Guest guest
It seems like every drug that I have encountered through the years (and we won't talk about how many that is) for mental illness causes weight gain. I've gained 11 pounds since the last time I went to the doctor but honestly this isn't my biggest concern. Now if it doesn't start to come off once I am up and moving around, then I will be concerned. I don't know how much medications actually have to do with weight gain as much as the things that the medications makes you do, like eat or sleep or whatever. Guest guest
Theodore, 8 years ago I had a heart attack and weighed 259 lbs. They ran some test. The worst part was that it was a silent attack. My arteriers were clear, no blockage, but I had heart muscle damage. The damage was done. They found a MVP--mitro valve prolapse----valve that leaks. On top of that my cholesterol was high.  Two choices lose weight with help or lose weight without help.  I did it with not help and I have lost 97 lbs and kept 92 lbs off for 4 years now. My cholestereol is down where it needs now -----no pills.... I went from a 24W to a size 10/12 Misses.  If I can lose the weight I think anyone can, I also have asthma, RSD (left arm and left now moving to the back and right arm), MVP, Osteoarthritis, the heart attack and High blood pressure. Guest guest
After being diagnosed and hearing all that the doctor had to tell me about it, I realized that an expectation of no pain in my life is something that most likely would go unfulfilled. I hold out hopes of having entire days and maybe even weeks where the pain is tolerable. I hope to be able to function at a level that allows me to at least take trips outside the house for leisure and not just necessity. I do still hope that there is a chance that there will be advances in medicine that could get rid of the pain all together and maybe even restore function to the parts of our bodies that we can't use now, but I think realistically we are taking about decades from now. I for one would like to be able to use my leg without it having to be braced to walk. I can't allow myself to expect the pain to go away completely because I worry that I will be setting myself up for failure and won't be as likely to be satisfied with a significant decrease in pain. For all intents and purposes, this SCS is my ticket out of this life. I struggle to see the purpose of the life I am leading now. There HAS to be more out there and as soon as I can get off this couch, I am going to go looking for it. BTW, if you have a map to where it might be located, that would be a great help lol. On a side note, I did test and it was negative, but still no period. I'm not in a hurry for it to come back, now that I know I'm not pregnant lol. In a message dated 8/7/2008 7:34:06 A.M. It isn't perfect but it's a heck of a lot better than it was. It took me a year of back recovery but I managed to get better just by stopping the cycle of going to my pain management doctor who insisted on using me as his pin cushion. My weight has gone down but it isn't where I want it to be because I'm having issues still. I did see a doctor who has given me direction of what needs to be done for physical therapy and it's as simple as getting into a pool and doing water therapy. I'll eventually be going back to work in the office, but at least now I know what is needed to recover so I can make it through the day without feeling pain. **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Guest guest
I'm sorry I made it sound that way in the post. My husband is completely accepting of me and only has concerns about my weight for health reasons. As for my doctor, I told her that my weight wasn't my top priority right now and that was the last thing said about it. I won't beat myself up over this. I accept that I am who I am and life is what it is and that being said I love to eat! I've got a whole lot of nothing going on in my life right now that I have any control over and as long as my husband continues to buy the food, I will continue to eat it. Like I said in many posts before, I enjoy the eating and once I can get up and do things, I will probably take a different approach to my weight and have more concern about losing it. For right now, I have no problems with it. Why is it anyway that we value ourselves on our weight or our physical appearance? I hardly think I will be held to the same standards as I was before I got hurt. How many times do you hear people yelling out their car windows " OOOWEEE Look at that hottie with the cane! " or " That walker sure brings out your eyes baby, " Not so much...so, I think all in all, I'm okay! In a message dated 8/7/2008 6:59:55 A.M. Guest guest
Yep, I agree too. I was on pain killers and steroids for two years because of a car accident and the damage it caused to my lower back. Guest guest
Some people retain water in their system. Alot of people drink milk, once they quit drinking milk, they lose weight---lactose intolerance.  This may help some of you a From: Theodore Corn <sueandtedc@...> Subject: weight Stimulator Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 8:27 PM I've also put on weight. I've put on about 30 pounds. In my case, I think it's a combination of the meds and my thyroid. I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The problem is I can't get in to see an endocrenodegist. . I've called 5 and they are all booked up for months. The earliest I can get in is the end of Sept. (another good topic for another time). Not being as active as I was doesn't help, I was an avid walker before my injury, I try to walk when I feel up to it. Now I'm just so tired I'm not up to doing too much at all. I'm not eating much, have lost my appetite, yet I'm gaining weight. The weight came on me suddenly, and I can't lose it I don't feel comfortable, I always feel so bloated. There are days that my legs and ankles are so swollen lately, that it hurts to stand on them, making it very difficult to walk. To all the members who are losing weight congratulations. Keep up the good work .. I'm prould of you all. I think another reason pain patient might turn to food is because it's the one thing left that they can control. You've lost control over so much of your life, but the one thing you have control over is your eating. You couldn't control your injury, accident, how you got hurt. You can't control the outcome of the drs, insurance companies, the pain, how others treat you, etc, but you can control your eating. That's the one thing left for many pain patients that they can do for themselves. Sue C

