T3 has a half life in humans of 2 days Miriam, not " a few

days " . It's effect peaks in the blood between 2 to 4 hours and some feel

the 'feel good' effect leaving after 6 to 8 hours - this is why we recommend

splitting T3 dosage twice (or even more) daily.

If you are having a thyroid function test, we recommend that you

don't take any thyroid hormone replacement on the morning you have your blood

drawn and take it with you to take straight afterwards. You can take the T3 in

the usual way the day before your test.

If it takes 6 weeks for T4-containing

medication to clear from the system, but only a few days for T3-containing

medication, does that mean you could take T3 up until a few days before a blood

test and whilst waiting for the T4 to clear? I vaguely remember Lilian saying

something about how she found T3 took much longer to clear than it is reputed

to.

Thanks, Sheila. I don't want to know the half life (ie half of it is left), but

the full life (when it is all gone). I want to have a baseline test with no

medication in the system at all.

Miriam,

Well if you start off with T3 being 100%, after 2 days you'll have 50%.

plus 2 more days 25% left

plus 2 more days 12.5% left

plus 2 more days 6.25% left

plus 2 days 3.12% left....

so that means that after 10 days there will be 3.12% of the original dose of T3

left in your body......

Depends really on the size of the inital dose...... 3% of 20 mcg isn't much

but 3% of 60 mcg is getting on for 2 mcg....

Thanks. I didn't realise it kept on halving like that. In theory that means it

never leaves the system as there is always half of what there was the day

before.

You keep halving it and halving it and halving what's left until

there is nothing left Miriam.

Hi -please correct me if I am wrong but isn't the half life of T3 6-8

hours so the amount will have halved 3 or four times during the first day ?

About 1/8 or less left after the first day and hardly anything after the second

1/64 or less . Best wishes

Hi , the half life of T3 is actually 2 days in humans. It is

the EFFECT of T3 in the system that only lasts around 6 to 8 hours and after

that, the 'good' effect starts to fade and this is why we recommend people take

T3 in split doses, i.e. first thing in a morning, say around 8.00ap.m. and

again in the afternoon around 2/3.00p.m. to keep your body 'topper up'.
