Alternating thyroxine across the seasons

I have been alternating the level of thyroxine I take over the last year i.e.

more in winter less in summer, this was on my own initiative and I find that

there is at last some relief from the tiredness. It is not perfect, I still have

to guard my energy levels but I actually feel awake!

I would like to get this way of medicating accepted by my GP.

Can anyone direct me to any articles which indicate this need for more or less

thyroxine depending on the time of year, weather or temperature?

Thanks

Janet

I don't have a specific link or website to direct you to for that info and just

asking your Doc won't probably mean much to him.

This link talks about people needing more adrenal nurturing in the warm months

but not specifically about seasonal dosing. Personally, I wouldn't mention it

because it's just a chance to lower your med intake and not give you enough meds

to play with. That is why it is so wonderful that we can buy our meds online

without a script.

Perhaps someone has a good link they can give you...

Hi , I knew I had read about this somewhere and by chance I was flicking through

J Shomon's book 'Living Well with HYpothyroidism what your doctor does not

tell you ....'

Bottom of page 75 'Seasonal Variations in Thyroid Hormone Requirements'. One

little known issue for thyroid patients in terms of dosage of thyroid hormone is

the seasonal variationin thyroid function i.e. TSH naturally rises during colder

months and drops in the warmest momonths. Some drs adjust for this & prescribe

slightly increased doses during colder months. It goes on to say that the TSH

fluctuation can be more pronounced in cold climates and older people.

Okay so I have read this in a book and there are also a couple of references to

research. Can anyone advise on the best way to approach my GP? Do they take note

of research papers?

Thanks

Hi Janet

Take a copy of the

links to the research papers and what Shomon says and show them your GP.

Some will take note, others will not. I personally believe that you should

titrate your dose of thyroid hormone replacement according to how your feel and

the symptoms you might be presenting with.