Eating is one of the few things that I truly enjoy and still have the ability to do well LOL. For me, I think food has always been an addiction. I guess I find comfort in having an excuse to be able to eat what I want without the guilt. Guest guest
No, my husband is disabled as well. I'm not sure why we started having dinner so late. It seems to have gotten later since school let out. We try to eat my 7 or 8 during the school year. I think it has something to do with my sleep patterns. Sometimes I sleep very well and can stay up late and others I doze off during the day. I think this is probably just the time that I was awake the most frequently. It's okay for me and my husband but I probably shouldn't teach it to my kids. Although, my kids are so lean and athletic they couldn't find an inch anywhere lol. I am hoping that they both got daddy's genes and have super fast metabolisms. Like I've said before, maybe when I am up in the world and I'm being judged, maybe then it will matter to me. I know for sure if it starts to effect my health that I will do something different. My husband thinks I am beautiful no matter what I look like. I have to say that a lot of men (and women) say this to their significant others but few can truly mean it. In a message dated 8/11/2008 8:43:25 P.M. Guest guest
My husband was actually diagnosed before me. He was diagnosed with MS. The worst part about his situation is that he was never sick until the say we went to the emergency room. They told us that he had had a stroke. 23 years old and a stroke?!? They transferred him to a bigger hospital where he was cleared (eventually) of the stroke but diagnosed with MS. On his first MRI, he had 15 lesions. It was very very scary. He has to take an injection every single day. The site of his shot gets golf ball sized knots on his and they are so hot and red. It is awful and I feel so bad for him. Anyway, we make it. The amazing part is that he never whines about it. He is more concerned with me than himself most of the time. In a message dated 8/11/2008 11:50:13 P.M. Guest guest
YOUR ATTITUDE OF ONE DAY AT A TIME...IS RIGHT ON TARGET!!!!! I KNOW THAT SOMETIMES IT IS SO HARD FOR US TO THINK THAT WAY WHEN YOUR BACK IS KILLING YOU, OTHER PARTS OF YOUR BODY HURT LIKE HELL AND YOU JUST PLAINLY FEEL LIKE CRAP. THAT IS WHEN I KNOW I NEED TO PICK MYSELF UP FROM MY " BOOTSTRAPS " AND EITHER GIVE MYSELF A GOOD KICK IN THE BUTT...OR A LOVED ONE WILL SEE IT AND BE THERE TO DO IT FOR ME. YOU ARE A REAL INSPIRATION TO US WHEN WE ARE DOWN....YOU SEE THE LITTLE STEPS THAT IT TAKES TO GET TO THE END OF THE RACE!!! THAT IS GREAT ABOUT YOUR HEELS NOT HURTING YOUR BACK!!! I WISH FOR US ALL PAIN FREE DAYS AND SLEEP FILLED NIGHTS. GENTLE HUGS TO YOU AND ALL, KATHY G. CO-OWNER **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Guest guest
I'm loosing, it's just taking time. Eventually I'll get to where I want to be but for now I'm not pushing the issue. The neurologist said I'm doing okay for my height so he is not concerned either. Funny thing. While cleaning I came across a box that had some work stuff in it so I had to look. Well, I discovered that I can wear my heels without my back flipping out so at least now that's one less pair to purchase when I go back to corporate. *shrug* Oh well, I got a giggle about it because I remember how much it tormented my back. Knowing that I can do it means a lot. One day at a time.
Guest guest
My wife and I are also working on weight loss. It is a tough and slow process. The weight seems to appear out of no-where, and it seems to not go away. As long as you are working on it, that's the accomplishment. It's not how much you lose a week, but - DID YOU LOSE WEIGHT THIS WEEK? that matters. Keep on pluggin, Jaron/The group " Rabbi " > > I'm loosing, it's just taking time. Guest guest
Jaron  So true. One pound at a time. We gained it one pound at time and that's how we have to lose it. With that attitude. you and your wife will continue to lose the weight.  Sue C Moderator From: jmatlow <jmatlow@...> Subject: Re: Weight Stimulator Date: Wednesday, August 13, 2008, 4:57 PM My wife and I are also working on weight loss. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I have been through a lot with this epilepsy since a child it seems the only way to manage is to take it one day at a time. I have read postings from members with neurological disorders much more difficult than my own and it makes me wonder how do you manage? This has been a difficult week for me with auras acting up due to heat. The VNS is catching them but the heat and the humidity has me overly sensitive. The barometric pressure isn't helping matters either. Thank you for giving me some much needed inspiration. -Sue
Guest guest
Sue... if you don't mind, may I ask you a few questions about your auras? Many years ago....I had some head injuries....and had seizures from them...they have since gone away....but recently, I am experiencing those odors again that I would smell prior to going into a full blown grand mal seizure. I would smell celery...weird, huh? Does this happen to you? I pray to God that they are not returning...I can't imagine that they would be as I did not bang my head again or what not. Thanks for sharing something so personal with us, Sue. You are most definitely helping me...and if you are helping just one other person, then I have found that you are helping a lot more too. Gentle hugs to you and yours, kathy g. co-owner **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos.
