Hi Berny

You do not say if you also have a thyroid problem as well as your current

difficulties but it sounds as if you have been suffering for some time and I

hope others will confirm my thoughts on your problems and you will soon get the

help you need from your doctor. I am the same age as you and take levothyroxine

for auto immune related hypothyroidism which is the main focus for this site.

That said I have also had similar problems to you and also in my case a feeling

of needing the loo all the time. As we age the levels of oestrogen decline and

the tissues 'dry out' and are unable to support the surrounding structures. This

applies as equally to our internal tissues as it does to our skin (think

wrinkles !!). In my case the cervix was no longer able to support the bladder so

everything was pressing down giving the feeling of needing the loo. In yours it

sounds like the natural ' elasticity' has declined to the point where it is now

causing your problems. Had I left it any longer to visit my GP I probably

would've ended up in the same predicament as you as initially they told me it

was 'irritable bladder' and prescribed anticholinergic tablets which did nothing

and like you I was spending a fortune on over the counter products which helped

a little but obviously didn't resolve the underlying cause.

Eventually I saw a very good young doctor who managed to sift through my garbled

explanation (low thyroid brain fog) and prescribed a low dose estrogen (0.01%

estriol)cream called Gyenest which is applied nightly 'locally' (i.e.

internally) via applicator until the symptoms subside. It also helps with

'itching' which is again caused by 'drying out' of the tissues. Once the

symptoms are under control it is not necessary to apply it every night and I now

use it only when the symptoms start to come back. The patches you refer to sound

like a form of HRT .There are some contraindications to using the cream which

your doctor should be aware of but mine has assured me it is safer than using

HRT or topical oestrogen cream applied to the skin as it is only absorbed into

the body where it is needed. Skin patches and creams are absorbed systemically

and could cause unwanted side effects

Hope this has been of some help and you are able to get help from your GP.

Cheers

> a friend of mine takes esdradiolo(estradiol?) 50 microgrammi via skin patches

and she said everything has gone back to normal ie premenopause. I would like

to do the same thing. any contre indications??
