Guest guest
Are you sure that delayed puberty is a problem? Two of my three dds did not reach puberty until they were 15. One did show a fair number of signs by 13. The other did not. What is the puberty pattern in your family? Ours did tend to be late blooming, but my eldest daughter still reached puberty at 12. Studies show that the fewer periods a woman has in her lifetime, the lower her risk for some health ailments...which I can't quite recall at the moment... Regardless of that. I think having your dd on iodine is an excellent idea and will likely help to make things right (whatever that means for your dd). Ignore me if I'm out of line. Guest guest
Well put Jaye, I agree, better to delay puberty to a point, but got the impression, her emotional stability is the problem. Albeit, at that age, it is important to maintain with peers. Here in the US, our beef, hamburgers are full of estrogen, put there by feedlot docks, to increase cattle growth/fattening. Estrogen being very bioavailable orally, whereas T is not. Her unusual fears and emotional stability seems to be more important. I have managed my hormones for ten years, learned a lot although some of it was slow coming, not at all helped by our medical community. Hormones and our immune system are the foundation for emotional stability. david lubbock tx On 4/29/11, jprocure@... <jprocure@...> wrote: > Are you sure that delayed puberty is a problem? Guest guest
I wouldn’t consider it delayed, more like what it used to be. Before we developed xenoextrogen producing products and used hormones to make meats grow faster and started eating lots of soy beans, etc., the normal ages of puberty was later. I would be happy, it is better for your daughter! Donna in IL Are you sure that delayed puberty is a problem? Two of my three dds did not reach puberty until they were 15. Guest guest
Thank you Jaye. The delayed puberty may not be so much of an issue - that isn't so much of a worry. What is a worry is the rest of the symptoms and the hormone imbalances. One Dr has described her as looking as though she has Cushing's - as well as the truncal obesity she also has a buffalo hump. The headaches are a real concern, especially as they are virtually constant and seriously affect her life. The very low cortisol results are also a concern. I don't know what is causing this, especially as her aldosterone levels are normal. Does anyone know why the other hormones are so elevated? If she has a tumour on her pituitary gland for example, do we know if iodine will help with this - should I incease the iodine as others do for cancers. Many thanks for your help. > > > > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a member for several months reading all the posts. I am in the UK. Guest guest
My grandmother did not reach puberty until she was 16. I think now days we expect it sooner because it is happening so much sooner on girls. I would celebrate a later development in my daughter figuring that I had done a good job of keeping outside estrogens and toxins out of her to influence and early puberty. I think 13-15 yrs used to be the normal. Buist, ND Re: Help for 13year old daughter - delayed puberty Are you sure that delayed puberty is a problem? Guest guest
I would find a BodyTalk practitioner to help the different body parts to communicate with each other, then go from there. Guest guest
I am one of 3 sisters. One entered puberty at 12, one at 15, & one at 17 -- same family, no apparent health issues to skew the situation, except that I was the fat one & started earliest, which is typical of overweight girls. There is a wide range of normal, & I sure wouldn't be worried at 13. (Many girls are going into precocious puberty these days, but that is not a good thing. It could just be that you have protected her from some of the hormonal influences that cause precocious puberty.)And Jaye is right that most experts seem to agree that the fewer periods a woman has, the lower her risk of hormonally driven cancers -- breast, ovarian, etc. Women used to have more children, & nurse them for long periods of time, which was a protective factor we have lost. (You don't have periods while pregnant, & many women don't while nursing.) It is actually better for her to start later (which is one of the reasons precocious puberty is so worrisome.)The iodine protocol tends to balance hormones for most people, I think, so it is possible that a while on the protocol will be really good for her. What kind of hormone testing did they do? A lot of docs do blood tests, which (according to Jerry Sloane of www.alternative-health-group.org )is very unreliable. He always insists on saliva testing, & has info on his site about balancing hormones with natural hormone replacement.AnneOn Apr 29, 2011, at 6:11 AM, jprocure@... wrote: Are you sure that delayed puberty is a problem? Guest guest
