Welcome to the list! First, out of just plain nosiness, I have to ask

where in Upstate NY you are? You forgot to mention the lovely deerflies

and horseflies LOL.

Yes, your 80 proof is just fine for what you want to use.

Your spray bottles should be okay as well. Not ideal, but they will do

fine. Depending on how much EO you have in your blend. If it is a

small amount, they will take a long time to harm the plastic. What is

the percentage you are using?

Best wishes-

Thanks for your reply, Lynda!! :-) I'm about 50 SW of Albany in Schoharie

county. Yes! Of course the deerflies and horseflies, but I haven't been

bombarded with them *yet*. :-)

<<Yes, your 80 proof is just fine for what you want to use.>>

Thanks! Just out of curiosity, for what kinds of things wouldn't 80 proof

be sufficient?

Good question! I got a recipe off the internet for body mist and at this

point, I've added the following:

32 oz distilled water

1/2 c vodka

1 tsp veg glycerin

1 tsp sweet almond oil

1/2 tsp citronella EO

1/2 tsp lavender EO

1/4 tsp eucalyptus EO

1/4 tsp catnip EO

I'm still playing with the EO's to see if they are effective against the

bugs at the amounts I have...do you have any suggestions? Also where is a

good place to get bottles for such things?

Thanks so much! :-)

Oneonta for many years.

Good question! Nothing, that I know of. It should work just as well

for any AT recipes that call for 100 proof.

Marge e has a great recipe on her website for Skeeter Beater. I

might combine that with a bit of Catnip EO and then dilute it down as

you have shown above. But what you have should work very well, also.

I usually suggest E.D.Luce at www.essentialsupplies.com, but I have had

a few problems with the things in my last couple of orders, stuff like

the orifice reducers not fitting the bottles they are sold for, and

bottle tops with glass rods that shatter when you screw the lid down

tight on the bottle. Arg!

The first time I did HIIT, I slept for 14 hours that night! Now I'm

trying to be conscientious about getting enough sleep. I've noticed

that I'm tired earlier at night, so I just go to bed - sometimes a

couple of hours earlier. However, other than the physical exhaustion

right afterwards, I'm generally more awake during the day and sleep

better overall.

For most people even BFL is quite a carb reduction from their

regular/previous diet. It will take you a couple of weeks to adjust

and then you should recover a little easier.

hi, here are a couple of links to sites...

http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/displayarticle.php?aid=63

http://www.weighttrainersunited.com/getinshape.html

this has workout equipment, in a limited space (even

has it's own box):

http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/displayarticle.php?aid=47

And... beware the " crap lists "

http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/displayarticle.php?aid=24

http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/displayarticle.php?aid=24

You could also use those workout bands/exercise

ball... lots of possibilities... but you probably

wouldn't need much space with a mat and dumbbells.

Sprints outside (walking, then running hard, then

walking) would work well for your cardio. If it's

crappy out, do you have a large local mall nearby

which has stairs to climb and length to walk briskly?

In my old neighborhood, in the local park & rec flyer,

they had a local (like a block away!) gradeschool

where you could pay to walk after school hours (it was

like $5 a month or something cheap).

Good luck, and hope you do well!

Hi Everyone,

I want to thank you all for the advice you've given so far. and

, thank you each for taking the time out to offer such helpful

advice. The links supplied by both of you were awesome.

, thank you too for additional cardio options.

, you also offered some pretty good advice. My husband is a huge fan

of ' HIIT, as well as Bill ' BFL and Tom Venuto's

Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle (BFFM) and a slew of other very good fitness

avenues. I may consider switching between 's HIIT and Bill's 20 Min.

possible, at least for my first 12-weeks. It's not easy, but it's simple

and I know it works.

I find this whole endeavor very exciting.

Hi Cherita,

I'm new to BFL, too! (Though not new to working out.)

This morning for cardio I jumped on a small indoor trampoline.

Bought it from Walmart for about $25. I set it up in the family room

right in front of a mirror and clock. I originally bought it for my

kids but I am getting as much use out of it as they are. :-)

I started off with a slow jog, increased to a fast jog, did twists

(mimicking downhill skiing), then topped it off with insane jumping

as high as I could while pumping arms up and down. Whew, I'm getting

tired just thinking about it, LOL!

I miss running and hope to get back on the road soon. But with the

trampoline I got a good workout and it was easy on the joints.

Just an idea to throw out! :-)

God bless,

Sounds like you are doing great. Are you watching portions, and water? Another thing you could try is pick an specific area you would like to run. Do a trial run. Then when you do another one you can see how much easier it is. Helps you with your goal...

