Guest guest
Bless your heart honey. How well do you eat? As in, do you try to find the best nutrition for your body? You might look into juicing. If you do a combination of fruits and vegetables, they would cleanse and build up your cells and maybe help your body heal itself. We have an amazing immune system even if it doesn't act right all the time. We unfortunately abuse it quite a bit without realizing that all the processed foods we eat are really what can make us sick. Just an idea. I know for myself just a plan of action helps. Where are you from the UK exactly from ? I love the south of England (oh, Sissinghurst garden, my love). And no Briton yet could understand my love for Isle of Wight. Hello Lin, Welcome to our wonderful group. How lucky for you to go to Grasse! When I was there, I was with someone with severe allergies, so I had to skip all the lovely perfume culture that was beckoning to me. Like turning a kid loose in a candy store and telling them not to smell or taste anything. : ( I do hope to get back one day! Although it's months away, we'll be awaiting your fragrant travelogue following your trip! Cheers! Andrine

Guest guest
Hi Thanks for allowing me to join. I am 58 years old and have been on thyroxine 150 alternating with 125 for some years. It has not been perfect, in fact during this time I have been diagnosed with ADHD, a diagnosis I sought due to my deteriorating organisational skills and memory. I have used Ritalin but am not using it now. I have had a very stressful two or three years, breaking both legs and being denied morphine for eight hours after an operation on one of them, due to NHS incompetence. Family troubles and a fighting a government campaign against home educators which threatened to remove our human rights. I home educate my 13 year old daughter which makes my present level of functioning extremely distressing. I have recently been feeling even worse than before my hypothyroid diagnosis, falling asleep for hours in the day despite 9 hours sleep. I am very low and fed up as I have been struggling to maintain a minimum of health and energy for so long and feel like giving up but that just isn't possible. My eyebrows are missing their outer hair again, i have put on a stone in 5 months and I have developed asthma which makes exercise very difficult. I have had blood taken for a number of things by my doctor but the results are all " normal " . Here are some of the results. Ft4 24 (9-25) TSH 0.10 (0.30-6.5) Ft3 4.6 (3.5-6.5) Ferritin 97 (10-420) plasma c reactive protein <5 (-10 u) If it is any use I can post urea and electrolytes and liver function. He is referring me to a endocrinologist, a Dr H in Leicestershire, but I have no idea when I will get an appointment. I would be very grateful for any help as I am virtually non functional at the moment. Thanks Maire
Guest guest
Hello Maire and welcome to our forum where I hope you will get all the help and support you so obviously need. First, congratulations on becoming a home educator and I hope this brings your family great success. One of our members went down this road and self educated her son here in the UK and her son last year was accepted at Princeton University in the US - so keep up the good work. Many of the 2100 odd members here have joined because they were/are unhappy with the way they have been treated (or not) by the NHS and many are unable to regain their normal health on levothyroxine (T4) only medication. This is because thyroxine is a mainly inactive thyroid hormone (pro-hormone) that has to convert through the liver, kidneys, brain and other thyroid hormone receptors throughout the body into the ACTIVE thyroid hormone T3. It is T3 every cell in our body and brain needs to make them function and not T4. The only way that many patients can get through to their doctors is by writing a letter and either delivering it by hand or posting it to their GP sending a copy of that letter to the Head of Practice. Make absolutely certain that you are making it clear to your doctor that you are no longer prepared to put up with the symptoms you are suffering and that you will now do everything within your power to get to the bottom of what is causing these and then get on the correct treatment that will help you get well again. Start off by listing every single symptom and sign. Leave nothing out, however long the list grows. You can check these against those in our web site under 'Hypothyroidism' in the Menu www.tpa-uk.org.uk . Next, take your basal temperature for 4/5 mornings before you get out of bed and list these if they are below 97.8 - as a temperature lower than that indicates that you are still suffering with low metabolism and your medication either needs titrating or needs to be changed to something else. Next, list the blood tests you need done and ask for the results to be either sent to you or left in reception so that you can pick them up, and that you also need the reference range for each test done. First, start with the thyroid function tests. You need TSH, free T4 and free T3. Your very high free T4 result and low free T3 suggests very strongly that your T4 is NOT converting to the active T3 and this could be the cause of all your problems. Next, you need your levels of certain minerals and vitamins tested because if any of the following are low in the reference range, your thyroid hormone cannot be fully utilised at cellular level. I have listed alongside the tests you need references to show the doctor the connection between these levels and hypothyroidism: · Low iron/ferritin: http://www.thewayup.com/newsletters/081504.htm and http://www.ithyroid.com/iron.htm and http://www.femail.com.au/iron-levels-tony-pearce.htm · Low vitamin B12: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18655403 · Low vitamin D3: http://www.eje-online.