It interferes with blood level conversion/use of T4. Google Scholar is a good place to find specific references your doc might listen to/read that mention that propranolol is a first choice in thyroid patients BECAUSE that is one of it's minor side effects. Your dosage is pretty high compared to the lower doses usually handed out to thyroid patients with mildly elevated blood pressure, I would suspect your idea is correct.

A higher dose of T4 may or may not help with such a high dose of beta blocker. You may have to try to add T4, check your Free T3 levels to see if they are up, and then if your levels still don't come back up, look at T3 options :(

It's not a fun merry go round when there are medication interations all over the place, especially because too high and too low thyroid hormone levels have cardiac impacts too.

Hi Gill, I'm on 80mgs propranolol for about 25 years for a cardiac condition.

I've often wondered whether I really need it or not and have been thinking about

its effect on thyroid medication for a long time. Probably if my thyroid was

better then I wouldn't need so much propranolol anyway. It's a bit of a vicious

circle. At present I am trying to work on my NDT dosage as I got up to 2 grains

and started getting symptoms again but am pretty certain that it depends on the

adrenals which I am working on plus all the other obvious vits etc. I did read

somewhere that propranolol can interfere with the T3 up to 30% so I am hoping

that the eventual correct dosage will compensate for that. I think that where

good uptake or conversion of thyroid hormones are concerned then it is probably

better to think first about the adrenals, vits and minerals etc. and get them

straight and then wonder about the beta blockers. Better still in your case see

if there is something else you can take for your anxiety. All the

best.....

though you take NDT? I think I also have poor adrenal function and wondered if

the NDT alleviates those?

Hi Val,

It stops conversion. So I would have thought T3 was the answer.

Have a look at this article

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1714646/?page=1

Atenelol might be better for you than propanolol.

HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). Does propranolol interfere with the actual

conversion of T4 to T3 o
