to go, but first, he might want to try the synthetic route of adding some synthetic T3 to her T4, in which case, he would lower her thyroxine when adding in T3. Your Mum needs to feel well and it may be that her doctor is reluctant to give her a trial of anything else, in which case, you might need to consider whether or not she might be better having a trial of NDT herself and following the information in our document 'How to Use Natural Thyroid Extract' in the Files section. You could ask the GP to test her ferritin, B12, D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc, because if any of these are low in the range, she will be unable to utilise the thyroid hormone at cellular level until they have been supplemented. She may be suffering with low adrenal reserve, so you might consider getting the 24 hour salivary profile done to see if this is the case. If she is suffering with this, once again, thyroid hormone can't be utilised by the cells. Luv - Sheila Sorry it has been a while since I posted, the temporal arteritis flaring not the thyroid. My mum who takes levothyroxine at 200mcg daily has just been to see her gp who told her that there is no thyroid hormone showing at all in her recent blood tests and asked if she was sure she had been taking it. I know for a fact she takes it, first thing every morning before she gets out of bed. He has suggested putting the dose up to 250 a day. I feel that this is a classic sign that it is not converting to T3. I have told her to ask for Erfa or Armour so we are now waiting to hear from her doctor……she is constantly cold, fatigued and for someone who had a very sharp memory is now very forgetful. She puts it down to her age, she is 78, but I don't think it is that as much as the lack of thyroid hormones in her system. Am I correct in thjinking along those lines? Guest guest
Hi there, not sure what you mean about the blood test. but it could mean that it is below the reference interval. the pains in the kneescould be some thing else like RA rhumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. I have RA and hashimoto`s autoimmune ear disease anddermatitis. so you see it may not be all the thyroid gland. then again she may have adrenal problems. Angel.
