Street Theatre Project - India

Summary

This street theatre project for sexual health education is a

programme of the Naz Foundation located in New Delhi that

was established with the objective of developing a model which

would utilise mime, movement and the provision of advice and

education in local city areas to develop awareness of

HIV/STD's and encourage informed reproductive and sexual

health practices to minimise rates of infection.

Main Communication Strategies

By utilising dance and movement as a medium

of education, a culturally appropriate methodology of

education based on grassroots involvement was created. Street

theatre was performed targeting youth. Development Issues

HIV/STD's, reproductive and sexual health, Youth, safer

sexual practices

Key Points

The theatre format develops participatory

educational performances in an area where open

discussion about sexual behaviours is often taboo, yet informed

debate is practically difficult utilising current models of

education. This format also enables audiences to get accurate

information and access individual advice.
