Guest guest
I have a hard time with remembering to take the NDT more than in the morning. I have started to set an alarm but as I was off work today all my timings were off as I slept later and had my meals later..then by the time I remembered I was due a second dose I had eaten. By the time I've waited the hour it will be to late anyway. It is my understanding that the NDT (or any thyroid meds) need to be taken 30 min before food or 1 hour after. What I would like to know....since I am crushing the tablets anyway ...if I put the powder under my tongue for a time...will it make a difference whether or not I have eaten...this would make it much easier for me.. Thanks
Guest guest
If you are swallowing the tablets, then you really should not eat within an hour of taking the thyroid extract because the T4 gets partially absorbed through the gut. If you are taking the Erfa 'Thyroid' then this brand can be taken sublingually and will be absorbed direct into the blood stream bypassing the stomach. None of the other brands are designed to be taken sublingually. If you are taking Armour Thyroid that should be chomped up in your mouth before swallowing as this helps it absorb better. It is best if you take your NDT at the same times during the day, but it really doesn't matter if you forget to take a dose at the right time and you have to take it later, so long as you take the full dose during the day. Some people take all their dose at once and feel fine. This you would have to experiment with to see whether this would work for you. Always remember though that the T3 in NDT has a short half life and it peaks in the blood a couple or so hours after taking it, and the effect of T3 starts to leave your system after about 6 hours or so. This is the reason we recommend splitting the dose. Luv - Sheila I have a hard time with remembering to take the NDT more than in the morning.