Dear Anne, I think that it is unlikely that I have protected her from some of the hormonal influences that cause precocious puberty - she did unfortunately have soya infant formula and has had alot of soya since - that was until I learned from this group how dangerous it is. I posted the test results - these are private test I have had done - one was a 24hr urinary test, another was a saliva test and the TSH & T3 etc. was a blood test. Her cortisol is very low and I don't know why. She uses natural progesterone cream as it helps the headaches, but the test suggests that she is high in progesterone, so that is confusing. I have mentioned that one Dr described her as looking as though she has Cushing's. but her cortisol levels are very low rather than high. I just wish I knew what was going on. Guest guest
Hi ,How much and what kind of magnesium is your daughter taking? Headaches, the fear, progesterone helping can all be signs of magnesium deficiency. Your body uses magnesium to make progesterone, so getting her levels built up may help. It is an easy thing to try, and you can take a lot – 800mg or more to help get the levels up.You need a good quality – mag chloride is what your body converts all form to, but mag malate, mag citrate, mag taurate are also good forms. Mag oxide is a horrible form. Stay away from it, your body utilizes very little of it. Or you can use transdermally magnesium oil, which is mag chloride also. Also, it would really help to have Free T3 and Free T4 levels. Just T3 doesn’t really give you any useful information. Most people feel better in the upper third of the Free T levels. Do you get good fats in your diet? Sometimes that helps with difficult behavior – EFA’s, coconut oil, olive oil, butter. How about liver support? Or a liver cleanse? That could help get build up toxins out of her body and help her feel better. Does she take the recommended daily salt? And have you tried salt loading when she gets a headache? Sorry, lots of questions, but want to help. I know how frustrating it is to have a child that doesn’t feel good and you can’t figure out what is wrong. Keep on, everything you do will help. I was searching for your original comments about the hump, there have been discussions in the past about that, and you might be able to find answers in the archives on that. Guest guest
That is why I mentioned the saliva tests (for sex hormones) -- if the progesterone tests high in blood, that might not be meaningful. You wouldn't expect to feel better on progesterone if you are already too high. So maybe the sex hormone values are skewed by the form of testing. But if the sex hormones were tested in saliva... (And other sex hormones are high, too.) As you say, it is confusing to respond well to something that you are already over range on.AnneOn Apr 29, 2011, at 2:12 PM, m.kidson60@... wrote: Dear Anne, I think that it is unlikely that I have protected her from some of the hormonal influences that cause precocious puberty - she did unfortunately have soya infant formula and has had alot of soya since - that was until I learned from this group how dangerous it is. Guest guest
, <I just wish I knew what was going on.> This is certainly an understandable desire on your part. However, it may be that you don't really need to know anything beyond what you already know: the tests show some out-of-range levels and your young daughter is suffering from a few emotional problems as well as physical symptoms. Clearly she's not doing very well right now. We always want to know what caused a given problem, and what the name of that problem is -- mostly because we believe that will help us find exactly the right solution. And sometimes it does help to have a name, and there are specific remedies that can make a difference. Mostly, though, the body heals itself when the "terrain" is right. That is, by doing everything we can to promote health in general (such as using iodine) we establish a "terrain" that brings everything into balance for optimum health. You sound like a intelligent and conscientous mother, already knowledgable in certain areas and open to new ideas. As you continue researching and learning, keep in mind the idea of a systemic approach. It could make your journey easier and more rewarding. Guest guest
