Guest guest
Letmar-- I make my own Lugol's. The raw material does not have an expiration date. The liquid doesn't really, either. It can evaporate over time if the container is not adequately sealed, but it's essentially the same a year or two later. It's up to you how you prefer to balance raw material vs. liquid made up already. I have the bulk of my Lugol's in a glass jar with tight-fitting lid, and decant a couple ounces at a time to an eyedropper bottle that is my daily dosing bottle. Definitely want to do it that way so that the bulk of your supply stays shut tight most of the time. -- moderator On 19 Jan 2012 at 16:33, letmar123 wrote: > Thank you so much for such wonderful information. Guest guest
Hi I will answer in the order you asked and maybe someone already answered this but.1 Not that I know of . I believe it will last years2 I think it can last like 3 years or more3depends how much your using. If you don't mind just making 1 oz at a time that should be ok 4 I store mind in the fridge and put wax paper between the glass jar and the metal lid.Walmart had the glass droppers in the pharmacy department for $2.00 for 2. It is so easy to make your own. I gave some to my sis and she started her family on it. Hugs rae From: letmar123 <letmar123@...> iodine Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2012 11:33 AM Subject: Was: What??? Guest guest
In response to your questions, if your seller furnishes the iodine crystals and potassium iodide separately in glass or chemically inert sealed-lid jars there should be no " expiration date " as such: they're minerals/mineral compounds. That said, they will degrade somewhat, especially the iodine, if exposed to heat and light which is why iodine is typically sold and kept in amber glass bottles, and stored in a cool, dry environment. NB: I don't recommend refrigeration ... too much humidity. When mixing, use only sterile/distilled water and combine the potassium iodide with the water first, before adding the iodine; the KI solution is the only way to make iodine crystals dissolve in water. Stir the mixture (room temp water, NOT heated -- remember, heat degrades iodine -- either with a glass rod or a wooden implement you don't care about, because it will be permanently discolored; don't use metal, because iodine has corrosive qualities and you don't want stray metal ions floating around in your mixture. The most favorable storage vessel is an amber glass bottle or jar with a teflon inner-seal lid at the top. If you can't swing teflon, a plastic threaded lid will do, but it will discolor. If you must use a metal top, put a layer of waxed paper (NOT saran) between the metal lid and the iodine mixture, and I would suggest changing the waxed paper seal every month or so. Otherwise the iodine fumes themselves will corrode the metal top away and contaminate your solution in the bargain. Unless you're using large amounts of the solution at regular intervals it might be better to prepare it in smaller amounts, provided you have an accurate scale and are comfortable doing the measurements and calculations to break the product into smaller segments. The liquid, if kept in amber glass in a cool, dark environment, does not degrade quickly, but any chemical solution will degrade somewhat over time, no question. Trust this is helpful. Guest guest
Thank you for the info Magaera and others! I finally made my Lugols. It was very easy to make. I followed the instructions in the video of Tony, (Rae gave us the link). Unfortunately I made the mistake that after making the mix I did not seal the lid top properly overnite. (I put the lid on but was not screwed well all the way). This morning I see a salt like crust around the top of the glass container. I am hoping that it did not lose too much potency. It still smells strong but it could be that it is not 5-7% lugols anymore? I am so bummed! Any thoughts? Thank You!
