Guest guest
I have just had the results of my latest blood test. My doctor and endocrinologist do not know I am self-medicating. They both think I am taking 125 mg of Levothyroxine per day but I felt like hell on it, so I bought Erfa thyroid from Canada. I am taking 3 grains of Erfa thyroid a day and three Nutri Adrenal Extra and I feel like a new person!! I also take vitamin C, vitamin D, B12, Q10 and Siberian Ginseng. I would be grateful if someone could shed some light on what my blood test readings mean. Free T4 14.9 (Range - 9.0 - 19.1) TSH 0.19 (Range - 0.35 - 4.94) Also, would it be wise to tell them I'm taking natural thyroid? Many thanks, Fortunata ( McGowan)
Guest guest
Hi , Well the tests look alright to me.... and if you feel good on it then you've obviously found the right dose for you. Usually on medication people try to get the t4 in to the upper end of the range and this makes the tsh drop which scares the doctors... There is advice from the Society for Endocrinology which says that a lowered tsh (0.4) is fine but of course most doctors have not heared about this. Are your blood results on Erfa, very different to how they were on Levothyroxine? Your doctor is obviously happy with them now... I'm waiting to get my own tests done in May (I'm now self medicating with NT) and if the doctor is happy, I may tell them I'm on NT to see if I can get it on prescription. The problem is once you've told them, there is no going back. Ideally the doc should work with you and prescribe, or at least agree to monitor you, but you have to judge what the reaction might be..... Sorry I've been no help really, but congratulations on working it out for yourself!! x > > I have just had the results of my latest blood test. Guest guest
Ask yourself a question . If you told your GP and endocrinologist exactly what you are doing, the reasons why and how you are feeling since you stopped the levothyroxine and they told you that they were appalled and that they would not prescribe it for you and that if you refused to take the synthetic levothyroxine they would no longer monitor you - would you change your mind, stop taking Erfa and go back onto the levothyroxine? If the answer is no, and you would still continue taking your Erfa however loudly they complained, then you have your answer. Educate your doctors - this is the ONLY way we are going to get through to them that what they are doing by giving every single patient levothyroxine-only is wrong, wrong and wrong again. There are many people unable to convert mainly inactive T4 into the active T3 and it is T3 every cell in our body and brain needs. First, let me know whether you took your thyroid hormone replacement on the morning you had your blood drawn? The results look absolutely fine and no doctor would quake in his shoes looking at these. However, I see they did not test the free T3 - which doesn't really matter when you are taking natural thyroid extract. Blood results in this case mean absolutely nothing. It is how you feel that matters. When taking NDT your body quickly tells you whether you need more or you need less. I will tell you that when I first asked my endocrinologist if he would recommend natural thyroid extract for me, he refused point blank, giving me all the wrong reasons why he would not. I researched into the reasons he gave, found they were all wrong, found the correct information, gave it to him, asked him to read it and then get back to me with his thoughts. He did. He had read everything and said he would recommend Armour for me, which my GP prescribed. He now has many of his hypothyroid patients on Erfa Thyroid and has seen them all flourish. He has told many other endocrinologists about NDT - and this is how word is getting around. I would recommend you 'bite the bullet' and talk to them both, arming yourself first with the necessary knowledge in case they try to bombard you with the usual rubbish they spout. The British Thyroid Association wrote two Statements about T4/T3 combination therapy versus T4 only therapy (nothing backed up with scientific evidence) - both had misleading and incorrect information in them. You can read my rebuttal to both of these statements which I sent to them asking them to amend them where necessary. No acknowledgement was ever received and the misleading and incorrect information still remains - but you can show them to your doctors http://www.tpa-uk.org.uk/tpa_responds1.php Let us know how you get on.
