Guest guest
I do not know what you have to send away, but when I had to do a 24 hour one which was sent away to Holland (I think), I just did it in a clean bucket and covered the bucket with a clean bit of cloth in between. Then after the 24 hours, I had a small tube which was given to me to fill from the bucket. I didn't have to send a whole bucket full I am relieved to say LilianI need to do a 24 hr urine test. Does anyone know where i could get a collection bottle from? Do any major chemists sell them?
Guest guest
Hi there - I am a renal patient as well as thyroid so this is something I have to do quite frequently. Phone the lab of your local hospital - say you are having to do a 24 hour urine sample (I normally say for a large London hospital which is true but go to my local hospital) and if you phone the lab up they will tell you where to go to find them and they will give you a large container. Ask for two as I do and then you have one for another time - but then again you may not need to do this again but I do unfortunately and at work..................... best wishes Mandy

Guest guest
hmm i cannot take a bucket to work :-) perhaps i can time it so i can take work out the equation. mind you i'm not going to stay in for 24 hours, that would drive me mad. that made me laugh regarding not having to send the full bucket,it's the way you said it - thank you! > I had a small tube which was given to me to fill from the > bucket. Guest guest
Hi that is not a bad idea, if worst comes to worst i might have to do that :-) thanks! chris > > Hi > > How about washing out an empty milk container and sterilising it with Milton, which is what they use for babies bottles? > > >
Guest guest
Hi all, It must be undertaken in a sterile bottle from the hospital otherwise contamination could take place from the container you are using. Same with an ordinary wee sample - has to be from the doctors - not something used from home or it will pick up bugs and give an incorrect reading. best wishes Mandy
Guest guest
i got a reply from the lab this morning, and they said an empty mineral water bottle will be ok? i will try to get a proper container from local hospital though chris > > Hi all, > > It must be undertaken in a sterile bottle from the hospital otherwise > contamination could take place from the container you are using. Hi The lab will send you containers to collect the urine in. They are usually large enough to collect 24 hours worth, but if not, just use an empty 1 1/2 or 2 litre mineral water bottle in addition. Good luck,
Guest guest
Thanks the lab has sent me the small bottle (250ml) - the idea being you use a bigger bottle for 24 hrs, then fill up the smaller bottle and send that off. You write down how much urine you produced in a day, then write that down and they work it out on a pro rata basis. they -laboratory - said it's ok to use a mineral water bottle but the problem with that is, a) it's not sterile, how am i going to know how much urine i produced in 24 hours? it is going to be a bit of a performance trying to measure it all from a mineral water bottle isn't it? i will try to get a proper collection bottle from a hospital or pharmacy. thanks
Guest guest
Hi Don't know about other labs, but Genova sends you sufficient containers for the tests. You did not say which test you are doing, but if it's a thyroid one, then it is important to mix the total urine well together in the end before taking a small sample to send back to them for analysis; else the results would be skewed if you just took a sample from one of the urine bottles. I don't think the not being sterile matters when checking thyroid levels, but contamination (with milk bottles for instance) might matter... but again, I don't know which test you are doing. If you wanted to sterilize a plastic container, just microwave it (if it fits in). The average volume of urine produced over 24 hours would be 2 litres (2000 ml) or less. The containers that Genova provides are graded in ml. You will be asked to not drink excessively on the day of the test, so 2 litre containers should normally suffice. If you wee considerably more than 2 litres per 24 hours (without drinking excessively), you may have a problem anyway ... diabetes insipidus would come to mind or diabetes mellitus. Best wishes,
Guest guest
it's not with genova...it's with a foreign lab... there are lots of different things they test including thyroid, Testosterone, growth hormone etc. i think i'ts only hormones they test in these tests.... chris