Hi there, my name is . I just wanted to say hello and that I would love to be able to run too. I can barely walk for long, but to run now that seems like fun. I would love to do that again. Newbie with questions

Hey Y'all! I am really ready to lose the weight this time! My hubby and I go to the gym together at least three times a week and I have been doing very well on the eating so far. I am 5"8' and currently weigh 245. I would like to be a size 8 but my truest deepest wish is to be able to run! I want to be able to run at least 2 blocks without feeling like I am going to die.I am curious though as to what I should be doing while I am at the gym. I have been doing a 24 minute circuit of machines that 24 hour fitness already has set up. After that I can do 10 minutes on the elliptical machine before I am completely DONE.I am also taking supplements like CLA, flaxseed oil, and the like.So any and all advice is welcome.

Debbie, you will see the new scoby grow across the top of the surface

of the brew, first a film which thickens into a thicker skin.

That sounds fine. Your brew is ready when it has a pleasant acidity and

tastes nice to you. From day 7 the health-giving acids are usually formed.

Very often the brew will not be fizzy at bottling time, but will acquire

the fizz during the 2nd stage of fermentation in the bottle, when the

still present yeasts will consume more of the still present fructose

and in the process form CO2 gas, which gives you the fizzzz.

Religious exemption can be taken by all - but it is helpful if you get some

help from some of the organizations there - let me know if you want email

information

There are others on this list from IL also

CERTAINLY - that is very probably what happened with you. Vaccines can

even change genes

Those with autoimmune disease are at much more risk for vaccine injury and

the children of those families who have autoimmune illnesses are much more

at risk

I will send some info

There is NO safe way to selectively vaccinate. I have seen injury and death

from just one vaccine at any age.

All vaccines cause harm - either immediate or brewing for long term. And

vaccines don't give immunity, so why risk it

Encourag you to look at my classes where this is given to you in an

organized way and can share with your husband.

Amy, your concerns are definately well founded. At least you have until April

to convince your husband the same. I personally do not know much about celiac

disease. But know that vaccines can activate auto-immune diseases in the body.

Once you have been here a little while, you will be shocked at how many serious

illnesses can be contributed to vaccination. There are lots of great articles

on this list, so I suggest going to the webpage and doing a search. If you put

in celiac disease, I am sure plenty of stuff will come up. I expect that there

will be plenty of info from others here who have way more knowledge than me.

Congratulations on the pregnancy. Your son is lucky that you are researching

this before he is even born. I wasnt aware of vaccine dangers until my first

was two. She is healthy, and only vaxed for the first 2 years. But she is such

a scatterbrain, and has really low concentration levels. I sometimes wonder if

vaccination could have caused that. Although, I have similar traits. Trouble

with concentration, and I get easily distracted. So she could just be taking

after me. But I was vaxed too. Thankfully the schedule was only about a dozen

vaccines thru childhood, back then. And I don't think I even had them all.

Remember the smallpox one though.

It is coming up to the weekend now, and the list will quieten down a bit. The

most knowledgeable ones may not be here. So, just keep asking questions as they

come to you, and I am sure you will get the info you need. If you can get your

husband to read what is posted, then that is good. My partner has been totally

converted. And it didn't take long. He has a significant history of

medicating, because of a back injury. These days he pretty much goes drug free.

Except for one that he occasionally takes when the lack of sleep is getting him

down. And even then it is only about once or twice a year he gets a script.

Welcome to the group.

Newbie with Questions

Hello - my name is Amy. I'm currently expecting my first child at

the end of April. I live in Illinois where there is only a religious

exemption allowed.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease which is an inherited autoimmune

disease. After my dianosis, my husband was diagnosed. This disease

is only controlled though a strict diet of avoiding gluten (wheat,

rye, barley). We did genetic testing and between the two of us have

four genetic markers for the disease SO our son will have atleast

two genetic markers for the diease. Those genetic markers have to

be " activated " so to speak for celiac disease to start. So, one

could live with the genes their whole life and never develop

symptoms, or they could develop celiac disease at any age. My

concern with vaccinating my child is that the vaccines will activate

his celiac genes. My questions are: is there edvidence or study done

on vaccines causing or triggering autoimmune diseases? Is it

considered safe for people with autoimmune diseases to get

vaccinations?

My second question is: my gut tells me not to vacciante. My husband

is leaning more towards selective vaccination and delayed

vaccination. I know if he reads the Dr. Sears book he will be more

adamant about vaccnating. What other resources are out there that I

can give him that will allow him to understand my concerns?

Just as an aside, my intention is to breast feed for at least one

year.

Thank you!

Amy

Hey,

My son would be that child that got one vaccine and was injured by

it. He has a gluten allergy and what we suspect is possibly celiac.

My DH and FIL both have wheat issues, although my DH was just treated

for ADD, no diet changes. My FIL found out he is diabetic two years

ago, and after eliminating all carbs from his diet, he is now

healthier than he has been in years.

So please, don't do it. Take it from me, even one was a mistake.

