Guest guest
I don't think they tested the Free T3 and Free T4 levels. Free T4 levels are usually .9 - 1.6 and Free T3 are 337-506 (or 3.37 - 5.06). These are pediatric levels - my son's Quest lab ranges. Does your son have gluten issues? Also dairy may be a problem. We worked through all this with my son. He was allergic to gluten, dairy, and eggs. He was toxic in many environmental toxins - including bromide. His 24 hour loading test revealed a bromide level of 45 mgs / L (toxic being higher than 5 mgs / L). His TSH when dx'd hypo was 1.9 and his FT4 was 1.1 and his FT3 was 335 (3.35). He was 7 when dx'd. Chronic constipation, yeast infections, ear infections, short fused / intolerant, did not grow for 2 years, very thin and did eat a lot but was very picky. He had an aversion to meat too. He was low on B12 as well as low iron / ferritin. My daughter was dx'd at 4 yrs old and was also like her brother and similar to your son. Buist, ND HC Confused about 3 y/o son's labs Hi guys! I haven't posted in a while. We got our 3 year old's thyroid panel back and I am confused about something. -His TSH is 1.23 (I've read that anything over 1.5 warrants investigating T3 and T4 which we had done also)-His T4 is 9.4 (reference range of lab is 4.5-12 mcg/dL)-His T3 is what is confusing me, they listed it as 88 ng/dL with no reference range (not that I would trust it anyway) When I looked online for the standard lab ranges I found 80-230 as a reference, which means he is nowhere near the upper 1/3 of the range. We tested his thyroid, because he is VERY moody and screamy, hits a lot and has no patience, plus recently he lost two chunks (about 1 inch around) of hair from the scalp. He's also very small for his age and grows extremely slowly, although he is hungry all of the time and eats well. We've been giving him about 2.2-4.4mg of Lugol's daily for a while now, plus selenium. He can't have vitamin C, because of an oxalate issue though.
Guest guest
Hi ,I am sorry for your son’s problems. How hard it is to watch and deal with. The best tests are the Free T3 and Free T4. Those are the ones that most feel best at the top 1/3 of the range. While the TSH is not good as a stand alone test, it would help to have the ranges. There are different sets of ranges, so you need to get the ranges your lab uses. Same with the T3 results you have. Looking them up online can give you a different range than was actually used by the testing facility. Are you giving him the rest of the supporting nutrients? The selenium is very important, as well as vit C. Please explain why he cannot have it. Are you using whole salt? Vit C is vital for life, and contained in many foods, it would seem impossible and unhealthy to not get any. Guest guest
Thanks , I had a feeling they didn't do the test right. Our doctor asked for free T3 and 4, but the lab screwed up, they also missed another test we were doing for mito markers, UGH! Can these numbers help with anything? I would hate to put my children through that again, they get so worked up over blood work so we tend to try to do as much at once as possible. We are free of SO many foods. He's been GFCFSF and egg-free for years. We are also low oxalate and just began an elimination diet for salicylates, which is actually going fairly well. Do you think the iodine I give him daily is enough and should I add in a little thyroid glandular or do I really need the right testing? > > I don't think they tested the Free T3 and Free T4 levels. Guest guest
Hi Donna, I'm sorry, that was confusing the way I said it, lol. We just don't do supplemental vit C, because he develops oxalate crystals from it (same thing that causes kidney stones and gout). He gets a lot of veggies and fruits that provide vitamin C. But right now, he is on a very limited diet temporarily while we figure out what else he might be reacting to. He lives mainly on meats, veggies and fruit though. No grains, no sugar, nothing artificial, etc. I do give him selenium and we use a lot of Redmond's sea salt all day. The T3 number they gave us has no range listed on the test, oddly. That's why I looked it up. He is in range for the other numbers on the test, but I thought there could be a sub-clinical situation, like myself. My biological dentist noticed that my numbers, although in range, were in line with sub-clinical hypothyroidism. I started the iodine protocol (minus the supplemental vit C as well, for same reason) over a year ago. I've been doing 50mg of iodine and 250mcg of selenium and have recently started to try cutting back on the iodine to see how I feel on a lower dose. When I started my own use of iodine, I began using small amounts with both kids. > > Hi , > I am sorry for your son's problems. Guest guest
I think you really need to know where he is before giving any thyroid glandular. We gave my 4 yr old daughter 6.25 mgs of Iodoral when she was dx'd. Selenium 100 mcgs 3x / week, Vit C and Multi Vitamin. My children hate labs and we have had to repeat them due to lab error. It's really hard I know but sometimes it happens. Can your doctor order a little topical lydicane to help so they don't feel the needle prick? My son almost passed out on one draw because we took 8 tubes. I felt so bad - and then we had to repoke him because it stopped flowing and then we had to go back because they made a mistake. Guest guest
Ok, so no glandular until we repeat labs, grr! I wonder, if insurance is going to give us a hard time on the repeat testing. Do you think the small amount of iodine (2.2-4.4mg a day) and selenium (about 25mg every other day) I am giving are ok? I want to provide these supplements as a preventative, especially considering the situation with Fukushima unfolding. We had 8 vials taken of each child too, and they messed up what was taken, plus missed something completely! I'm so aggravated. One child practically hyperventilates for blood work....then says there was no reason to get so upset afterwards. He leaves bounding through the door dancing. The other is so calm while waiting, freaks when it happens and then has the woe is me crying for a while afterwards, lol. Can you tell how very different they are from each other? hahaha > > > > I don't think they tested the Free T3 and Free T4 levels. Guest guest
If you can prove that they didn't run the tests that were ordered then they should not double bill the insurance company and there will be no issue. I have had to fight this - get the original lab slip from the doctor and send to the lab or the doctors office can fight it for you - and should. Guest guest
I should also add that the low iodine should be OK with that selenium. Selenium is good for detoxing too so if this were my child I may increase it a bit more. As I said I do 100 mcg 3x / wk Buist, ND HC Confused about 3 y/o son's labs> > > > > > > > Hi guys! Guest guest
Ok. I was using body weight, I read somewhere that it should be like 10 mcgs per kg of body weight, does that sound right? He's pretty small, only 31 pounds, so I was sprinkling about 1/5th of a 200 or 250 mcg capsule into his vitamins. I have no problem increasing though. > > > > > > I don't think they tested the Free T3 and Free T4 levels. Free T4 levels are usually .9 - 1.6 and Free T3 are 337-506 (or 3.37 - 5.06). Guest guest
I think my daughter was 45 lbs or so when I started the selenium. I am not as familiar with dosing this with kids as I only know what I did with my children who were a little older and bigger.
