Hello all, have read on this site how lots of people with tinnitus have taken a

magnesium supplement which has helped reduces the ringing etc. Having recently

started getting tinnitus I bought magnesium and started taking them, believing

they would help, however, about 3 weeks in to taking the supplements I realised

I was feeling really tired, anxious, and not having any real relief from the

tinnitus,so I decided to check on the interactions between my 125mcu of

thyroxine and the 300mgs of magnesium only to find that much of the research

(from worthy information sites) that in actual fact magnesium reduces the

efficacy of thyroxine by interfering with its uptake in to the system. I stopped

the magnesium straight away and it is taking me a long hard slog to get back to

anywhere near how I felt before. Don't know what to do now because I really want

some relief from this tinnitus. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks

Dear Nicky, thanks so much for coming back and letting us have

this information Can you tell us what sort of Magnesium you were taking. Also,

have you had your ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper

and zinc levels tested. B12 deficiency can cause tinnitus symptoms. My husband

had this and I got him to try 100mcgs Vitamin B12 daily. This helped a lot, and

when he stopped, the ringing in the ears returned. He took the B12 again, and

again it stopped, and now the tinnitus has gone away completely.

Luv - Sheila

Dear Sheila,

thanks for the reply and the advice about B12, will get some today when in town,

and give it a go. The Magnesium I bought was from Holland and Barrett and they

were 100mg tabs of which I took 3 a day, they were stand alone magnesium...no

added b vits or anything, but once I stopped taking them I disposed of the

remainder so can't actually recall any more about them... now as for getting my

ferritin and other vit levels done....I recently moved house and had to change

gps, I was glad at the time because the gp group I had been with all my life

seemed to be totally disinterested in their jobs, thought new practice would be

an improvement....life is full of disappointments, no different there either!!

More interested in the computer screen than making eye contact. I despair of

gps, so I think I will get blood test done privately and present the results to

my gp if necessary. Already been back 3 times about the tinnitus and getting

nowhere fast. Hey ho...my invisibility has kicked in now I am 65!!!

Dear Sheila,

Thanks for reply, thought I had sent you a reply back but evidently my computer

skills are sadly lacking!! I will get some B12 today in town and give it a go.

As for having my ferritin levels checked...ha! If I could get my gps to even

take their eyes off the computer screen I would think I had been blessed! I

moved house recently and was so happy I had to change my gp, as the practice I

had been with all my life was getting to be less than efficient...anyway it

turns out that this new practice is about the same as the old one, I just

despair. Will get the bloods done privately and if necessary then take it to the

gp. It's true the older you get the more invisible you become...now...where am

I? Thanks for the help. Nicky

Try sending a letter to your new GP setting out the blood tests

you need and printing off the attached to show the reasons why you are

specifically requesting these vitamins and minerals should be tested to show

the research/medical evidence/ studies that show there is a big connection

between these low levels and hypothyroidism. The tests you need are ferritin, vitamin

B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc. Tell the doctor in your

letter that you would like access to the results when they are returned (you

don't have to give reasons why you need these and doctors are not allowed to

withhold the results) and remember also (this is vital….) to tell him

that you wish your letter of requested blood tests to be placed into your

medical notes. Send a copy to the Head f practice too.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on….and don't allow

yourself to become invisible. Make sure that your doctor KNOWS you are there,

and that the ONLY reason you are there is for them to do everything within

their power to give you back normal health again.

> Magnesium may interfere with thyroxine but only if it is taken at the same

time. If you take your magnesium at least 4 hours away from the thyroxine, you

shouldn't have any troubles. Also, if you are taking an iron supplement it is

important to take it at least 4 hours away from thyroxine.

> 300 mgs of magnesium may not be enough to battle the tinnitus. The basic dose

of magnesium is 400 mgs a day....and if this were not doing the trick, I would

not hesitate to go up to 600 mgs a day. How are your B12 levels? This can also

help very much with relief of tinnitus. Vitamin B12 level should be at the top

of the range....

Does this apply to Nutri Thyroid and magnesium being taken 4 hours apart, as

I've bought some magnesium from Nutri and it says to take 1 4 times, so don't

know when to take them.