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/3/329 and http://www.goodhormonehealth.com/VitaminD.pdf · Low magnesium: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC292768/pdf/jcinvest00264-0105.pdf · Low folate: http://www.clinchem.org/cgi/content/full/47/9/1738 and http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/thy.1999.9.1163 · Low copper/zinc:http://www.istanbul.edu.tr/ffdbiyo/current4/07%20Iham%20AM%C4%B0R.pdf and http://articles.webraydian.com/article1648-Role_of_Zinc_and_Copper_in_Effective_Thyroid_Function.html Next, you could, at this stage in the letter, ask for a trial of either synthetic T3 (Liothyronine) to be added to your levothyroxine, or a trial of natural thyroid extract which contains all the thyroid hormones (T4. T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin, but if your GP refuses to even consider this, then ask for a referral to an endocrinologist of your choice as most endocrinologists have their specialty in diabetes and know little about the symptoms of hypothyroidism. I have sent you a list of doctors who treat using combination thyroid hormone therapy, so choose one of those and give your GP the name and hospital address where the consultant works. You do NOT have to see the endocrinologist your GP chooses. Ask your GP to work with you by reading the attached document (print this off and send to him with your letter of requests) and by going through a process of elimination, to help you to find the cause of your continuing ill health. Send a copy to the Head of Practice. I have recently been feeling even worse than before my hypothyroid diagnosis, falling asleep for hours in the day despite 9 hours sleep. I am very low and fed up as I have been struggling to maintain a minimum of health and energy for so long and feel like giving up but that just isn't possible. Guest guest
Hello Maire - many (the majority I guess) of us are all too familiar with the symptoms you have developed and with the very low basal temperature this would point to low adrenal fatigue. You should do the Adrenal Questionnaire (also you might as well do the Candida and Magnesium questionnaire also) that you will find in the FILES section of this forum's Home Page. Look in the Menu http://health.groups//group.thyroid treatment .. In the Page that opens, scroll down the list of FOLDERS until you find one entitled 'Medical Questionnaires' and let us know exactly how you score. Your answers will give you an indication of whether you should be properly tested through Genova Diagnostics to see exactly where your cortisol and DHEA levels lie at four specific times during the day. Low adrenal reserve is very much overlooked by NHS doctors who ONLY believe in treating 's Disease (too little or no cortisol secretion) or Cushing's Syndrome (too high a level of cortisol secretion) and they refuse to acknowledge any steps leading up to either of these conditions - so take it on board now, that if you do show as suffering with adrenal fatigue, this will be something you are going to have to take on board yourself, but it is not an onerous task. Check out Dr Rind's Metabolic Chart and Temperature Graph - this will be of enormous help http://www.drrind.com/therapies/metabolic-temperature-graph .. Also read what Dr Peatfield writes about low adrenal reserve/thyroid association so you fully understand the connection http://www.tpa-uk.org.uk/thyroid_adrenal_dysfunction.pdf Sorry, reread your message and saw you are waiting for the results of your 24 hour saliva test for your adrenals, so disregard most of what is written above. Let us know the results when you get them. I guess it is your GP that needs the lobotomy - not you. Doesn't he know that T3 is the active thyroid hormone and not T4? Also, just because your GP has referred you to an endocrinologist, don't believe that s/he is an 'expert' because we have found the majority know little to nothing about thyroid disease as their speciality more often than not is in diabetes. By the time you get your appointment, you are quite likely to know a lot more about your thyroid condition than s/he does. Luv - Sheila My temperature this morning was 35.7 which is 96.26, the lowest yet, it is usually low which is strange as I often feel very hot and have to throw my covers off or remove some clothes. I am going to see Dr P on Sunday as I expect the referral to the endochronologist to take months if other referrals are representative. It is all a lot to take in, I will make an appointment to ask for the blood tests below when I have seen him. I will send the list and the to my gp before I go and to the Head of Practice. I have done a saliva test which was picked up yesterday so probably won't have the results by Sunday unfortunately.
