Delhi scientist claims to invent instrument-free AIDS test

PTI. The Hindustan Times. 7th January 2002 Lucknow, January 6

A Delhi-based scientist on Sunday claimed to have developed instrument free

rapid test for diagnosing AIDS. Naked Eye Visibile Agglutation (NEVA) detects

the disease from the blood and serum or plasma are not required, Prof. Vijay

Kumar Chowdhry told the Indian Science Congress (ISC), in session, here.

The test, which uses monovalent anti-RBC antigen, does not agglutate with

the normal RBCs but detects the infected cells from the blood sample which

is done on a simple slide, Dr Chowdhry said.

The test can be done in any remote area as no instrument or lab is required

after collecting the blood sample, he said. The technology has been funded

and supported by the Department of Biotechnology.
