Guest guest
We do not have any research to support this. Can you ask where she got her information - actually she is on this group too. I know that it does affect hormones but it is only "resetting" and shifting hormones toward the normal levels. Where many get into issues is if they are using BHrt to artificially increase certain levels. This is why you need to stay on top of testing. Many have healed from BC with Iodine. Dr Derry wrote a book on BC and Iodine. Maybe reading that will help to ease your fears. Buist, ND HC iodine increases progesterone ? Guest guest
Hi Steph, I have a somewhat related question- hopefully not off the wall. Just a little background: I had an explosion of Candida in August, then a smaller one in Jan. In both cases it affected my mag and iron levels and caused significant hair loss. I was able to mitigate some of the " damage " by increasing my progesterone (with my docs knowledge). I went from 50 to 75 to 100mg/day. Testing said I was still in normal range. About 2 weeks ago I increased my Lugol's to 50mg and felt more energy. In the last few days I have seen a big increase in my hair loss again. My hair does not have a chance to fully recover and it gets hit again. I have changed my diet to more of a higher fat, low carb to not give the fungus anything to feast on. I went to a free cholestrol screening today and my total cholestrol dropped to 137 (from 180 at end of yr). I remember reading that we need cholestrol to make hormones. My question: Could the lower cholestrol be lowering my progesterone (which for some reason my hair likes). Should I lower the amount of lugol's? Thanks so much and God Bless you, Luci > > We do not have any research to support this. Can you ask where she got her information - actually she is on this group too. Guest guest
it is not your hair that likes progesterone, but the thyroid.estrogen blocks the thyroid and progesterone helps.low thyroid and low ferritine cause hair loss On Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 6:27 PM, luci535 <lutenenbaum@...> wrote: Hi Steph, I have a somewhat related question- hopefully not off thewall. Guest guest
I have attached the hormone cascade sheet so you can see what causes what. It would be difficult for me to say what the issue is because low thyroid, low iron / ferritin, low estrogen and low progesterone can all contribute to hair loss. Also implicated in hair loss is a detoxification. I wish I could give you more guidance but I really can't w/o a bigger picture. Sometimes you just have to play with your dosing to find the sweet spot for your body. Guest guest
Steph thanks so much - you are a jewel! I looked back to my last labs my LDL was 97, today it was 64. So, I think I need to experiment with raising the progesterone again! Last question: I know my changing my diet has contributed to the decrease in cholestrol but could the increase in iodine have also contributed (to the cholestrol decrease)? Guest guest
Hi Steph, I just had another thought. I have been on Diflucan 100mg/ twice a day to help kill the candida. I am wondering if this is also contributing to the decrease in my cholestrol? I remember reading that statin drugs also have an anti-fungal property and at the time there were theories floating that the " anti-fungalness " is what helps lower cholestrol. Now, add to that the increased iodine? I was just wondering. Thanks so much!!! God Bless You, Luci > > > > > > We do not have any research to support this. Guest guest
I found quite a few places on the internet listing raised cholesterol as a sign of iodine deficiency. It's one of the reasons I started looking into it. I assumed that if you fixed the deficiency it MIGHT alter the cholesterol. No guarantee of course, but that was my thinking. I plan on getting it tested at some point, but it's early days yet. Obviously I'll report back my results. > > > > > > We do not have any research to support this. Guest guest
Does high or low cortisol also potentially cause hair loss? Can iodine cause high or low cortisol? How about too much/too high of a dose of Armour thyroid? Would the heat of summer push the adrenals or thyroid? I'm trying to figure out why when the heat of summer arrives every year that I go either hyperthyroid or high cortisol (I test with over range for BOTH Total T3 and Free T3 when the heat comes, while the rest of the year these levels are normal mid-range). I do take 45mg of Armour but can't take it when the outside temps get to around 85 degrees........and taking iodine makes it worse too. I saliva test during the episodes as well and my cortisol levels are HIGH for all 4 times of day that saliva was sampled. IN the winter my saliva cortisol is low or normal.........so very confounding~! My docs, and I've seen a few, have NO answer for me - as they don't understand how /why the heat would bother my hormones so much. I think they've