Guest guest
So I was playing around over at the whaleto website when I came across links to vaccination discussion forums. I have been wanting to visit a mainstream site for awhile (just for fun) so off to BabyCenter I went. Well lo and behold, what do I see, but intelligent vaccine conversation going on. Since y'all were talking about tetanus today, I wanted to share a particular post. BEGIN QUOTE Tetanus spores are ubiquitous. 5% of humans carry it happily multiplying in their gut - no problem. If you run your finger along my un-dusted shelf, according to information I have, you will pick up 10 to the power 6 of clostridium tetani - if you bite someone, you will pass it on - every bullet wound when tested for CT usually finds it - it is everywhere and unseen. And it is a testimony to the strength of the human body that until the obstetricians twigged on the they were the major cause of neonatal tetanus - yes, even in the states, so few people ever got it... My family tree which goes back to 1560 has no cases of deaths to Tetanus. But I am really sick of looking at the deaths caused by puerperal fever - you know, where doctors didn't figure they had to wash their hands... I am quite content that my children are not vaccinated against Tetanus. And we live slap bang in the middle of the biggest horse breeding and racing area in this country. And both kids play sport on grassy fields, and are constantly with grazes. Also puncture wounds are not the major source of tetanus infections - they only account for about 40%. If you read the literature, you will even find otitis media listed. But I like all the problems from Tetanus caused in hospital after haemorrhoids were ligated. None of my family apart from me and my brother were ever given the vaccine. My grandfather died at 98 years. He served in both wars, and never had any vaccines. He point blank refused... And Flanders was no synch....my grandmother died at 89. Her major health problems towards the end was cataracts. So there are a whole lot of aspects that need to be thought about here. Not least of which is reading the manufacturers data sheet. I could add to the list of the serious reactions I've seen, but don't feel that would really be relevant. I only know of one person who had tetanus. She was about 26 at the time, was fully immunised, was an alcoholic, needle drug addict and ate junk. I was not surprised. Guest guest
Hey there HolisticMomma- I figured I better just send out what I have on this so we can continue the hot debate! I re-posted your original post at the end of this so it's possible to follow the thread. BTW. Hope your headache is gone... See, when you are talking about invasive bacterial infections (from hib, pnuemococcal and meningicoccal bacteria) I think it's a valid argument to say that we carry some of the bacteria around on the back of our throats with no disease and so the main thing is a healthy immune system. But for CT, the fact that it's ubiquitious seems irrelevant. The bacteria is harmless unless it gets into the right environment... I've never been able to find info about how a healthy immune system is going to help you if you happen to be unlucky enough to have an injury that creates the perfect environment for the neurotoxin. Obviously the author of the post you posted has a bunch of family experience which helps her be confident in her choice. I love to hear that- I met another woman who grew up on a farm and non of the kids were vaxed and they were fine etc. It gives me some confidence, but I also don't think that it predicts the future for their family or mine. Basically after 2 years reading about vaccines almost daily I feel confident that: -overuse of the tetanus vaccine has been shown to increase your chances of reacting to it - most people are unaware of that and pay no attention to the timing of their boosters, so some reactions (who will ever know how many) will be a result of this inadvertent over-use -relying on TIG is not plan for me (blood product). Don't want it under any circumstance, but don't want to be in the position where it's what my dd needs and I'm refusing to take it because of the risk of her getting contaminated blood. -any physical injury that can't be managed alone (serious or questionable injuries-one of those rare times when western medicine would be welcome...) is going to open you up for questions about whether or not you've done this vax (and therefore the others as well). I think this is more likely to happen with Tetanus than the other vaxes because in the hospital's eyes there are so many potential tetanus prone wounds (especially if you're not vaxed). It's a can of worms I don't want to have open more often than necessary (though I AM prepared to have it opened when necessary). -if you need the hospital for an infected wound and are not vaxed against Tetanus as it was said earlier today, " you will be thrown in IC and they'll pull out all the stops " . yes I could refuse to send my daughter there. There will be more toxic stuff put into her body. Not sure I would refuse though if it was warranted... Gotta get to bed... Thanks for reading. It's great to have a place to talk this stuff out, isn't it? It's hard work but it helps... ~Kelli Tetanus Information from !BabyCenter! > So I was playing around over at the whaleto website when I came across links > to vaccination discussion forums.
