Guest guest
Hi This isn't exactly nutrition, but there is something called Modifilan which is supposed to pull out toxic metals. It is made from seaweed and supposedly improves a lot of people's thyroids who take it. Doris ----- Original Message ----- Can people tell me nutritionally what are the best things for thyroid and Adrenal glands???
Guest guest
Cows need a LOT of salt. My mother was raised on a dairy and she told me about this, dairies must keep salt licks around to keep the cows healthy. Also they add salt to the feed. Milk has a lot of salt and so lactating cows require extra. Milk production goes down if the cows do not have enough salt in their diet. In fact, I read in one place that cows will lick dirt, urine and even manure to get salt if it is not in their food. They REALLY want their salt. Here some interesting info from http://www.saltinstitute.org/47c.html. Very interesting that the natural salt appetite is for BOTH sodium and chloride, and not just sodium. Appetite for salt Animals have a more well defined appetite for sodium chloride than any other compound in nature except water. Ruminants have such a strong appetite for sodium that the exact location of salt source is permanently imprinted into their memory which they can then return to when they become deficient. Bell (133) showed that when steers were trained to receive their sodium in response to pressing a panel, maximum effort to receive the sodium occurred at eight days and after, on a sodium deficient diet. Cattle also have a keen sense of smell for sodium (192). Sodium deficient steers were offered a cafeteria of 12 buckets of water with only one containing moderate levels of sodium salts. Steers would quickly choose the water containing sodium salts without having to taste the water sources. Horses have been shown to have a specific appetite for salt if the diet is deficient in sodium (132). This is not true for the other nutrients. For example, horses do not develop a preference for calcium supplements when fed a calcium deficient diet (193). This natural appetite for salt is what makes salt such an excellent delivery mechanism for other nutrients that need to be consumed regularly, but where a natural appetite is lacking. The 1984 NRC Beef Cattle committee (157) recognized this fact in stating that minerals lacking in the diet can be provided by " self-feeding " common salt-mineral mixtures when the mixture is consumed in amounts to satisfy the animals' appetite for salt. Cattle are also able to detect when they are chloride deficient. In a Cornell study, lactating cows fed a chloride deficient diet (.18% chloride) consumed 337 grams of salt a week while those fed the chloride adequate diet (0.40% chloride) ate 149 grams per week (134). Sodium levels were adequate so that cows were consuming the salt to satisfy their chloride requirement. --Kurt Re: Re: Vitamin C Why do they give salt lick to cows? Guest guest
Kurt, That was a great answer to a very short question. I have two Australian shepards that eat dirt every day...always from the same few places. Maybe they know something we have forgotten. Guest guest
Hi Tania, My mother brought me up with big ideas about Vit C. I am in no way going to belittle the importance of Vit C. I am in school for Chiropractics right now. In my nutrition class the Dr. had lots of wonderful things to say about it. However, he said not to give Vit C to children because it can cause decay of tooth enamel. I used to give it to my kids but then stopped after that. I do NOT supplement with fluoride because of the toxicity (that's another topic) and I don't want to take the chance of ruining their teeth. I did use the Emer'gen- C twice. My kids didn't like it. It was very fizzy. They don't drink soda, so they are not use to that. I tasted it and was not fond of it myself. We were given good sources of Vit C to get it in our system a more natural way: Broccili, cantaloupe, red peppers, citrus fruit, strawberries, acerole(nut). I hope this helps, but do what you feel is best. Tammy > > Hello. I was wondering if anyone was familiar w/ the Emer'gen-C > products? Guest guest
Tammy, Chewable Vit.C is indeed not so good for teeth, but you can always use something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002JI20E/103-8316267-8439827?v=glance & n=37609\ 01 It is buffered and its ph is very close to that of our bodies, and it is in the form of salt, not acid. It is powdered, and should be dissolved in water/juice/other drink. Very potent form. Tastes a little bit like salt, but MUCH LESS salty, less intense taste. My both kids drink it ok dissolved in plain water. Not sure they even realize it isn't jsut water, so mild the taste is (depends on the dose though). I like it because the form is good for the whole family, including the baby. I guess you would need to eat a truck load of broccoli to get 5000mg of vit C, LOL, - this is how much I usually take when I have an acute illness. Guest guest
I am a huge respecter of the therapeutic properties of Vitamin C, but my personal view is that what we assimilate from food sources is probably of much greater value than synthetic Vitamin C we get in supplements. A bit like when you breastfeed, people tell you there's not much iron in breastmilk. Good point - there isn't - but the iron that is in breastmilk is much more bioavailable to the baby than any *exogenous* iron source, and far more is absorbed and utilised. I've not considered the aspect of vitamin C and tooth decay - but it sort of makes sense given that the most commonly-found form is ascorbic acid - and no acid is going to be good for tooth enamel.... I also think that natural vitamins that we get from foods are superior to any form of bottled vitamins. However, I also think that soil today is so depleted of vital nutrients, that vegatables and fruits (organic or not) don't supply enough vitamins and minerals for us anymore... Guest guest
Hi Olga, Thanks for the link and just wanted to say that Sodium Ascorbate does not absorb into your body the way natrual Vit c does. I have recently just found this out because I always thought that they were the same thing. After doing research I found the difference. 5000mg WOW! We also learned that Echinacea is way better and more effective in fighting colds/illness. Give it a try and see if it works for you. I used to take 2000mg of Vit C every hour for 3 hours, then 1000mg of Vit C every hour after that. I switched to Echinacea after learning this and what a difference I saw. I also break the capsule open and put it in my childrens yogurt for them during the onset of a cold. Guest guest
Tammy, We use both vitamin C and echinacea. They work in a different way and carry different value for our bodies, and I don't think one can be substituted by another. Yes, echinacea works wonderfully! We use liquid acohol-free tincture of root for the kids, and take capsules oureselves when sick or getting there. As for vitamin C, I split 5000mg into 3-4 doses and take them morning to late evening. I also take a lot of garlic in capsules when sick, and some zinc. This combination works pretty well most of the time. Did you come across some alerts about Sodium Ascorbate? Or did you read that it is absorbed poorly? Guest guest
Hi , A doc recently told me that one could take as much as 10 gr a day of Vit C. He explained the process. Basically one cannot absorb more than X (1 gr?) a day. But the way it works is that the rest, which is eliminated (in the urine), carries the debris and toxins that are " cleaned up " by the Vit E (that's why you should also take some vit E, with food or supplements. But he warned me that I would get diarrhea with higher doses. Sure enough, when I started doing over 2 gr a day (I was planning to raise to 4, but not all of a sudden), I got diarrhea. After that I learnt that ascorbic acid is an irritant, and should be taken with care. I am now back on 1 gr, and may try again to rise the dose. How did you start with your 5 gr a day? All of a sudden or you increased it slowly? Did you get any diarrhea? Saludos, ---- Mazar Barnett 'I now belong to a higher cult of mortals, for I have seen the albatross!' (R.
