Guest guest
Hi Your levels of iron are high. Normally once iron is taken into the body, it does not get removed. There is no mechanism in the body which could break down iron, it is stored in the blood (ferritin). High levels of iron can be poisonous, and normally you would be prescribed with drugs which bind to iron and remove them through urine. What has your doctor/pathologist told you about this. I would avoid iron rich foods for some time. Usually, most people complain about low iron levels - not high. Here are some possible causes of high iron levels in blood: 1) sideroblastic anaemia 2) excessive alcohol intake 3) liver problems (due to excessive alcohol) 4) hereditary (genetic disorders) 5) as I mentioned dietary intake (too much iron in food) You also need to ask your GP to test your level of ferritin. THIS IS IMPORTANT as you might be suffering with Haemachromatosis, which is otherwise known as IRON OVERLOAD, your liver enzymes may be OK, but you can still have this hereditary illness. Haemachromatosis cannot be treated with drugs, you usually need to have a pint of blood withdrawn from your arm on a regular basis until your ferritin levels come down. If you do suffer with this inherited disease, your family will need to be tested too. You may find your parents are the carriers of this, or are suffering with it themselves too. But you must ask your Dr to test you, as it is not a routine blood test Luv - Sheila From: thyroid treatment [mailto:thyroid treatment ] On Behalf Of stehendie Sent: 04 March 2011 15:29 thyroid treatment Subject: My latest Iron Labs Hi Sheila and co Bit of info on what is happening at the minute with me, i seemed to hit a brick wall with my T3 raises after 75, i got up to 125mg but i hardly felt any better from my T3 increases over 75mg, so i cut back down to 75 and decided to get my electrolytes tested along with my iron to check things hadn't dropped too low. My temps were stable i was also on 50mg of HC and 0.1mg of Florinef. These are my latest iron labs, i have not touched iron in 3 months. Serum Iron = 43 (11-28) Saturation = 74.8% (23-53) Transferrin = 2.3 (2-3.6) The doctor didn't do a ferritin, but with these labs they are all coming back really high, is this dangerous at all, also is it good to assume that my ferritin level will be good/acceptale for the amount of T3 considering my iron levels seem high ? Today i raised my florinef, and my temps raised to the highest ive ever seen them so maybe that was all i was lacking to get my temps up and my symptoms cleared fingers crossed Thanks Steve
Guest guest
Hi Sheila thanks for the reply, i probably should of said that about 6 months ago i had a ferritin level of 7 and all the other iron tests came back " low " .. So i guess i just over supplmented, i did supplement iron quite alot in the hope to raise my ferritin. I have my next telephone consult with Dr P on wednesday i will see what he suggests, possibly giving blood would be the best option. > > Hi > > Your levels of iron are high.
