Do you have a reason for the hypothyroidism - like hashimotos? Are you supplimenting with Vitamin C and selenium which is vital for conversion of T4 to t3? . > > Hi, Im totally confused what I should be doing next! Guest guest
Hi Mel Obviously you have a GP who is prescribing synthetic levothyroxine for you. What you need to do is to write a letter to him setting out the following. First, tell him that you are still suffering badly on 100mcgs levothyroxine only and that you need to have your medication titrated or help in finding the underlying cause that is causing your symptoms etc. Write down a list of the symptoms you are still suffering and the signs you are showing. Check these against those in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk under 'Hypothyroidism' and then in the drop down menu 'Symptoms and Signs' Next, take your temperature for 4 or 5 mornings before you get out of bed and write these down also. Normal temperature is 98.6. If y ours is 97.8 (or it could be much less), this is an indication your metabolism is not yet functioning optimally and you need to find out why. Next, list the blood tests you would like i.e. TSH, free T4 and free T3, as TSH is not enough to tell the true story of what is going on. You need to know whether the mainly INACTIVE thyroid hormone T4 is actually converting to the ACTIVE thyroid hormone T3. It is T3 your body needs and not T4. Ask also for your levels of ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc to be tested and before the GP asks why you want these, tell him that if any of these are low in the reference range, no amount of thyroid hormone replacement is able to be properly utilised at cellular level - where it matters, until whatever you are low in is supplemented. Next, because you are getting no better, ask your GP for a referral to an endocrinologist of your choice. I will send you a list of doctors recommended by some of our members who will prescribe using either the addition of synthetic T3 to your T4, T3 alone, or natural thyroid extract. Most NHS endocrinologists have diabetes as their specialty and know little about thyroid disease. You will see that some of the doctors on the list are NHS and others are private - but these private one's may do NHS work. You will have to telephone their secretary to find out. Next, ask for your letter of requests to be placed into your medical notes and send a copy to the Head of Practice to ensure your GP does not lose it " accidentally " - it has been known - and keep a copy of the letter yourself in case you need to refer to it at a later date - should your GP do nothing. Can you just tell me whether you are taking 200mcgs Selenium and 15mgs Zinc which are essential to helping with the conversion of T4 to T3. You also need at least 1000mgs vitamin C daily. Good luck - and I hope this starts you off on the road to recovery. Luv - Sheila Hi, Im totally confused what I should be doing next! Has anyone tried nutri thyroid, or thyro complex as posted by Dr Peatfield? I really dont know what Im deficient in, or what my body actually needs in order to feel well again...all the different recommendations are just confusing me more! Am on levothyroxine 100mg and still taking sertraline 100mg..I tried to come off the sertraline by cutting down to 75mg a day, but this caused a sudden drop in my mood and had to return to original dose. Im struggling to find work, I have a son also who deserves a mum that can provide for him, I cant afford expensive treatments, potions etc and am feeling so fed up and hopeless, I just need to know what to do next...its affecting my whole life and I feel like Ill never be well again. Please help.
