Guest guest
Thanks Dale, I took him in and we saw a PA and she agreed he wasn't going to get over it on his own. Turned out he has two ear infections too. yuck. So ear drops and Augmentin should help. On the way out we ran into our ped and he asked what we were doing there, I told him and then told him about Nick's IVIG yesterday and how they couldn't get an IV started. I said that we are still fighting for the port, and as of last month, I thought he was on my side too. Today tho he says, does Nick even really need IVIG? I am still wondering if my mouth hit the floor. I said I think so and that his infusion nurse is asking the immuno again for a port in . So the ped would probably be getting a phone call next week about it. Since our immuno is not in out town, the port would have to be placed by a local surgeon and set up thru the peds office. Guest guest
from Dale, Mom to Katy, CVID< age 20 Amy, just a thought. Have you given your pediatrician the IDF stuff -- Patient and Family Handbook, Physician's guide, etc. Also, there's a newsletter for physicians called Clinical Focus. I would make sure he's getting those things because your pediatrician can be SO helpful if they are working on your behalf AND understand what they are dealing with. Guest guest
Hi Amy, I saw your post and wanted to reply while I had a moment, even with on IVIG we still get abx for infections, especially sinus infections, they tend to get nasty with her. She is also treated for 21 days for each one. She is not getting as infected as before IVIG but still getting some. Although we have pulled her out of school and her tutor started today, it went awesome. had her port place on Wed, it went well, it was a very hard decision for us to make. Guest guest
Hi Annette - thanks for the endorsement. I have a Grossan Irrigator that was generously given to me by an online friend and have been too tired or lazy to go to the trouble to use it very much. Think I've used it maybe a dozen times in a year. I feel terrible about that. Thanks to your email, I'm going to give it a real go -- twice a day for two weeks (to start) and see what happens. I've had a real low grade infection for probably 20 years, CFIDS for 8... Thanks, Dan > > I'm a big fan of the Grossan Irrigator after years of sinus infections. Guest guest
I know this may sound screwy. Make a strong infusion of Greek oregano. Then, soak your feet in it. Guest guest
I remember years ago when I could not get rid of a sinus infection, a nurse told me to take beta carotene~she recommended taking three 25,000 IU capsules a couple of times a day for the first few days, then gradually decreasing it to one capsule per day for a bit more. I had been on three rounds of antibiotics without success, and this finally did the trick. The other bit of advice I received was to sit in the sun for 20-30 minutes each day. Of course this most likely translates to getting more Vitamin D, which we are hearing about more and more lately. Are you using saline solution spray in your nose? This also helps me a lot now and I regularly flush my sinuses before I shower, then flush them again afterwards to get rid of as much stuffiness as possible. in La Selva Beach CA

Guest guest
Edy: Who knows what is going on. What do you do to address fungal issues in sinuses? I use Nasonex for allergies on a regular basis also. My house is dusty and most likely has some mold since we live on the coast as you do. Are you having some sunny days lately? The mornings have been cold but half my house is sunny and warm~I sit in the dining room window and soak it up like an old dog or cat (our cats love it, too). Even our son found he likes sitting in the sunny window. I have no money to visit doctors anymore as we are helping our son with rent and expenses. I tried an allergist earlier this year and he was a joke~just reviewed what I was doing and said okay. My regular MD is better than he is, and it cost my school $328 (we pay our doctor visits) for his lack of suggestions. What a disappointment!! Guest guest
>What do you do to address fungal issues in sinuses? I've had a few of these. Diflucan has worked like a charm for me, and in a day or two. At least then i knew it was a sinus infection. Unfortunately, when i stopped the Diflucan, the infection came right back. Once I was on Diflucan for a whole six months before I could stop the drug. The best long-term strategy for me has been to keep yeast levels in the gut really low. If they get too high, they move into the sinuses (and even the inner ear). This has been one of my worst acute CFS problems. it has made me extremely sleepy and exhausted. once it triggered a horrible form of vertigo called bppv. I hope I don't get that one again, and so am motivated to stay on the anti-yeast plan. unfortunately, some kinds of yeast are Diflucan resistant, of course. The other treatment I've found useful for any sort of sinus infection is colloidal silver nasal spray.

