Guest guest
Hi Sheila, Was just reading one of your replies about metabolism and unable to burn off the extra calories so gain weight when hypo ect... I think i remember reading this to be true for around 90% of hypo patients, but i was just wondering if you had any documents to hand ect that i could read about the other 10% (that would include me) That dont gain weight ot even loose weight. I've always had a really fast metabolism, would eat 5-6 meals a day and stay the same thiness before i was ill, now while im ill my digestion is no were near good enough to digest 5-6 meals a day, but yet even tho my metabolism/digestion has slowed down i am still unable to gain weight no matter what i eat. I guess im just trying to work out whats going on with me, as im not the typical hypo patient, infact far from
Guest guest
Hi Not everybody gains weight when they are hypothyroid but the majority do. A minority with hypothyroidism don't gain weight at all. The difference appears to arise from their individual biochemistry, the quality of the calories they consume, and how they use those calories. Have you suffered weight loss, or is it just that you are unable to gain any weight at all and just stay the same. How much thyroid hormone replacement are you taking and do you have any recent thyroid function test results. I say this because taking too much thyroid medication can result in the thyroid become too active, thus causing weight loss. Other causes of weight loss of course are type 2 diabetes - or even a tapeworm (Ouch!). However, what are other members of your family like, do they too have a similar problem and find that they too cannot put on weight. Do you, in fact, have other members of your family who have a thyroid or autoimmune disease. You may never find the answer. Do you actually WANT to put on more weight? Guest guest
Hiya again Sheila I lost around a stone when i first became ill, but for the last 2 years i have stayed the exact same weight 9 stone 8. No matter what i eat/drink it just doesnt budge (i probably need to eat 5-6 meals a day to gain weight, thyroid related or something totally different?) I am on 125mg of T3, only just recently raised to this much, i know that being hypo can result in weight loss, so im keeping a close eye on my temps/pulse ect my temps are avg around 36.6 and my pulse around 90. I have been tested for diabetes quite a few times, all came back negative but i show many of the symptoms (thirst, frequent urination, yeast problems, unable to gain weight), even checked my BG on a monitor at home. Regarding my family, im pretty much the opposite of them. They all gain weight quite easily. Its a strange one indeed. Ideally i would like to gain weight yes, but re-gaining my health is number 1 priority, being able to eat 5-6 meals a day is just a bonus > > Hi > > Not everybody gains weight when they are hypothyroid but the majority do. Guest guest
I thought that, although it is usual with hypothyroidism to gain weight, if you have adrenal insufficiency in addition to an under-active thyroid you are likely to lose weight – so maybe that is something which could be worth checking out.
