Guest guest
Kelli- What I read in a post by Dr. Len (a contributor to another ds list) was .45 mg per pound of body weight. We give Blake 15 mgs. each day because he is approximately 30 lbs. So 100-200 mgs. per day DOES sound like a lot to me. But, I'm just going on the info that I received. Dr. Len said that it is ok to crush the tablets up and then divide the powder. I divide a 30 mg tablet in half and mix it in Blake's food. Guest guest
I had heard this too, so when I buy a multi-vitaman for the kids I always make sure it has 100% of the RDA of zinc. Most kids vitamans DON'T seem to have a lot of zinc in them. Currently we are using CentrumKids (rugrats) and it has zinc. Mom to (8, DS) and Grace (5) Zinc Hi list! Mostly a lurker here, but have a question. Thanks to this list I learned that some people with DS may be low in Zinc, so i had Austin's doc screen his zinc, and sure enough he was a little low. He told me to give him 100-200 mg of zinc/day. That seems like alot. Austin is 36lbs and is 7 years old. How much do you give your kids? I can only find zinc in 50 mg tablets at the store. How do you guys deal with this. Thank you

I think getting a multi-vitamin with zinc in it is the easiest way. But, after we realized Blake had reflux we had to remove anything that had citric acid in it from his diet. Most of the childrens vitamins have citric acid in them. UGH! You'd be suprised how many products they add this stuff to. Schulte
Guest guest
hi , my alternative person told me to limit zinc to 100mg daily otherwise it would weaken our immune systems.somish
Guest guest
It depends on many factors (no easy answers, of course!), amongst which whether you're chelating him, in which case you need to replace the zinc that's being stripped out on top of his normal needs, and whether he's copper toxic, in which case more zinc is generally needed to bring down the copper. My son, for example, takes up to a high of 80 mg at times and he's 18 kg, also. Abigail Zinc What is the dosis Zinc a child should get? Is 20 mg a day enough for a 18 kg boy?Mandy
Guest guest
Depends how short of it he is. i think I'd start with two teaspoons one at either end of the day if it's BC zinc but it's not something you want to be too heavy handed with as too much is not a good idea. There's something you need to avoid giving alongside zinc - wish I could remember what it was. Is it calcium? > > What is the dosis Zinc a child should get? Caution against giving too much zinc as it can deplete copper levels.
