Reaction to iodine

I have been getting the iodine group messages for about a year now. I have a

rather complicated question about my use of iodine. I am not currently taking

iodine, but I was at one time. Then and every time since then if I try to take

iodine I have weird neurological reactions.

I was seeing an alternative health practitioner beginning around 2009- he was

treating me for some adrenal problems. A year later my health was improved but

not completely. I stopped going to him for a few months. We found out we had

some major mold issues in our house and moved out. I went back to him. and he

said he was beginning to use iodine with most of his patients and he thought

that it might be beneficial to see if that therapy would help me. I did the

iodine loading test, but I question the results because I messed up the first

day and then did it again the next day.

Anyway, he thought the results showed I could use iodine therapy. I began

with iodomere. After a few days I had improved energy and stamina, had lost

weight easily, and continued taking it with good results. I started getting

headaches though everyday and they got really bad. When I went for my follow up

I found out that I did not understand the initial instructions and had not been

doing the sea salt every day. I had not heard of the sea salt flush.

At that point he switched me to iodoral because he thought I may have not

been tolerating the iodomere very well. I started with 1/4 of a pill per day.

I was doing terrific in the weeks following!! My cystic acne cleared up,

allergies were better, great stamina, ate whatever I wanted and lost weight,

felt mentally better, happier, etc. I was also beginning to go back to dance

class regularly- and that may have been part of the problem leading to the very

scary experience I had in the months following, because the dancing was a

strenuous exercise I just jumped into without working up to it and I lost a lot

of weight very fast (like 10 pounds in a few days.) I would sweat profusely for

2 hours at a time about 3x per week. I am thinking it led to a loss of

minerals.

What happened was about on week 3 of the iodoral, I began to notice that both

arms did not work properly. Meaning, my large muscle control worked okay, but

my fine motor control was having problems. I would reach for a pencil or the

refrigerator door and have difficulty getting my arm or hand to the right

position. I was obligated at that point to dance in a show so I had to continue

going to rehearsals. Even after I stopped the iodine the problem did not

improve. At rehearsal, I could use my arms to dance but the muscles fatigued

easily. But I went to put on my point shoes and I could not handle the ribbons

easily. It was very scary and I began to be worried something was seriously

wrong.

I went to my doctor, my regular physician, thinking I had a mineral imbalance

of some kind. They did and elecrolyte panel and some other tests that all came

back normal. My doctor thought I just had a sensitivity to the iodine I had

been on and that my body would recover in a few weeks. He said 4 weeks and I

should be okay. After 5 weeks I was better with fine motor control but my arm

muscles were still not okay, the muscles were very fatigued and weak. I went

back in and he did another battery of tests- including myesthenia gravis and

autoimmune tests, thyroid... I don't remember what all but he was digging as

deep as he could to get an answer at that time with the available blood tests.

All this time my alternative practioner said he really had no idea what was

wrong and wanted to do more research before making any recommendations. After 3

months, he emailed me and asked me to come in at no charge. He thought I had a

mineral imbalance due to my body detoxing very fast. That is what I had thought

all along but I was scared to take anything because nobody could tell me what

was out of balance- I thought I might screw things up more by taking the wrong

thing. I started taking calcium magnesium right away, and that very day I

started to improve, and then got a little better every day afterwards. He also

did a heavy metals hair test that showed no excess of heavy metals except

bismuth, low mag/ calcium, and it showed over normal range of iodine ( which he

had some explanation for why that was ok.)

It has been about 10 months since then and I am a lot better but I feel that

I need a lot of calcium/ magnesium supplementation or my arm muscles feel a

little weak. My fine motor control has been absolutely normal.

Whenever I attempt taking the tiniest amount of iodoral now I get the energy

improvement/ clarity, but I am scared to take it more than one day at a time.

Last time I got a migraine headache the day after. Sometimes I might think my

arms feel a little weird but maybe I am being paranoid.

My body indicates the iodine is beneficial in many ways but something went

wrong during the process. I think it also was kicking bromide into my system

that my body was having trouble eliminating. I think I am having some digestive

and eliminative issues now.

I really want to try the iodine therapy again but I am scared to. I wish I

had some better answers about what happened to me. Any suggestions?