Guest guest
My DS used MSM, a form of sulphur - bonus: he no longer snores! It is safe for children as the LD50 is the same as water! I bought a kg for $60 and distributed it among the family. It is great if you are suffering the lactic acid effects of excessive exercise. there are many other good effects too. " The minimum effective dosage of supplemental oral MSM is 750 - 1,500 mg per day: The optimal dosage of supplemental MSM is presently regarded as 2,000 - 5,000 mg per day. The usual therapeutic dosage of supplemental MSM for the alleviation of Pain is 2,250 mg per day. Toxic Dosage Doses of up to 30,000 mg (30 grams) of MSM have been used on a daily basis without adverse effects occurring. “Waiting Period” Most people who use supplemental MSM do not notice any therapeutic effects until they have used MSM on a daily basis for several days. Some people do not experience therapeutic effects until MSM has been used daily for several weeks. Guest guest
Hi, Jill The antibiotics can make it worse, not just from the side effects like the stomach ache. If the reason behind the sinus infection is not a bacteria, the antibiotics will have no effect, except the symptoms might temporarily subside then come back. Then you are stuck in the antibiotic cycle. You need to find the cause. I would look first to diet. Does your son drink milk? Are there any mucus producing foods he eats (oranges/citrus, peanut butter, wheat, bananas, fried foods)? It could be carpeting in the house that might not be a problem when he's outside more, but during the winter it is. Where do you live? Guest guest
Jill, When my son was about 4, he had such a severe sinus infection and blockage that they were talking sinus surgery to clean him out. I became very nervous about that and started looking for other answers, I highly reccommend and book called " Sinus Survival " by Ivker. Lots of good info. Basically the oral antibiotics will never get into the sinus cavity because there is no blood flow there. If your son is taking any antihistamines, you need to stop - they make things worse by thickening the mucous. The mucous then cannot drain and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. He needs decongestants and guaifinesen (sp? - an expectorant and mucous thinner like in cough syrups). See your doctor and discuss this option with him. Also, our doctor will prescribe a compounded spray that contains and antifungal, antibiotic, and steroid. Works great!!! I have been dealing with a recurring sinus infection myself recently and this cleared it up in three days! The label says CLIN/BETA/CLO nasal spray. Email me directly and I will get the exact composition. Also, most sinus infections are fungal related they are finding out. Be careful with the humidifier and make sure it is thoroughly cleaned daily to prevent fungal growth there. Hope this helps! Guest guest
I have a friend whom I have known for 20 years who has been on and off steroids, antifungals and antibiotics and has had " sinus surgery " 4 times in that time. It was bi-lateral antral lavage, a septoplasty and the turbinates were trimmed the first time. Now she can have no further surgery. She can't spray anything in her nose because the skin is so thin it breaks. Sneezing also breaks the skin. Her own dr is heading for the same result - she has had 4 " surgeries " too and lives on medications to suppress the symptoms. Every time they finish the steroids, they are left vulnerable to infection. I would not reccommend steroids, antifungals and antibiotics for anyone, and especially not for children, as it is setting them up for chronicity. I had one surgery nearly 30 years ago, then polled among friends and family as to who had been cured by the allopathic regimen. Out of eleven others, not one had been cured. Certainly a good long-term money spinner for the medical profession though. Maracuja > > Hi, Jill The antibiotics can make it worse, not just from the side effects like the stomach ache. Guest guest
Hello Natasha, Sorry I didn't explain. MSM is methylsulphonylmethane which is an endogenous form of sulphur. (Produced in the body.) Highly bioavailable, Vitamin C helps conversion from MSM to sulphur. It's similar to DMSO (dimethyl sulphide) & is the active therapeutic part of DMSO (often used for alt cancer therapy.) The body's content declines with aging. Here are a few other things it's good for. Inhibits cross linking of proteins (like collagen) Improves circulation Alleviates hangovers (so take it before well child visits - just kidding! LOL!) Constipation, heartburn, roundworms - prevents them adhering to intestinal wall. Eyedrops reduce pressure in glaucoma patients. Food allergies, cancer prevention, breast, colon, common cold, detrimental fungi on skin when topically applied, inhibits protozoa Entamoeba hystolica esp when used with cats claw. Also Giardia lamblia & Trichomonas. May help prevent flu, prevents & treats SLE form of lupus, reduces toxic lactic acid after exercise, Alleviates bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, enhances cartilage health, Lots more. I'll make up a doc to send you if you want. It contributes its sulphur component to methionine and some (less) to cysteine, also to chondroiton sulphate and IgG. Best of all it is found in raw fruits & veg (esp cruciferous) seafoods meat & milk. Most people don't get enough as it degrades & is highly susceptible to loss during processing and few people eat primarily raw food. Doses up to 30.000mg have been used on a daily basis without adverse effects. Therapeutic effects aren't usually noticed for a few days. It can be bought in capsule tablet or loose powder form. Also lotion & eyedrops. You can make your own nasal spray or use it orally. Guest guest
That does make sense about the harvest season. Some say to look at the favorite foods, or those they crave, for an allergy to them. Doris Rapp has a great book out regarding environmental allergies called Is This Your Child? Here's a link to her webpage: http://www.drrapp.com/yourchild.htm I actually went to an environmental med doc listed in the back of her book, one of just a few back in 1993. I learned a lot--didn't like the solution (food drops before each meal), but I highly recommend it for the info. There are other ways to get back in balance. One thing I took from it was that milk is especially dangerous to some children. If you take them off of it, then put them back on to test to see if they have a reaction, there can be a violent one. Even knowing this, I took my child off, then put him back on and FORGOT because he became so out of control I couldn't focus. He ended up with a severe ear infection/wheezing attack--drove me nuts for three days, no sleep, spinning in circles. So, be cautious. You should eliminate dairy products entirely, and if you can't eliminate the others, at least don't give them every day. Good luck!
