Guest guest
, You are witnessing the fact that Vitamin C converts elemental iodiNe into potassium iodiDe. The brown color also disappears. Because the body needs both forms of iodine, this is a problem. The reason Lugol's is formulated the way it is, and the reason it is so effective, is because both forms of iodine are present. For example, the breasts and the rest of the reproductive organs, both male and female, utilize elemental iodiNe, whereas the thyroid utilizes primarily the iodiDe form. So the answer is, don't mix Vitamin C and Lugol's in the same glass. I have been using unsweetened cranberry juice to cover the taste-- just an ounce or so, put my Lugol's drops in and add some water and down it-- no Lugol's taste. I also like pure pomegranate juice for this, and most recently have been pouring a tablespoon of each in my cup, the mixture is really yummy. Since I'm just using a tiny amount each day, the juices last a long time. -- At 09:26 PM 5/1/2011, you wrote: >Something strange happened when I took my Lugols. I have noticed the same thing.. if i use the glass that i had my vit c/baking soda mix in, then it deoderizers the colour and taste of iodine.. Regards Ingrid/Aus > It has hapened twice now. Guest guest
, Thanks for this information. I'm glad I wrote. I almost didn't because it tasted so much better that way. Is the small amount if vitamin C in cranberry juice not enough to do this? I didn't mind it in water, but my aide can smell it for a long time after I take it. Guest guest
Not to get too technical here, but if I drink Lugols in distilled water, and then follow it up by drinking orange juice right away.... Will the orange juice have the same negative effects on the iodine once it reaches my stomach? Also, is it safe to drink water Kefir (fermented sugar water) with my iodine?ThanksSent from my iPhone 4On May 2, 2011, at 12:06 AM, B <vbaker@...> wrote: , You are witnessing the fact that Vitamin C converts elemental iodiNe into potassium iodiDe. Guest guest
For those interested in the chemistry between ascorbic acid and iodine this link may be of in interest: http://chemistry.about.com/od/demonstrationsexperiments/ss/vitctitration.htm Page 2 begins an exercise to determine the amount of Vitamin C in samples such as fruit juice. A different kind of simple experiment would be to use something like a natural apple juice that has ascorbic acid in it. When the bottle of juice is first opened, poured into a glass and Lugol's added, the Lugol's will be purple and then turn clear so all you see is the color of natural apple juice, a cloudy tan color. If the apple juice is left open for long enough time the ascorbic acid will have dissipated from the product so when the juice is poured into a glass and Lugol's is added, the entire liquid will turn purple (or blue-black) ~ the color of iodine. > > >Something strange happened when I took my Lugols. Guest guest
When I choose a juice I make the choice based on whether the color remains or not. If the color fades, the Vit C reaction is happening. -- At 05:33 AM 5/2/2011, you wrote: >, > >Thanks for this information. I'm glad I wrote. Guest guest
The question of whether Lugol's is affected by vit C in the stomach is unresolved, because behavior in the stomach is not identical to test-tube reactions or conditions. However, to be on the safe side, don't drink liquid Vit C right away. I doubt whether tablets of ViT C would have an affect because presumably the iodine is mixing with other foods and the tablets need to dissolve before they would have an effect. But, if taking liquid Lugol's, it's probably better to take your Vit C separately. Also just to be clear, Iodoral tablets are absolutely not affected by stomach contents-- it is a coated tablet constructed to dissolve deep in the gut. -- >Not to get too technical here, but if I drink Lugols in distilled water, >and then follow it up by drinking orange juice right away.... Guest guest
No problem with the water kefir. Give it a try and see how you like/tolerate it. Otherwise cranberry (unsweetened) and pomegranate (unsweetened) have both been suggested.Jaxi On Mon, May 2, 2011 at 6:08 PM, Coyle <wcoy79@...> wrote: Thanks for the replies. So I tried taking Lugols in plain distilled water today....yuck! Guest guest
