Guest guest
Hi all, Someone at work came to me today with their TSH results - one was 2.6 and the next one was 4.2 - the ref range was .35 to 5.2. This person has been back and forth to docs with a lot of symptoms not least tiredness and is now getting B12 injections. I had already explained about my thyroid issues and I think they are concerned that they may may have other health needs that they need to consider. I have told them about the forum and I gave them info about vitamins that they can take anyway to help but I said I would post this and show them the reply and then it is up to them if they want to use the forum. My only question here is - 4.2 seems quite high in the range - should they be pushing for more investigations around thyroid and conversion? Thanks Stacey
Guest guest
Hi Stacey, if your friend was living in either the US, she would have automatically been given a diagnosis and started on thyroid hormone replacement as the top of their reference range is 3.0. If she was living in Belgium, Germany or Sweden she would have been diagnosed when she received her first TSH result of 2.6 - as the top of their range is 2.5, with a recommendation this be lowered even further to 1.5. TSH should be around 1 for people to feel 'normal'. I would recommend your friend to ask her GP to test her ferritin level, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc because should any of these be low in the reference range, their own thyroid hormone cannot be properly absorbed at cellular level and this will cause them to become hypothyroid. your friend should get the results of these tests with the reference range, and let us interpret them for her/him because it is a fact that if they come back within the normal range - ANYWHERE - the doctor will tell her/him they don't have a problem. For instance, vitamin B12 should come back as near to the top of the range as possible (this range is in the region of 175 to 850). Numerous doctors tell their patient they do not have a B12 deficiency when they show a result of 200. Ferritin has a ref. range of 20 to 200 for women (30 to 300 for men) and for women it should be between 70 to 90 and for men, it should be between 130 to 150). Again, doctors are telling their patients their ferritin level is fine even if it comes in at around 30 to 40. If your friend is suffering symptoms and signs (they could have a look at these in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk under 'Hypothyroidism') s/he should ask the GP for a referral to an endocrinologist, but make them aware that most endocrinologists in the UK have their specialty in diabetes and know very little about thyroid disease so they may wish to consider finding one with a good reputation. If your friend really wants help, then s/he should look no further than the forum where we now have just under 2000 members and three qualified medical advisers. Hope this helps a bit. Guest guest
Stacey, 4.2 is too high and represents a health risk. The society for endocrinology have said that it increases the risk of heart problems. Print out the press release in the files which is entitled lower TSH is ok,, and comes under the section, thyroid references. thyroid treatment/files/THYROID%20REFE\ RENCES/ x > > > Hi all, > Someone at work came to me today with their TSH results - one was 2.6 and the next one was 4.2 -
