Guest guest
Hi Leisha, it's no T3 containing meds( which obviously includes NDT/Armour ERFA etc) for 24 hours before test. T3 peaks at 2 hours after you take it- you will get a silly high result- at least double you would get 24 hours later if you test at that point. It's best to try to be consistent with your testing protocols ie time after last dose to make your results really comparable. > thyroid treatment > From: l.mcnamara@...> Date: Mon, 18 Apr 2011 10:56:26 +0000> Subject: How long to stop NDT before blood test?> > Hi> > Could someone clarify how long I should stop NDT/Armour before a blood test, please?> > I've read both "stop for 24 hrs before" and "none on morning of test".> > I'm due to have thyroid blood tests at 9am tomorrow morning and am not sure if I should take my afternoon dose today or not?> > Thanks for any help> > Liesha> > > > > > ------------------------------------> > TPA is not medically qualified. Guest guest
We usually recommend 24 hours to get a true picture, though no blood test results is actually 'true' when you are taking natural desiccated thyroid extract. This is because the active thyroid hormone T3 has a short half life of 2 days before it leaves the body, but it peaks in the blood between 2 to 4 hours after taking it and at that point in time, the free T3 result would be sky high, making your GP believe you were overdosing and him/her recommending you cut down your dose immediately. Luv - Sheila Could someone clarify how long I should stop NDT/Armour before a blood test, please? I've read both " stop for 24 hrs before " and " none on morning of test " . I'm due to have thyroid blood tests at 9am tomorrow morning and am not sure if I should take my afternoon dose today or not? Thanks for any help
Guest guest
Thanks for your replies and Sheila. Unfortunately, I had to decide before anyone had chance to reply and I decided to go for the statement I had read more often, and didn't take any NDT on morning of the test. Hopefully it shouldn't affect it too much (last dose 18 hours before). Thanks again Liesha > > We usually recommend 24 hours to get a true picture, though no blood test > results is actually 'true' when you are taking natural desiccated thyroid > extract.
