Hi Emma

So sorry to hear of all your problems - my heart goes out to you.

I suffered for years too with GP telling me I just needed iron tablets for 30 years, then the last 12 years levothyroxine 150mcg daily and I would be ok....as if!! (and I am nearly 60). I tried for years to tell them of all the usual problems, coldness, absolute exhaustion, sleeplessness, brain fog, no memory, etc.etc.etc. As I have severe arthritis everything was blamed on that and the drugs I take !! Talk about any excuse. I even managed to get to see an endo about 4 years ago who tested me and said I had diabetes insipidus and go back to Rheumatology Dept!

In the end I found this website. Got my GP to do all my bloods (those that he could anyway)..posted them on here and got some advice. I have now been self-medicating with NDT for the past few months and feel a whole lot better and I am sure in time there will be even more improvement. I think it costs me approx £6 per week for NDT including postage - well worth it and it saves me arguing with my GP who is so nice but so against NDT etc etc.

I am definitely not advocating you self-medicate - just saying that there is hope for you and there are plenty of people on this website that can give you advice and get you back to a happy life as so many of us have managed to do.Please just take advice from here and argue with your GP - we make it far too easy for them not to help us by not arguing enough sometimes!

Good luck and I hope you can find enough help to get you back to the way you want.

Kind regards

Hi Emma

I really do sympathise with you, I have been stuck on Thyroxine for 15 years

without any noticeable improvement. I have probably had a low thyroid for ever

as my temperature has always been low. When I used to go to Drs feeling ill and

exhausted it was " Of course you are tired, you have a baby and a toddler " . Then

it was " Of course you are tired you are working and have two young children " . If

I had bothered to mention it again it would have been " You are working full

time, or going through a divorce, or menopausal, or what do you expect at your

age? " etc etc.

Now I am really overweight and all the symptoms of hypothyroid are worse. My GP

(soon to be ex GP) refuses any other treatment than the 'wonderdrug thyroxine'.

I too had a 'lightbulb experience' when I found this forum and with all the help

and support we get here I am sure we can be on our way to better health.

Luv

Agreed, your GP is nuts, surgery if you are obese is life threatening procedure....and further they are likely to tell you to reduce your size beforehand anyhow!!!! how do you do that when your thyroid doesnt work. When you have had your surgery what difference will that make since your thyroid wont improve as a result; infact it is likely to put further stress on your thyroid during intubation during surgery.

I took several photo albums into my doc. I said this is what I was this is what I always was and this is what I should be now. I have not eaten more or exercised less but this is what has happened to me. Now if its not my thyroid I wont leave here until you tell me what it is and further I will insist you look at ever single picture in my albums. I took four albums with me!!!!!! He agreed it was my thyroid and I got prescriptions on the NHS for my trouble!!!!!

Take a male partner/friend with you, they often have a different attitude. Also get that person to go in with a pencil and paper and write things down; even if all they do is write their own advert to the lonely hearts club!!!!!! It is an effective ruse.

You need also to educate yourself and go armed with paper reference after papaer reference....just seeing your pile of references will scare your doc to death.....HOPEFULLY!!!!

Tell the doc he is putting you at risk of considerable health problems through surgery and through none treatment and further he should not compare himself to his patients. Tell him a lie that you have won medals for running marathons and if you could run you would go those 5miles every evening with him!!!!!! patronising g!t.

Your new GP is talking out of the wrong orifice!!

> The new GP has said she can refer me for help with the weight loss which she says once that has been dealt with all my problems would get better, She cant however refer me without a OK from the endocrinologist as they would send me back, she says she is happy to refer me for weight loss options and that would be surgery.

>I am now suffering from sleep obstructuve disorder and agony in all my joints.

I

am a 33 year old woman and feel like life is passing me by.

are you being treated for the sleep disorder? You will never lose weight unless

you get treated for this - gp should know that.