certain "kefir grains" can be fermented in simple sugar water, hence the term Water Kefire. The grains remain alive and continue to grow and feed off of the sugar that you add to the water. The concept is similar to Coconut Kefir, only instead of using Expensive Thia Coconuts, you simply used water with brown sugar to ferment your grains. This is of course entirely different that Orange Juice; however, I am still not convinced that it is safe to mix with Lugols as of yet. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
, I have not heard anyone talk about taking Lugols this way, but both my mom and I just put the drops into an empty gelatin capsule and then swallow it right away. Just make sure you drink enough water to get it all the way down!! (I made that mistake once and it is a painful one!!) I eat my breakfast right after I swallow my capsule and have done just fine that way. Lucinda > > >> >Something strange happened when I took my Lugols. Guest guest
, I see now. I wasn't sure if it was simply the ascorbic acid (contained in vitamin c/ orange juice) that was the problem, or if it was the Sugar that was the problem. Hearing people suggest Unsweetened cranberry/pomagrade lead me to believe it was a Sugar Issue. Thanks for clarification. P.s. Just for the record, distilled kefir water with organic brown sugar is pretty brown in color. That being said, it is hard to tell if the iodine is being effected/ changing color. Do you think water kefir is safe to mix Lugols with?Sent from my iPhoneOn May 2, 2011, at 10:20 PM, B <vbaker@...> wrote: I've addressed this question already. Guest guest
, I definitely believe that the water kefir is safe to drink the Lugol's with. And yes, it has nothing to do with sugar (although, isn't the sugar converted to polyphenols and other good stuff in your kefir?). I brew kombucha, and I promise you, none of the fermented drinks will cause you a problem unless, as was noted, you've added lemon juice or something to it and the addition contains sufficient ViT C to cause the problem. The reason we're mentioning unsweetened juices is because cranberry in particular is so often a highly fructose sweetened drink. We're making the distinction to indicate a healthier beverage. In fact both cranberry and pomegranate juices, unsweetened, are exceptionally nutritious juices. Btw someone mentioned that maybe that was why they were detoxing, was taking their iodine with Vit C. However, you are still taking the same milligrams of iodine, it's just all been converted to potassium iodide instead of containing both the iodiDe and elemental iodiNe forms. The reason you haven't had any detoxing is because a) your detox pathways are working pretty well, you have a high tolerance for the symptoms and aren't noticing them, or c) most likely, you haven't taken high enough doses for your particular body to start kicking the bromides off the iodine cell receptors, which is what causes the detox symptoms. Increase your dose. -- --V At 09:35 PM 5/2/2011, you wrote: >, > I see now. Guest guest
Um ... that was the point. Although I think it is high fructose corn syrup we are trying to avoid here, not fructose (fruit sugar) itself which is different. Using unsweetened juice avoids all the added sugars in whatever forms they happen to take but often it is HFCS which we for sure want to avoid, despite their new ad campaign trying to convince us otherwise. And cranberry juice and juice blends frequently have HFCS. Although tart I love unsweetened cranberry juice. Guest guest
Wouldn't liquid Lugols be likely to be impacted though? I recently got the C-Salts - which I am liking BTW - thanks to whoever it was on here that first mentioned them. But I would think that 4 gr of Vit C in liquid form taken at about the same time as liquid Lugols wouldn't be much different than putting the Lugols into the Vit C drink prior to drinking it. Iodoral since it is designed to make it to the intestinal tract is probably protected enough by the coating to make it okay.  Just thinking out loud since I have been planning to switch to liquid Lugols myself and am considering the logistics of it all.  Jaxi On Tue, May 3, 2011 at 11:01 AM, ladybugsandbees <ladybugsandbees@...> wrote: I have taken Iodoral and my Vit C powder at the same time for years and beat thyroid cancer. I am not sure that this is a real issue.  Buist, ND  Re: Something strange  certain " kefir grains " can be fermented in simple sugar water, hence the term Water Kefire. Guest guest
While I was using Lugol's I was able to get rid of all my breast cysts and I was putting the Lugol's in orange juice every day. Since the breasts use the iodine portion of the Lugol's I was getting the benefits from it even though it changed color in the juice.
