Guest guest
Barbara, I did a google search on levothyroxine and breast cancer and there is sort of link, but not caused by the meds as far as I could see. If you are short of iodine (the uk has iodine depleted soils) then the thyroid can grow goiters and nodules in an attempt to make itself larger..... the thyroid is the largest user of iodine although some of it goes to breast tissue. What iodine does, is it causes cells to die when they are supposed to (apoptosis I think it's called). If the cells don't die then they keep multiplying and growing (like cancer cells).... So the link is that if your hypothyroidism is caused by lack of iodine then this same lack of iodine lets cells live too long..... This isn't by any means the whole story, but worth thinking about..... x > > is there more of a link with NDT and cancer or synthetic T4/T3 and breast cancer. is a person with a family history more likely to have problems with any thyroid hormone? >