given up on me. They all tell me that I should be easily able to take Armour at the same dose year round....but I can't~! I also lose weight rapidly, lose my appetite, have diarrhea, have insomnia, and at times tremors plus extreme fatigue during these episodes. Am I simply going hyperthyroid due to the heat? The docs all say "NO" but then I've read several books and on websites that talk about seasonal dosing of thyroid meds in extreme climates, which we certainly have here in AZ. But I wonder if I need to take Armour at all, but need iodine instead due to the fact that I can't tolerate it very well. I've tried Synthroid, Naturethroid as well - the Naturethroid really sends me for a loop - even 1/8 grain sets me into a tailspin during summer....yikes~! By the way, this has only started happening since going ON a small dose of Armour thyroid some 8 years ago - I do not have Hashimoto's (have had over 30 blood tests to check for antibodies, never there) and my TSH has been to a high of 4.34 unmedicated, ferritin always runs low and I feel fatigued/ worn out alot. The main issues are horrid and predictable hair loss and rapid weight loss/diarrhea during these hyper times - and I have to 100% go OFF of the Armour for the entire summer. It takes abouty 5-6 weeks for the hyper symptoms to slowly abate.....even if I do OFF of the Armour early in Spring (last year I went off Armour on March 31st and yet the hyper episode still happened when the heat arrived in June). So I"m wondering if I simply need to try iodine only, and stay off Armour? I've tried Cortef and Isocort as well, still not helpful to stop these episodes. Any comments? Thank you - hopefully I posted this correctly this time, sorry if not~! LIBBY
Guest guest
Yes - antifungal drugs will lower your cholesterol and FAST! I took 6 weeks of 200 mg/day Nizoral last summer and my cholesterol went down from 256 to 190, triglycerides from 136 to 62 - truly amazing~ I did not diet or exercise differently...... Guest guest
High cholesterol can be caused by low adrenals as cholesterol is a precursor to those hormones. When the adrenals are low the body calls for more cholesterol. How iodine plays into that picture I don't know yet. in AlaskaOn Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 6:56 PM, Jo <joannehampton@...> wrote: I found quite a few places on the internet listing raised cholesterol as a sign of iodine deficiency. Guest guest
The diet changes were no starchy veggies. no fruit. no more brown rice, or brown rice pasta. no grains. of course no sugar/cakes. more meat, eggs, seseme seed butter. lots of green veggies. I had a " setback " the day after I ate 5 stalks of carrots. Last night I increased my progesterone from 100mg to 200mg and the number of hairs in the shower basin was noteably less. Guest guest
Hi Steph, I would like to ask another question still related to our discussion of hair loss and candida. This time for my 21 yr old daughter who has Hashi's, and 1/2 a thryoid (due to PTC). She takes 150 mgs Iodoral plus all the companion nutrients. She first lost a lot of her hair summer of 2010 when she was first diagnosed hypo and put on synthroid. In a matter of 2 months we switched to natural dessicated. She continued to lose hair and her texture changed from silky to frizzy. In all of this she was battling candida as well. But since Dec 2010 she has been following a gluten free, anti-fungal diet. About 3 weeks ago she had a candida " explosion " . She went back on Diflucan. 100mg/ twice a day for 14 days. On the fifth day she started Nystatin, 1M units/ 3 times a day. At about day 12 of the Diflucan her hair started to fall out big time and has continued. It really breaks my heart to know she has so little hair left and it has turned back to frizzy again. Based on my experience with Diflucan, I can see my LDL dropped significantly which would impact her hormones a lot if the same is true for her. She never had high cholestrol, so she is starting at a low base. So to my question... would it make sense to get her some OTC progesterone cream to try? I know for me that helps to slow down the loss a bit. But will that negatively impact her because she is fighting papillary carcinoma? I don't want her to decrease her iodine since her body needs to fight the cancer... but if you think she should for a brief time, please let me know. I so appreciate your thoughts and help, God Bless, Luci > > > > > > > > We do not have any research to support this. Guest guest
I think you need to get some labs done on her before you add anything blindly. Hair loss can be related to a lot of nutritional deficiencies. What kind of food is she eating. Is it a whole food diet with good oils and fats? Hair tends to be an indication of your body's over all health status and nutrition level. If your doctor won't order your labs www.healthcheckusa.com will allow you to order your own.
