Gleevec Side Effects

It is imparative to take Gleevec on a full stomach and drink plenty of water.

Too often we (including myself at one time) take our meds and disregard the

instructions. You can take Gleevec on a full stomach but what works for me is to

take it in the evenings after my last meal of the night. This way, I follow

directions and if I become nauseated (which I have not in several years) I can

drink water and ly down which potentially gets me to fall asleep. Water is the

key to combat side affects for it cleanses your system and the Gleevec that's

needed has most likely been absorbed already.

Please, follow the directions and modify only when necessary.

Hi '

Sorry you are not feeling well. I have the same deal with eating. Gleevec can

give you kind of low level nausea etc that makes eating not too attractive. May

I suggest what I do? Include a high protein milkshake with your daily intake.

Can get a cheap blender, some protein powder from a health food store and then

add milk, ice cream, crushed ice, friut - whatever tastes good to you. Again try

to add at least 20g of protein via the powder. Can make this taste really good

and cost per serving is just pennies. Might take a multi viatmin daily also.

Personally I have my biggest meal at night and preceed this with a glass of red

wine. Tastes good and stimulates the appetite. See your doctor about some

diurectics to minimixe the eye puffiness. Will help, but unfortunately, probably

not make it go away altogether.

Good Luck

the drug. My eyes stay extremely swollen all day long. I also CANNOT eat. I

weight 95lbs and I have to make myself eat. I was wondering if anyone else is

experiencing these side effects and if they go away over time? Any responses

Hi ,

I have had the same problems with Gleevec.

I would suggest that you ask your Dr. about Sandostatin.

It is made by the same people who make Gleevec and comes in 2 types,

long lasting and daily. Both have to be injected, the long lasting by

a Dr. or nurse and the daily you can do your self.

This worked extremely well for me, I was to stop taking the Gleevec

and let nature take its course because I had no quality of life and so

didn't think that quantity was a good trade off.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Terry

I think I have every known GI problem related to Gleevec. I have been

hospitalized numerous times for dehydration associated with the side effects of

Gleevec and severe Gastritis. The answer is yes. For me, I have also had/have

nausea, vomiting. ongoing diarrhea, upset stomach, loose stools. I also

have an incredible gurgley stomach about 30-4 minutes after taking my Gleevec.

Due to these side effects as well as the intense muscle and bone aches I get

after taking it, I take my Gleevec with a evening snack before bed so that I

can sleep through the worse of the effects. You have to play around with it

and see what works best for you.

Hope that helps in some way- :)

Try some immodium (non-prescription) or if that doesn't work, Lomotil

(prescription) I use the Lomotil and it seems to help.

It's very important to get good work-up as I sufferered with nausua, stomach

cramps, vomiting, etc. for the first 5 months I was on Gleevec. My Onc and PCP

thought it was side effects however when I spiked 101 fever, found out it was

diverticulitis. After being hospitalized with strong antibiotic tune-up I feel

better than I ever have. The lesson is that sometimes its too convenient to

blame side effects when there's something else going on not related to Gleevec

or CML.

That's a very good point Margaret. We often just assume that what we

are experiencing is a side effect, when in fact it can be something

completely unrelated. I think doctors have a tendency to dismiss

many of our complaints thinking the same thing which is unfortunate.

Take care,

I spoke to my doctor this morning. She told me to get anything that has the

ingredient, simetidin. She recommended gaviscon or mylanta gas.

Has anyone used those?

I've never heard of simetidin but I have heard of simethicone being

helpful for gas.

There's a product called " Gas X " that is made just for flatulence and

it has simethicone in it. I've tried it a few times and found it to be

helpful.

I had experienced same problem of severe Gastritis due to Gleevec and same side

effects. I noticed if I take my 400 mg with big meal I don't feel the same

symptoms. I try now to walk after I take the medicine, which gave me some

relief.

I hope that help

I had so many problems similar to those described, my Onc finally took me off

Gleevec and I'm on Sprycell (100 mg/day) with much fewer side effects.

HI,

I have had virtually zero side effects! Gleevec has

been great. I am thankful for the arrival of AMN and

Sprycel, but the only time you should switch to them

is if the side effects are overwhelming or you lose

your response.

Switching too soon may shorten your overall response

window. That is not a medical opinion - just my own.

Sorry to here about your sister in law but thankfully she has you.  I wish she

had a computer as this website and others like it are so helpful.

I have been on Gleevec for 2 1/2 years.  I suffer terrible side effects but

like you SIL, I too have responded really well on it.  I also have peeling skin

and easy torn skin.  I also have severe edema and swishing in my ear from the

fluid build up.  Hopefully on the lessor dose she will have lesser side

effects.    What dose is she on currently?  I wish her all the best and I'd

love to talk if she'd like.

[ ] Gleevec side effects

My sister-in-law is taking Gleevec for CML (diagnosed 1 year ago). It

has been very effective for her, in fact they cut her dosage in half

and her condition remains controlled. Side effects are very troublesome

lately: face peeling and peri-orbital swelling. lives in Fargo

North Dakota and is hoping to find others who suffer from CML for

support. She can also get to Minneapolis area if need be. Any

ideas/suggestions will be much appreciated. She does not have access to

a computer, thus my involvement.

THanks
