Hi Kate,My understanding is that using iodine can make your TSH rise for a time and then it levels out. One function of the TSH is to make more NIS (symporters for the iodine so the body can utilize it properly. Did they also check your Free T3 and Free T4 levels?

Dr Brownstein talks about this in his Iodine book. Do you still have it so you can reread chapter 6? in Alaska

FORWARD FROM KATIE:

-------------------------------------------------------

Hello, new to the group, with a big question!

After reading Dr. Brownstein's book on Iodine, I decided to try supplementing

with Iodine, to see if it would help my

fibrocystic breasts. I've had normal TSH levels in the past, but have also been

measured at slightly high TSH levels before,

too (which I'm told means slightly Hypo, or low).

However, since I've been doing this, I've had some periods of extreme

tiredness, and my menstrual cycle started to go haywire

with periods appearing more frequently (approx every 2 weeks apart). I went to

the gynecologist to see what was wrong, and

she measured my TSH level at 5.15, which is elevated (Hypo) and advised me

to see my General Practitioner. I have an

appointment with my GP tomorrow morning.

It occurred to me that I may have screwed up my Thyroid with the Iodine, so I

stopped it altogether 2 days ago. I am

wondering if Iodine can actually screw up your thyroid function and make it go

Hypo?

Thanks,

PS-- I have been taking the following for approximately 2 months:

2% Lugol's Solution -6 drops (37.5 mg)

VITAMINS

B2 - 100 mg

B3 (Niacinamide) - 500 mg (I see in retrospect that Dr Brownstein recommends

both of these doses of B2 & B3 TWICE a day,

though) B12/Complex - 1-2 dropperfuls Alphasorb C - 500 mg D3 - 5,000 IU

(down from 10,000 IU -Doc loaded me bc I was

deficient, will go down further from this amount soon) Gamma E

Tocopherol/Tocotrienols - 1 supplement/day Rainbow Light

Women's One Multivitamin (does contain 200 mcg Selenium, sufficient per Dr

Brownstein's recommendations)

MINERALS

Zinc Picolinate - 22 mg

Catalyst Altered Trace Minerals (incl. Magnesium 337 mg, Potassium 6.8 mg,

Sodium 6 mg, etc.....there is some Selenium in

trace amounts) COQ-10 - 100 mg Chromium Complex - 200 mg Food Based

Calcium -500 mg (contains 250 mg Magnesium, & 200 IU

Vitamin D)

OMEGA 3s

Salmon Oil - 1 Supplement at each meal

ANTIOXIDANTS

Grape Seed Extract 100-200 mg

Cayenne Pepper - 450 mg

Ginko Biloba - 1 dropperful

Ultimate Antioxidant from Baseline Nutritionals

ADDITIONAL

Digestive Enzymes - 1/each meal (help absorption bc of Celiac Disease)

Probiotics - 2 on empty stomach in morning OR Plain Organic Yogurt in lieu of

this

PhiZymes from Baseline Nutritionals (claim to digest fibroid cysts, but I am

probably eliminating these bc I haven't noticed

improvment) Glucotor v.2 from Baseline Nutritionals (probably eliminating this)

Ever Young from Baseline Nutritionals

I realize that I am probably taking too much crap. I'm looking to refine to what is

really necessary. I just thought I'd

list it all in case any one of these things are significant. Thanks in advance!

iodine doesn't screw up your thyroid gland, it makes it better! you need to test Free T3 and Free T4--TSH can be elevated when first on iodine. minimum therapeutic dose of lugols would be 50mg and I am not sure 6 drops of 2% lugols=37.5mg. that doesn't sound right.

Hi ,

Thanks so much for pointing out that section in Dr. B's book.

So I just re-read chapter six, and while Dr B says that TSH might go up, he also

says his experience has shown that an elevated TSH without clinical signs of

Hypothyroidism is normal and expected. However, in my case, new symptoms

appeared that I'd never had previously, such as periods being very close

together, approximately 2 weeks apart, and very low energy, so I'm confused.

