Hi Betty,Are you taking the companion nutrients? These are essential to help your body process correctly. You may need to do some other things to help your bowels get working better – extra vit C and magnesium may help. Make sure you are using the daily salt and try salt loading also. The iodine will nourish your body, it just is sometimes hard getting your body to clear out well! Donna in IL, moderator From: iodine [mailto:iodine ] On Behalf Of Betty Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2012 5:08 PMiodine Subject: swithcing track Okay, I've decided to switch track. I tried 3 days of 1/2 iodoral tab. It made my stomach bloat. I decided to try the ashwagandha to strengthen my adrenals first. I was taking 2/day for about 3 weeks and my bowels were so sluggish, I once again am bloated, even after backing off to 1/day. I am not overweight. I usuallly weigh about 125 lbs but have gained a few pounds with this endeavor. I have decided that if I am going to be able to use the iodine at all I will try the liquid Lugols starting at the very lowest dose possible to see if my bowels can handle it. I need to know if I should try the 2% or the 5% . Any advice would be welcome. I do want my hypothyroid to be treated with the iodine. I do have the supplements mentioned. I did use them with the initial try. Thank you very much.Betty

Hi there,I am butting in bc I am going through a lot of side effects while on iodine. I have just seen a homeopathic doctor who asked me to stop the iodine for a short while until we can balance my hormones and cortisol. Betty, I had the bloat and severe digestive problems from being hypo. I have no thyroid and over maybe two years, I felt like food was not moving though my digestive tract. I was severly bloated, felt heavy and looked pregnant. It was a symptom of being hypo. I'm not having that happen to me while I'm on iodine. I do have an array of other symptoms though.AgnesSent from my iPadOn Mar 20, 2012, at 9:48 AM, Donna Iler <Donna@...> wrote:

JMO, but it would be prudent to continue the iodine while balancing the

hormones.

constipation has been my longterm problem and was the original reason i saw the

doctor who checked my thyroid & put me on armour (as well as 25 mg of iodine).

however, the constipation never improved.

lately i have found this website/diet/ group: breaking the vicious

cycle.com, which describes the " specific carbs diet " . it is helping me with

constipation, pain, bloating. although it is a demanding diet, i was desperate.

i only found it because of this iodine group's constant references to detox

pathways -- which sent me out looking one more time, and that was when i found

the specific carbs diet. i can't recommend it too highly. nothing ever ever

helped me, including extra c and extra mag -- though they did ease things, i

would practically have to be near a bathroom all the time if i took enough to

make any difference.

Just curious; do you have any other symptoms of Hypo? Fatigue, muscle aches with

trigger point pain, Plantar fascia (bottom of the foot ) pain, etc.? What I'm

wondering is if you are on the RIGHT dose of armour, to properly TREAT your

Hypothyroidism. It can take a lot of fine tuning, to get it right, and until you

DO, your symptoms will persist. Have you had Total T4, Free T3 and Free T4, AND

Tsh test run? These will also show whether you are 'treating' your Hypo

effectively. Just saying, if you are hypo, and constipation that can't be

addressed with magnesium is a symptom, just taking armour won't solve the

problem; got to get the dose just right. Jim

Linn,Thank you. I will see whether taking half of 12.5 Iodoral will work out better for me and still waiting for Lugols so I can control the dose drop by drop. AgnesSent from my iPadOn Mar 20, 2012, at 3:47 PM, "Linn" <mwm1glm@...> wrote:

Thank you for your responses. Agnes, I am assuming you were able to get relief

from the bloating etc from using the iodine. I have read that the lugols liquid

goes into the stomach, whereas the iodoral is processed in the intestines. This

is the reason I am going with the liquid next. I have got to find a way to have

my body, in particular my digestion, to accept iodine. BTW, I take from

400-600mg of magnesium citrate daily, couldn't live without it. I am grateful to

be a part of such a great group of people.

Betty,My symptoms simply went away after two years. I was sure to exercise, eat well, try to stay as healthy as possible despite my horrible thyroid symptoms. Agnes,

Since you seem to have experienced the same intestinal problems, I am wondering,

what form of iodine worked for you? Which form were you able to tolerate? If

it was lugols, was it 2% or 5%. I am debating which way to go here. I don't

know of anyone, except for those of us here in this group, that are

knowledgeable about iodine therapy. What level did you get to in your iodine

use? You previously mentioned an array of other symptoms. Are these related to

being hypo or associated with the iodine use?

