If you've noticed more tiredness and such over the last month it made a couple things come up in my mind:

1) Have her thyroid levels checked.

2) Have her checked for leukemia (CBC).

Both of the above can make the child feel yucky and more tired.

Sorry I can't be of more help, particularly in regards to the sudden change.

Help Please!

Hi All,I need some advice. Isabella (she is 5 1/2) typically wakes up jumping out of bed ready to start her day, but today she can barely stand up, falling asleep at the table.....it is breakfast time, this child never turns down a meal. She has absolutely no signs of sickness. We are currently vacationing in Hawaii, so I cannot take her to a dr easily, and I have no reason to suspect any illness. The last month or so she has been noticably more tired, needing naps she never needed, etc. At the same time I have not seen her energy level this low. We brought her vits with us and have been giving her them faithfully, I even gave her extra zinc in case of illness. Any ideas? Could this sleep apena? If so, would it come on this strong, this quickly? Any thougthts or ideas to help her, please send our way, I'd really appreciate it! Caroline

Thanks Qadoshyah for your help! That makes me say yikes.....cause we live in WI

and we are in HI. Not really easy to have either of these things checked for the

next two weeks. However, I will keep them in mind!

Do thyroid levels go south quickly? She has them checked regularly and they have

always been fine. We are due to have them checked again in October. In addition,

she has grown more than 2 inches in the last 6 months.

Well, maybe keep them in mind and have them checked when you're back from vacation.

You're welcome.

Thyroid levels can change very quickly. When was she last checked? 6 months ago? That's plenty long enough for them to change alot.

You're in Hawaii?!?!? You lucky duck!! Just to make to you feel a bit better, our temps finally fell here. Overcast, drizzle and cool, barely 60 degrees.I'm sorry Isabel if feeling so poorly and so far from home no less. :-( Scary enough when this happens on your own turf where you know all your Drs!I would tend to agree with everyone about her thyroid. If she is due for a check in Oct, it's been a least 8 months or maybe a years, so yes, could be the reason. Isabel had seizures as a baby too, didn't she? Any possible way those could be back zapping her energy? Is allergic to something in the air causing her airways to swell ever so slightly and causing obstructive sleep apnea? GERD keeping her awake? How's her heart, any issue with that? Is she still in a

growth spurt and you guys are just plain tiring her out with activities, time, food and culture changes? Has she been really excited and not wanting to take her usual breaks during the day ? Is it really hot and does heat bother her?I know went through some really tired times during her last growth spurt and it lasted a while. Had me worried she needed that valve. I hope it's nothing Caroline!!! Let us know. Carol in IL AIM doihavtasay1Mom to seven including , 6 with TOF, AVcanal, GERD, LS, Asthma, subglottal stenosis, and DS.My problem is not how I look. Caroline,

I cannot remember when you arrived there in HI, but do you think it could be

a combination of jet lag, time change and extra activity? I suppose not if

she had plenty of sleep. Does she have any fever, at all, even low grade?

I've had my kids act this way, with only a slight fever, and no other

symptoms (a virus). Let us know how sweet Bella's doing tomorrow! In the

meantime we'll be praying for her, and for the family, so that you can enjoy

your vacation without the extra worry!

Nate just went to the endocrinology clinic yesterday. Because he is three they are checking to see how he responds on paper to being off his synthroid for almost 4 weeks but the doctor told me that most likely he will need to continue. He said that the question is a when the thryoid will stop working not if. He said it can happen anytime and usually before age 30. He gave me a standing script to have his thryoid levels checked anytime I feel it is out of whack... How cool is that! I didn't ask for it and most likely will not use it but it does give me the mom...control! I will we thinking of you Caroline and I hope this is just a jet lag or routine change think for your daughter and that she is back to herself soon!Sherry Mom to Evan(7), Olivia(6), and (9/7/2004)*

WOW!!! what a timesaver. Can you clone this doctor? Even if you just keep track every 6 months you'll be way ahead of the game cause those levels do like to fluctuate and it would be so nice not to have to go thru all the rigamarole of setting up the endo appt, getting the labs done blah, blah blah...just to rule thyroid out as a possible problematic symptom. Very Cool.

So, Nate was on synthroid and the doctor took him off of it!?

Watch for

sleepiness

grouchyness

irritability

temper tantrums

sadness, crying over nothing

IF he has hypothroidism and has been on synthroid then it is removed it can make him depressed, have anxiety, and it might just look like 3 year old behavior...only happening more than normal.

I could have kicked our endocrinologist for taking off synthroid when he was 11, 'in case he doesn't have hypothyroidism' AND NOT Telling me that it could cause anxiety and depression!

He had a PERFECT year going in school and all hell broke loose after that. THEN the jerk doctor wouldn't call me back!

I would suggest getting a hair analysis....this is very helpful....maybe you need more magnesium but the hair analysis will give you a good indication of what is low and how you need to improve it.. The only thing I would say is that I found I needed to increase the doses in comparison to their recommendations.....(hair analysis make recommendations - http://www.novadetox.co.uk/acatalog/digestive-aids.html )

You are definately hypothyroid with temp and symptoms such as you say....and family history....you need to support your adrenal glands and supplement both HCL stomach acid and other pancreatic enzymes..this will help with absorption of nutrients in both food and supplements.

Take low GI foods before bed in accordance with your diet for diabetes....and did you say you take chromium.