My GYN only performed a TSH test after I went to her with these symptoms I

went to my general practitioner afterward, and she and I both agreed that I

would take further thyroid tests after the iodine left my system, in about a

month.

What do you think?

And yes, , just to reiterate what Gracia said, TSH typically rises when

iodine is first started. You're right in the pocket as far as that goes. This

issue

is covered in the Guide to Supplementing that you received when you joined the

list and is available on the website in the Files section.

I think this is one of the lies about iodine based on the Wolff-Chaikoff effect.

This article by Dr. Brownstein was posted here about a week ago:

http://drdavidbrownstein.blogspot.com/2012/01/new-illness-strikes-media-iodophob\

ia.html

He points out the flaws in the logic that an elevated TSH when beginning iodine

is the result of going hypo. Rather it indicates an increase in NIS from having

more iodine.

I would foreward this link to your Dr, and have the frees tested to confirm

actual thyroid levels.

We need to put this idea to rest since it deters a lot of people from taking

iodine.

BTW, with a small amount of iodine (about 5 mg / day) and some progesterone

cream, I ended a decades long problem with fibrocystic breasts in about 2

months. That was in 2004, and the problem has never returned.

Hi ,I was thinking on the changes in your other symptoms. The low energy could be as simple as detox. The periods being closer together could be as simple as your body swinging like a pendulum while it attempts to regulate itself. I do not know if this is the case with you or not. The way I tell if something is just causing detox or is actually causing problems is to back down and then increase more slowly. I also chart daily to know how I am being affected. I just have a page with one line for each day and I make a note of how much thyroid medicine I have taken and how much iodine. Then I make a note of how I felt physically, emotionally, and mentally that day as I am effective in all three areas when things are out of balance.

I don't know why you would need to wait until the iodine is out of your system to do further tests. It sounds like your doctor does not understand iodine. Without knowing if your Free T3 and Free T4 levels are okay, it is hard to know what is the actual state of your thyroid's health. TSH will not tell you this.

This can be a detox symptom. You need to make sure that your Free's are where they belong if you have symptoms like that. If they are then it is detox. When I was increasing my Iodoral I began to have cycles - I hadn't had them for several years due to the RAI. They came every 3 weeks. I used a vitamin (either E or A - I would have to look it up again) to "reset" it.

Thank you so much and ,

, can you let me know which vitamin? I think you might mean A. I just

ordered some real A (as opposed to beta-carotene), because I suspect that the

beta carotene is not getting converted in my system. I was reading that Vitamin

A helps with Heavy periods and polymennoreah so thought of trying it, especially

since cuts have not been healing as well on me lately.

I have been off the iodine now for about five days? I'm wondering if I should

start taking it again and go get the labs for my t3 & t4?

Hi ,Only you can decide if you want to go back on the iodine. If it was me, I would be but then I know it makes a difference for me. Either way I would definitely get Free T3 and Free T4 labs. If you have the funds, you can get them online on your own. That way you get what you want and don't have to convince an MD that the tests you want are valid. I pay $85 for TSH, Free T3, and Free T4 through www.healthcheckusa.com. I've been using them for about a year.

Thank you . Your info has been very helpful. It's not that my doctor

won't give me the tests. We both agreed, since neither of us knew for sure

about this iodine effect on the TSH, that I'd wait until the Iodine is out of my

system to do the labs to get a reading of where I really was at, first. I still

think it would be helpful to have a base reading from which to start. She gave

me the prescription to go to Quest and I can use it whenever I want, however. I

was worried about over testing because I don't want my insurance to decline the

tests (I have no idea how many they'd cover), but I do want to continue

experimenting with the Iodine, so thank you so much for that link, which I will

promptly bookmark ;-)

And thanks to everyone else, too!

Her wanting to wait to see the result of the iodine on the TSH level seems to indicate she is using just the TSH to show the health of the thyroid. The actual thyroid hormones are what tell you that, not the TSH. (Although I get the TSH along with the other 2 because it does figure in. It just doesn't indicate the true level of thyroid hormone your system has available to use.)