Betty,I have tried Iodoral 12.5 as I wasn't able to increase more due to severe side effects like throat tightness, pain and inflamed lymph under my jaw. I also had increased salivation which is listed in the Iodoral as a side effect. My new doc who ordered blood work so he can put me on natural thyroid hormone told me to stop bc I also started to have spotting, brown discharge, uterine cramps and very tender breasts. He wants to work on my hormones and adrenals first. Yes, all my symptoms along with increased insomnia started with iodine use. I have been unable to go higher than 12.5 Iodoral or the throat symptoms would get much worse.I found a site of a doc in Alabama who treats with iodine and he listed side effects associated with iodine use, some of which are like mine. Increased salivation and throat symptoms are listed as severe enough to stop using iodine as there may be a problem metabolizing it. My hypo symptoms are insomnia, exhaustion, brain fog, horrible memory, exhaustion after exercise, irritability, female problems, dry skin, brittle nails, itchy head, vision disturbances, achy ear. Iodine has helped me with all the symptoms except insomnia and caused me side effects which I have no idea how to handle. I did take all the supplements and did salt loading too. My digestive problems happened a few years ago and no one knew what to do for me. I learned from my research that it was due to being hypo. Mind you, I'm on synthroid for like 12 years and it has done nothing good for me. I'm on thyroid less group if you want to talk more about the thyroid.AgnesSent from my iPadOn Mar 22, 2012, at 5:57 PM, "twelveoaksroad" <twelveoaksroad@...> wrote:

No he isn't that kind of doctor. He is good with the blood work, and he's good

with adjusting my Armour dosage. But the iodine thing, I've never told him about

finding this group. He started me on iodine, but I have been increasing my

iodine on my own. He would be mad.

It's funny. I just wanted to tell the original poster that constipation,

although it may be blamed on hypothyroid, can persist even after increasing your

thyroid function. I really didn't want to start a conversation about my

thyroid.Rather, I have found it is important to tell other people what I have

learned. Constipation can be really misunderstood. The majority of advice people

like to give is the same thing again and again; and if the same thing doesn't

work for you, you need to know where to look for more help. I've been working on

this for years. The Specific Carbs Diet is making a difference, whereas thyroid

work never improved constipation for me.

There are other factors besides thyroid.

thanks

Hi Agnes,My understanding has always been that these are not side effects from the iodine but detox symptoms from the bromine and other toxins leaving your system. Very different scenarios and it would be a shame for others to think of it as side effects when it is just your body cleaning out the crud.

Depending on how toxic you are you have to start VERY slowly or the rate at which the toxins are leaving your body is too severe for your system to handle. Remember the one gentleman on this loop who had to start with 1/10 of a drop of Lugol's and work very slowly up to 1 drop? If he was using 5% Lugol's that would mean he started at 0.625 milligrams of iodine. So you can see that is about 200 times less the amount you were using. My hypo symptoms are insomnia, exhaustion, brain fog, horrible memory, exhaustion after exercise, irritability, female problems, dry skin, brittle nails, itchy head, vision disturbances, achy ear. Iodine has helped me with all the symptoms except insomnia and caused me side effects

Hi Agnes,Your “side effects†are bromide detox. Please reread the guide to supplementing, and especially note the section on detox symptoms. It is not that you are having a problem metabolizing it, but that you are not clearing out the toxins well. Working on liver cleansing/support, will help, making sure you are getting plenty of salt and water to urinate frequently, working on bowels working well, and baths with 1 cup Epsom salt and 1 cup hydrogen peroxide may help you clear them out faster. If the 12.5 is tolerable, stay at that level, as it is helping you. Maybe later as you clear out some of the toxins, you will be able to raise the dose. We also recommend reading Dr. Brownstein’s book, Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It (4th Edition) Donna in IL, moderator Betty, I have tried Iodoral 12.5 as I wasn't able to increase more due to severe side effects like throat tightness, pain and inflamed lymph under my jaw. Dear Donna,Thank you so much for the support and encouragement. I did read all the info on iodine and more but hormonal imbalance as detox symptom is such a broad statement. I am paranoid bc my thyroid removal caused me an array of female problems such as heavy, irregular bleeding, uterine thickening, enlarged uterus, ovarian cysts, painful periods etc. I had two ovarian cyst operations already and thus freaked out when suddenly started spotting brown discharge, had period like camps and sharper pains in the ovarian region. It's great if iodine is cleaning out my female parts but the symptoms are so familiar to what I had before, that it scared me to death. I don't want to have any more female issues and surgeries. I can deal with puffiness, insomnia, rashes etc but please no more female problems. I'm not even sure if I should take 12.5 Iodoral. It may have been you or Kathleen who advised me to try Lugol's drop by drop. I may have to do that. I'm also taking all the supplements and drinking Celtic salt.I forgot to mention that my new doc wants to make sure I don't have Hashi's as he said iodine is not a good treatment in that situation. As I remember, I haven't been checked for it.Thank you again for your help.AgnesSent from my iPadOn Mar 23, 2012, at 9:00 PM, Donna Iler <Donna@...> wrote:

