: I think Restless leg syndrome is a fake disease so named to sell drugs. I believe it is nothing more than a dressed up calcium/magnesium deficiency which MD's can't get. Bleeding gums they get- vitamin C deficiency; muscle cramps, irritability- oh my god drug defiency. Sorry, I am very cynical. Add calcium and magnesium and all of these symptoms go away within days and never return as long as the calcium intake is steady. I have them take 300-500mg of calcium twice a day- morning and night. Restless Leg Syndrome

Good morning Docs,I have a patient who has symptoms of RLS and I was wondering if anyone has had any success with treatment options. She was on Levodopa, which had good initial results and then fell off. She was then switched to ReQuip (ropinirole) which made her extremely nauseas. I have read that there is "no cure", but also read that Iron + Vitamin C has been effective (if blood iron levels are low naturally) and that anemia should be ruled out.Any other options out there? Successes? Thanks!

I had one patient with

symptoms of RLS who took the Iron and C combination with apparently good

results.

Liquid minerals will s top it in its tracks. Then, when you add the powdered calcium at bedtime (for better sleep) I hear NO MORE about it.

,

I have my patients who suffer from RLS take the juice of half a real lemon (not the bottled stuff!) in 4-6 ounces warm water before bed. Works great. Probably gives them Vit C and all the minerals they need in a balanced fashion.

Be careful Sunny, that’s evidence

based medicine.

By the way folic acid has been beneficial

as well as vitamin e, iron and magnesium in some cases.  I have citations!!!

Just a suggestion about Restless Leg Syndrome. I used to suffer from it terribly, but two "weird" supplements have helped me immensely.

The first is that I supplement with magnesium. The only way I can take a high enough dose is by using a sustained release formula (I don't know if it's OK to say a brand name).

The second isn't actually a supplement. Someone told my husband that placing a bar of soap in the bed helps prevent leg cramps and restless legs. This sounds so weird, but there are testimonials all over the Internet -- and no one is making money off these testimonials. The guideline is that any brand of soap works except Dial, Dove or Ivory.

Since "sleeping with soap," my leg cramps have gone from several-per-week down to one or two per month. My restless leg syndrome has completely disappeared. I hope this helps.

P.S. I also have Hashi's.

Hi Dr. L. and everyone else:Kira in Oregon here. If you're able to clarify the iron/cancer/autoimmune issue for me with input, it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm a Hashi's/multiple autoimmune disorders patient with chronically low ferritin and severe restless legs, for which I take 30 mg. iron glycinate nightly. I also do the iodine protocol for FBD.

1) Where to put the soap?

We keep it between the top and bottom sheets near our feet. Some people say it works fine under the bottom sheet (right on the mattress) but I find it works better if it's touching my leg. If I do get a leg cramp, I take my "good" leg and shove the soap bar right onto my "bad" calf. It subsides pretty quickly.

I do have to be careful, though, to take the soap bar out before I launder the sheets! :-)

2) My favorite magnesium brand is Jigsaw Magnesium. It has a time release formula that allows me to take 1500 mg per day without gas/cramping/diarrhea. They recommend 2,000 mg per day, but that pushes me over my "digestive tolerance." Magnesium has been a life saver for me, literally curing me of debilitating depression, as well as leg cramps and restless leg syndrome.

I have just started taking the magnesium oil spray - 4 sprays 2x/day. Nowhere on the bottle does it say what the dosage is to 4 sprays. It's Swanson's Ultra - does anyone know what the dosage is to this product?

There is no dosage when it comes to that. I use it on my feet, legs and thighs every night. From: Cole <rightwithme1@...>iodine Sent: Sat, May 14, 2011 6:23:01 PMSubject: Re: Re: Restless Leg Syndrome

Toni...is the 2,000 mg recommendation for restless legs only or for general health. I take 800 mg. Jigsaw magnesium in divided doses and am wondering if it is enough. I am being treated for high blood pressure and would love to get off the meds. Magnesium is good for blood pressure.

I use the same kind. I didn't consider that a dosage but a recommendation on how

many sprays to soak an area. Don't try this, but I spray it on my cheeks and jaw

line for TMJD. Can one really overdose taking it topically? It seems like it

would take a lot! But I don't know...I can't seem to get enough magnesium to

make a difference. By the way, is there any connection between iodine and muscle

problems/joint inflammation getting worse? My TMJD got really bad after taking

iodoral.

Magnesium sprays are typically pretty weak. And the only way of

finding out if you have too much is if you start having loose

bowels....

I have personally been help, and so have several of my patients, by doing an elimination diet then re-introducing foods to find the "hidden food allergy," ala Metagenics or Biogenesis. Dairy is the most common for this symptom. Medically it is associated with a dopamine disfunction but I would work with the diet first.