Ok, I missed the other concerns. Have you checked her thyroid levels? TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 are the most important. Low thyroid messes up the adrenals. How did you test adrenal status? Are you doing anything to address the adrenals? Low cortisol will result in low sex hormones too. I know there is a link to sodium and aldosterone but it escapes me at the moment. Dr. Brownstein addresses it in his Salt Your Way to Health Book. I can look it up later. Right now I am working on supper for the family. Let me know if you want me to look into it. Buist, ND Re: Help for 13year old daughter - delayed puberty Thanks ,I do think that I have confused the issue with mentioning delayed puberty. I don't know what is causing this, especially as her aldosterone levels are normal.Does anyone know why the other hormones are so elevated? If she has a tumour on her pituitary gland for example, do we know if iodine will help with this - should I incease the iodine as others do for cancers. Many thanks for your help.> >> > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a member for several months reading all the posts. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Thank you so much for your reply. She is having 360mg of magnesium as magnesium glycinate capsules. I have a cream which is MagSulfate and doesn't cause skin irritation like the mag chloride oil - I have this as well, but, at the moment she refuses it because of the skin irritation. We also do Epsom Salts baths. I did not realise thst fear was a sign of magnesium deficiency, or that the body uses magnesium to make progesterone. So I will definitely increase her magnesium intake. I will re-try the oil, if I can persuade her that the skin irritation shows that she needs the magnesium and that it will go eventually she might take it. We did do free T4 that was in the upper third of the range. I intend to increase her Nature-Throid, but,I will do it slowly. She eats lots of good fats - and lots of salt. She says that she feesl better when she has more sea salt. I have never done any salt loading - I have been wary of doing this with a child. She was on milk thistle for a long time, but, not at the moment. She used to get very itchy skin and burning wee from de-tox - this was before iodine. She doesn't get these now - the iodine protocol seems to have sorted this. I will have a look through the archives about the hump. Thankyou again Donna - it is a real nightmare at the moment as her behaviour is so off the wall. For a few hours after the Short Synacthen Test, she was a different child - almost back to normal! You have given me lots to think about. > > > > > > > > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a member for several months reading all the posts. I am in the UK. Guest guest
Thanks Anne - I see your point. The sex hormones were tested via a 24hr urinary test. I will look at a saliva test. > > > > > > > > > > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a member for several months reading all the posts. I am in the UK. Guest guest
, Thank you so much for your lovely, kind message. More than anything, I would like to put in place the right interventions/nutrients etc. to enable my daughter's body to heal naturally. The iodine is one of the major factors here. I am probably rather too impatient for the healing to take place! I will indeed keep your advice uppermost in my mind. > > > > > > > > > > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a > > member for several months reading all the posts. Guest guest
, If you do have time, I would be most grateful if you could look into this. My daughter's TSH when originally tested was 1.92 (0.25-5.0) and free T4 was 16.3 (12-25) A second test about month later (she was on iodine during this time) TSH was 2.28 (0.27-4.2) Free T4 17.7 (12.0-22.0) Free T3 6.7 (3.5-7.7) Adrenal status was tested first with 24 hr saliva test (samples taken at 4 times during the day, by a 24hr urinary sample and the hospital did a Short Synacthen Test, which they say was satisfactory. For a few hours after the SST test, my daughter felt wonderful, had loads of energy and didn't feel tired. I am giving a 1cm of 1%hydrocortisone cream in the morning and half this in the evening. She has sea salt and vitamin C. Her ferritin level is not ideal at 55(14-180), so she has an iron supplement. It is nearly midnight here in the UK so I am off to bed now. Hope that you have enough information here for the moment. Thank you. > > > > > > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a member for several months reading all the posts. Guest guest