Raising a Vaccine Free Child was very eye opening, as was any book by

Neil Z. , the book by Aviva Jill Romm about Vaccinations, and

Cave's Book, What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About

Childhood Vaccinations. A Shot In The Dark is where I started,

I have a history of autoimmune conditions and my son also cannot have gluten. I

totally vaccinated my older son as a baby and he ended up autistic. Thankfully

the damage was undone and he's no longer autistic, but it was several years of

hard work, lots of worrying and a fair amount of cash to get him back.

My second child also cannot have gluten, but he was not vaccinated at all and is

not, and never was, autistic or even close to it.

Under no circumstances would I vaccinate a child, especially with a family

history of autoimmune conditions.

Hey Sheri,

I agree they didn't go far enough, but they did provide some good

Amy i used religious exemption in Illinois for dift schools...one militart

based and one public. Chances are they won't even know what they are required to

have!!! LOL Basically stated that as parents, based on religious beliefs,

objest to ALL vaccinations including but not limited to ... and then i listes

them, listed child's name. Stated beliefs prohibited injections or absorption

of foreign substance which will alter the natural state our child was bborn in

which would criticize our Creator and question His divine omnipotence and wisdon

as Higher Power...beliefs will not allow us to challenge His creation as we

believe we were created in His image and that begins at conception ccording to

the Bible. We take responsibility for child's heakth and safety befor God. as

memebers of society acknowledge also responsible to community so in event of

cantagion will remove shild from school when requested and keep said child

quaranined and inform school if such an incidence arieses. Signed and dated it

..

Of corse, it was properly paragraphed and everything was spelled right

LOL Probably didn't need that much detail but iw was on a roll and believe

all that so it was fun.

Our family is riddled with autoimmune conditions & my son developed

coeliac disease after being vaccinated, & unfortunately developed a

mutation for a fatal neuro-degenerative condition, they are now

saying that people with certain food allergies can have allergic

reactions to vaccines with food proteins eg. eggs, gelatin, yeast but

they never mention wheat -yet every second person you talk to seems

to be coeliac.

Rosemary - I'm sorry to hear about your son. Thank you for the link

on food allergies and vaccines. I have an egg allergy - who knows

what my little boy is going to end up with!!

I'm also very concerned with autism. My plan is to keep him on a

gluten free/casein free diet until age 3 and possibly challange him

then with a diet. There are so many decisions to be made it can be

very overwhelming at times. I'm glad I found this group though. You

are all very helpful in reassuring me that I'm making the right

choice.

Now I get to find a pediatrician...... ugh!

Hello, Margie-welcome to the group! I use tapioca gel (make your own by cooking a little tapioca pearl just covered with water until translucent, then buzz up in Vitamix) flax seed, or chia seeds (soak first) as thickeners. You can also use tapioca or corn starch for soups, but I find the gels easier to manage, since they need no further cooking. Many juices and smoothies will not keep well-once the cell wall of the fruits and veggies is broken down, they start to deteriorate quickly, so making ahead of time is not always so good, depending on what you are making. Best bet would be to put the ingredients in a mason jar and keep in the fridge, teach hubby how to buzz them up in the morning. I know some one here ( I am sure our will jump in, I am sure) DO make some juices that will keep. I often keep jars of stuff

at the ready for my daughter to buzz up when she is ready for them. The enzyme activity of some fruits and veggies makes them break down very quickly once juiced or pureed. From: Margaret <fenneyml@...>Subject: Newbie with questions Date: Sunday, January 30, 2011, 8:24 PM

Hello all,

I've been getting acquainted with my Vitamix this weekend and even my dh is impressed! I do have a couple of questions, though.

1. What do you recommend as thickeners for soups and smoothies and under what conditions would you prefer one over another?

2. I want to make juices and smoothies for my dh to take to work with him for lunch and/or snacks but I need to make them the night before because he gets up earlier than I do. Will that be ok with most juices and smoothies? Are there particular ones that I should avoid using for this purpose?

Thanks! I'm glad to be here.

Thanks for the advice! I like the mason jar idea and you're also teaching me the

slang. Guess I'll be telling dh that " I'll be " buzzing up " some soup in a few

minutes " .

2. I want to make juices and smoothies for my dh to take to work with him for lunch and/or snacks but I need to make them the night before because he gets up earlier than I do. Will that be ok with most juices and smoothies? Are there particular ones that I should avoid using for this purpose? I do a juice/smoothie before I go to bed each night so I can drink them during the next day. I load my VM up with 13 or so fruits and veg with some flax seed and a little water blend then pour into bottles I got from GNC with the metal ball for mixing things like protein powder. Put them in the fridge overnight then take them to work in the morning and put them in the fridge and drink thought the day. I have notice they will change color the next day if I do not finish them in about 24 hours. It does not seem to change the taste. So I would recommend not making more than you can consume quickly.
