Guest guest
Pregnancy takes its toll on your thyroid as the baby takes thyroid hormone from you for the first 2 tri-mesters. Goiter is very common in pregnancy. How much of the companion nutrients are you taking? Buist, ND HC Persistent Throat pain and cough? Please Help! Hi I am 8mth pregnant. I've been on the iodine protocol since about a month before pregnancy. Just taking 12.5mg of iodoral with all the companions supplements as well.Throughout the pregnancy from quite early on, I have had pain in my throat. It feels like someone is squeezing my throat or windpipe. A bit like a choking feel with pain, tightness. It is hard to describe. I often cough after it to open my throat up again. And is worse after eating. Soothed by cold foods. It has got worse as the pregnancy has gone on. And I initially thought it might be a type of reflux but I don't get any acid in my mouth just the excruciating tight feeling. The obstetrician wanted me to get a throat ultrasound to see if I had a hidden goiter. But then she forgot to order it so it hasn't happened. She thought it could also be a oesophageal spasm. I didn't have it prior to pregnancy as far as I can remember. Has anyone got any insight?? I would really appreciate it.I am having a c section for the birth too and the OB said we needed to find out what it was in case I had to have a General Anaesthetic and they needed to intubate me (put a breathing tube in my throat). She seemed concerned that if there was a problem in my throat this could be difficult.I am hopeful of some answers here...there seems to be SO little said on iodine during pregnancy.Oh I am hypothyroid and currently take 280mg of NTH ...my labs have been pretty good throughout, of course suppress TSH but FT4 approx at 12 and FT3 approx 5.0 for most of the pregnancy. FT3 went a bit high last month so I reduced from 300mg to 280mg. Thanks Christen
Guest guest
I am taking once a day with my 12.5mg iodine 400mg Magnesium Malate, 2000mg Vitamin C, 100mcg (sometimes 200mcg)Selenium. I was also taking Real Salt but stopped recently because I have extreme fluid retention in my legs, feet and ankles and thought less salt might help relieve it, I still salt my food heavily. I also erratically take B2 & B3 and a multi B plus sometimes a B12. I also take iron as I am trying to bring my iron levels back up they are currently at 24 (20-200). I really hope I don't have goiter...I certainly can't see anything but the OB said it can sometimes hide and not be visible. Should I persue that ultrasound scan that she suggested I get for my throat? What should I do if I have goiter...does this mean my baby is not getting enough iodine and thyroid hormone? Thank you very much for answering. Christen > > Pregnancy takes its toll on your thyroid as the baby takes thyroid hormone from you for the first 2 tri-mesters. Goiter is very common in pregnancy. Guest guest
Dear Christen,Finally someone who has exactly the symptom I have while taking iodine, only I have no thyroid! I worry because my throat pain is like a tightness and also my lymph node one one side under the jaw was inflamed. My doc scoped my throat bc I have reflux and found no lumps, polyps pr anything suspicious. I will be following this thread to see what can help us solve this issue.AgnesSent from my iPadOn Mar 20, 2012, at 4:02 PM, " Buist, ND HC" <stephaniebnd@...> wrote: Pregnancy takes its toll on your thyroid as the baby takes thyroid hormone from you for the first 2 tri-mesters. Guest guest
It has been quite some time now and I no longer have all of the emails or research I did on this. But, yes I had symptoms very similar to what you are describing. At the time, I read a study which indicated that the iodine was having an impact on some of the participants' salivary glands and they stopped using it because of that. There was no cough. but I did have a gripping feeling in my throat and under the jaw...in some ways it seemed like swollen glands. It was very frightening to me at the time. Guest guest
Hi Agnes Well that's really odd...having the same pain without a thyroid gland tends to mean it is not the thyroid causing the problem, which could be good news, I guess?? I will let you know what happens if I manage to get an ultrasound for it. It is an incredibly uncomfortable, bordering on painful thing, isn't it! Guest guest
Sounds similar. When I upped my daily to over 100mg, I seem to have this soreness at the back of the throat. Hard time shaking it. Had reflux before but ACV usually takes that out (makes the valve at the top of the stomach close tighter due to increased acid levels). My guess is that it is the iodine (using Lugol's). One thing that you might try is to gargle with some baking soda in water. One teaspoon in a glass and just take enough to gargle with. Don't swallow it. Just gargle and spit it out. You may have to gargle up to 20-30 seconds but you should feel the irritation/burning sensation go away. This works for a while. If you need to do it again, you can since you don't swallow the soda water. It has something to do with the acid released when there is irritation or a burn. I am guessing that is what is happening in the throat. Post nasal drip irritates the throat and the iodine irritates it further or at least that is the way it appears to work for me. Same goes if you get a burn on your skin. Put baking soda paste (mix soda with water to make a paste) and put it on the burn. The burn seems to release acid from the skin (so I am told) and the soda neutralizes the acid and the pain goes away. Haven't tried it yet (I don't go around burning myself on purpose) but it sounds like a great treatment. > > > > > Pregnancy takes its toll on your thyroid as the baby takes thyroid hormone from you for the first 2 tri-mesters. Guest guest
Hi Jaan Thanks for your answer. I am taking 2000mg vitamin C ...but don't think it is slow release, I find if I take more than that I get diarrhoea. Do you have a slow release brand that you can recommend. I usually buy on iherb.com as that is easiest and cheapest for me. I am not in the USA. I am in New Zealand. so currently it is summer here. I don't wear sunscreen and I take a moderate amount of vitamin D3 also. When I looked up goiter or thyroid nodules it did describe this similar pain I am having in my throat. I really hope it is not goiter...well mostly I really hope it doesn't mean adverse effects to my baby. Apparently, because I am having a c section (due to size) my last baby was over 11lbs ..the anaesthetist wants to talk to me about this throat pain in case it is an issue. It is sort of worrying me now. I didn't have it before taking iodine. I am only taking such a small amount at 12.5mg. I have started taking the salt again just incase that was making it worse....although I have horrendous oedema in my legs from the pregnancy and salt is obviously not recommended for that. I don't think I am going to tell the doctors or anaesthetist about the iodine because I am sure I will just get lectured etc. There is no reason they need to know, is there? I seriously will get major anti if I tell them about it. Christen > > 1000 mg of Vitamin C may not be enough.
