First Carole, I wouldn't worry about offending this woman who

dares to call herself a doctor. I would tell her in no uncertain terms that if

she doesn't understand how the greater thyroid system works, she should refer

her patients on to an endocrinologist. She has absolutely NO RIGHT to titrate

your dose downwards to practically NIL because your TSH is suppressed. Doesn't

she know that TSH will almost ALWAYS be suppressed in patients taking thyroid

hormone replacement. Did she not test y our free T4 and free T3? Did she not

take any account of your remaining symptoms and signs?

To cut down your 50mcgs T4 because you still felt ill, and then reduce

it by half because your TSH was still suppressed at 0.3 is actually NOT the way

to go. I would tell the doctor that those with symptoms of hypothyroidism which

are caused because they have antibodies to their thyroid (Hashimoto's

Thyroiditis), should not even be on the mainly inactive thyroid hormone

T4. You need to be prescribed the ACTIVE thyroid hormone T3.

Think of 'hypothyroidism' as 'Type 1' and 'Type 2' Hypothyroidism. 'Type

1' is

defined as primary, secondary or tertiary. Primary hypothyroidism, means

the thyroid gland doesn't produce an adequate amount of thyroxine (T4). Secondary

hypothyroidism develops when the pituitary gland does not release enough of

the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) that prompts the thyroid to secrete more

of the thyroid hormones T4 and T3.Tertiary hypothyroidism results from a

malfunction of the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls the

endocrine system. In the majority of cases, 'Type 1' Hypothyroidism may

be corrected by using levothyroxine (T4-only) replacement.

Type 2 hypothyroidism is defined as deficiencies in the peripheral conversion of T4 to

T3, the subsequent reception of T3, and the use of T3 at the cellular level.

'Type 2' reduces the amount of the active thyroid hormone T3 in the

body, producing the same sort of symptoms that 'Type 1' does.

Environmental toxins may also cause or exacerbate the problem. The

pervasiveness of 'Type 2' hypothyroidism has yet to be recognised by

mainstream medicine, but already is in epidemic proportions. 'Type 2

hypothyroidism' can be corrected by the active T3 hormone replacement

therapy - and not by T4-only therapy. The BTA and RCP appear to fail to

even recognise 'Type 2' (or more correctly called Euthyroid

Hypometabolism).

You have 'Type 2' hypothyroidism as your symptoms are NOT

caused by Primary, Secondary or Tertiary hypothyroidism. Anybody who has

Hashimoto's thyroiditis as the cause of their symptoms of hypothyroidism should

also go on a gluten free diet as the thyroid antibodies thrive on gluten. Did

your GP tell you this?

Tell

her that you wish to be referred to an endocrinologist and preferably one of

your choice. You can choose anybody outside of your area and you need to be

seen by one who does prescribe both synthetic T4 and T3, or natural thyroid

extract.

Your

free T3 is OUTSIDE THE BOTTOM OF THE REFERENCE RANGE. Your body and

brain CANNOT function without T3. This doctor is causing you harm. Your free T4

should be in the upper third of the reference range when taking thyroid hormone

replacement, and clearly, your results show you are in the lower third of the

range.

Don't

allow this idiot to mess any more with your health. In fact, I would refuse to

go back to see this plonker and insist you be seen by a doctor who actually

know what s/he is doing.

recap. diagnosed 2007 hashi. After settling down on levothyroxine, with normal

range T4 on 50mcg thyroxine tsh 0.1 still felt ill, told Im slightly hyper so

dropped to 25mcg, still same, 0.1 so dropped again to 12.5mcg and this time tsh

went to 0.03 which says Im more hyper according to figures (I think?)

Dr who read this last test is not usual one, but said its normal and stay here.

Having learned from the group, I wasnt happy so then got a genova test done.

results from genova urine test are back and will need to take this up with my

usual GP on 13th, but what do I say that wilI enlist support and not offend her

needlessly? What other info should I take with me and what exactly am I asking

her for based on this?

results are...

Ft3 is 454 (592-1850)

Ft4 is 970 (347-1994)

T3:T4 ratio 0.5 L (0.50-2.00)

Thanks.

Carole