One can have Cushing’s and also have low cortisol. It’s called Cyclic Cushing’s and will usually need many tests to confirm along with a knowledgeable and patient practitioner. http://books.google.com/books?id=5_ulQAM9OZYC & pg=PA286 & lpg=PA286 & dq=Cyclical+Cushing%E2%80%99s%2Blow+cortisol+level & source=bl & ots=TGDH9XZa1L & sig=UUaMNeOto0xNVQ5yklSVRogD-NE & hl=en & ei=5ES7TbubLcy1twfyt6zMBQ & sa=X & oi=book_result & ct=result & resnum=6 & ved=0CFYQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage & q & f=false and http://www.eje.org/cgi/content/full/157/3/245 From the last link above: Disorders such as glucose intolerance, mood disturbances, acne, hirsutism and amenorrhoea are present in a substantial proportion of patients. Mood disturbances may include severe depression, psychosis, neurosis, irritability, emotional lability or memory disturbances which often dominate the clinical picture. In case of mood disturbances, it has to be determined whether hypercortisolism is the cause (true cycling CS) or consequence (i.e. pseudo-CS; see further). Serum and/or urine testing for sex hormones, in my opinion, does not usually give results that matches symptoms. I know there is a lot of disagreement among healthcare professionals but I almost never see sex hormone serum testing that matches symptoms. Urine testing may be a bit more accurate, but not much. High levels of estridiol, testosterone and progesterone may indicate may indicate exogenous hormones or an endocrine pathology. Also high progesterone levels can indicate one is absorbing an outside progesterone dose very well or that the dose is too high. In this case the ratio of estrogen to progesterone would be useful. Hyperestrogenism may be due to a number of endocrine related pathologies. These include endogenous obesity, diabetes, Stein-Leventhal and adenomatous hyperplasia. In these situations the hormonal pattern is reflecting the pathology and once the pathology is corrected the hormones will usually become normal. If it were my daughter, I would have her sex hormones saliva tested to see if they confirm the urine testing and also get the recommended thyroid serum testing. I would also try my best to find a healthcare professional that is willing to test extensively for Cyclic Cushing’s (if for no other reason than to rule it out). Be Well Dr.L Re: Help for 13year old daughter - delayed puberty Thanks , I do think that I have confused the issue with mentioning delayed puberty. Guest guest
About the skin irritation with mag oil topical use: It's more an itching sensation or slight burning, and it fades rapidly. It's not like it causes a rash or anything. I used to get the itch/burn sensation that indicates my skin is trying to suck it in deeply, but now I can use it and don't get the sensation. So please yes let her know it definitely goes away if you keep using it. Also, I take baths with epsom salts in them, and I think the soaking, which is increasing my mag levels in general, helped hasten the fading of the sensation with the mag oil, lending credence to the idea that once mag levels start to rise the sensations fade. You're getting very good advice here, best wishes to you and your daughter. -- >Hi Donna, > >Thank you so much for your reply. > >She is having 360mg of magnesium as magnesium glycinate capsules. Guest guest
Since your child has had high amounts of soy most of her life I would be concerned about the estrogen levels being high. Was she taking the progesterone when this test was done? If yes then I would suspect that is why it is high. You should find a natural medicine doctor that can help you balance her hormones. The mood issues, anxiety, sleep disorders scream hormone imbalance, adrenal, and thyroid imbalances. There are many doctors that have written about this - , Rind, Starr. There is a natural thyroid group for Europe that may be able to help you find a doctor to help you. My friend who runs the Natural Thyroid Hormone group started it to help those outside the US. If this were my daughter I would work hard to get her help as puberty is a critical time for proper development for adulthood. I personallly am on 50mg of iodine with all the companion nutrients. I am posting about my daughter who will be 13 in 4 weeks. She is showing very few signs of going into puberty. Guest guest
Dear Loretta, Thank you very much for this. I had not heard of this before. It does sounds very complicated, but, I will mention this to the Dr who is helping me. I can easily do the saliva testing and take things from there. > > > > > > > > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a member > for several months reading all the posts. Guest guest
Thank you . When I first gave her the mag oil, the sensation was just too much for her to cope with. It will be worth trying again, now that her magnesium levels should be higher. It is good to hear that you are not getting the sensation now - I can use this to help persuade her to have another go! > > > > > > > > > > > > Dear All, this is my first post here, although I have been a > > member for several months reading all the posts.