My Dear ,Thank you again for running to my aid. As I wrote in my previous post, I'm terrified of any female problems bc I had so many since my thyroid removal. As I'm writing this, I still have brown discharge coming out and have some cramps here and there.I'm inclined to go with Lugol's at very small doses and see what happens. I'm taking all the supplements and salt.Take care,AgnesSent from my iPadOn Mar 23, 2012, at 7:56 PM, Hidden Jewel <hiddenjewelalaska@...> wrote:

Lugol's sounds like a plan so you can control how much you increase in smaller increments. We are using the Lugols 2% and I like that we can start as low as 2.5mg or lower if needed.

Agnes,

I had those same type of symptoms when I had adenomyosis. Ovarian cysts and

period issues are signs of iodine deficiency. I had some of the same symptoms

when I first started on iodine. I was able to reduce progesterone and then able

to wean off it totally, the iodine helped to balance my hormones. You just need

to find a balance. It sounds like your doc doesn't know much about iodine with

the comment about Hashi's. There are many folks on the list with Hashi's who do

well on iodine. Also be aware that the thyroid issues alone can wreck havoc

with your cycles.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

sluggish, I once again am bloated, even after backing off to 1/day. I am not

overweight. I usuallly weigh about 125 lbs but have gained a few pounds with

this endeavor. I have decided that if I am going to be able to use the iodine at

all I will try the liquid Lugols starting at the very lowest dose possible to

see if my bowels can handle it. I need to know if I should try the 2% or the 5%

.. Any advice would be welcome. I do want my hypothyroid to be treated with the

iodine. I do have the supplements mentioned. I did use them with the initial

try. Thank you very much.

Thank you,Linn. It's encouraging to hear bc I'm so tired of my male problems. I just want to get better.Sent from my iPadOn Mar 24, 2012, at 3:44 PM, "Linn" <mwm1glm@...> wrote:

Agnes,

I had those same type of symptoms when I had adenomyosis. Ovarian cysts and period issues are signs of iodine deficiency. I had some of the same symptoms when I first started on iodine. I was able to reduce progesterone and then able to wean off it totally, the iodine helped to balance my hormones. You just need to find a balance. It sounds like your doc doesn't know much about iodine with the comment about Hashi's. There are many folks on the list with Hashi's who do well on iodine. Also be aware that the thyroid issues alone can wreck havoc with your cycles.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

,Thank you. I plan to start Lugol's one drop. Is that a good way to start?Sent from my iPadOn Mar 24, 2012, at 3:28 PM, Hidden Jewel <hiddenjewelalaska@...> wrote:

Lugol's sounds like a plan so you can control how much you increase in smaller increments. We are using the Lugols 2% and I like that we can start as low as 2.5mg or lower if needed.

My Dear ,Thank you again for running to my aid. As I wrote in my previous post, I'm terrified of any female problems bc I had so many since my thyroid removal. As I'm writing this, I still have brown discharge coming out and have some cramps here and there.

I'm inclined to go with Lugol's at very small doses and see what happens. I'm taking all the supplements and salt.Take care,AgnesSent from my iPad

But that is the level his body could handle as it started cleaning out the bad stuff. So that was the right thing to do.

Just wanted to clarify so no one gets confused. in Alaska

Iodine has helped me with all the symptoms except insomnia and caused me side effects

which I have no idea how to handle.

Agnes,

Since you seem to have experienced the same intestinal problems, I am wondering, what form of iodine worked for you? Which form were you able to tolerate? If it was lugols, was it 2% or 5%. I am debating which way to go here. I don't know of anyone, except for those of us here in this group, that are knowledgeable about iodine therapy. What level did you get to in your iodine use? You previously mentioned an array of other symptoms. Are these related to being hypo or associated with the iodine use?

I totally understand that feeling. I was just about at my wit's end and had a

hysterectomy scheduled. The thing that saved me was since my doc wanted to do a

total hyst, I was going to need to start on hormones. Nosy person that I am, I

started doing a little research to understand what I was in for and learned all

about bio-id hormones and that in turn led me to learning about thyroid and

iodine. Thyroid, iodine and progesterone saved me from having a hyst, cleared

up the female issues and gave me my life back. Good luck!
