I looked up the word remission in the online medical dictionary. Here is

what I found:

Margot

Remission

<oncology> A complete or partial disappearance of the signs and symptoms of

disease in response to treatment. The period during which a disease is under

control. A remission, however, is not necessarily a cure.

Origin: L. Remissio

(14 May 1997)

Hi Margot,

Here is why doctors like Dr. Druker do not like or use the word

'remission'......and prefer to say 'response'. Unlike other cancers, we

don't achieve a remission and then stop treatment......our CML only stays

under control if we continue treatment. Above, where it says 'in response

to treatment' sounds like treatment has stopped....it has put you in

remission and you don't need treatment....this does not happen with CML.

We often compare CML to diabetes....as a chronic condition. People don't

say their diabetes is in remission.........it might be under control with

treatment..........and this is what happens with CML.

Actually people who have a BMT and have 100% donor cells, at that time,

might think of themselves in remission vs being cured........because there

are relapses. So this is actually a more accurate way to think of BMTs.

I am an 7 year patient of Dr. Druker........and he does not think of a good

'response' as remission with the above explanation.

Congratulations, Anita. You did it yourself. You have been so helpful

to newcomers, that what goes around comes around. I couldn't be happier for

you, even though you have to put up with jerks. Stand tall, shorty. LOL

Hands & hearts,

Lottie Duthu
