HI

My GP has just phoned me with results. Stools OK, but I was amazed that he had

the results of my Thyroid as I only had tests yesterday. The TSH was very low,

but I reminded him that last time I had left of T3 for 24hours, but that I had

forgot to do that this time and had taken T3 on the morning of the test so the

TSH would be low.

However he says that I need to take T4, and to start at 50mcg.This must be why

my weight has gone up.

At one time it took 10days to get the result of ones thyroid tests, so things

must be improving for the next day.

TSH is not affected that quickly Kathleen. If you stopped taking

your T3 the day before you had your blood drawn, it would make little to no

difference to your TSH. We need to know what your free T4 result was so we know

the reason why your GP has recommended you start taking 50mcgs levothyroxine. Ask

your GP to let you have the results for TSH, free T4 and free T3 together with

the reference range for each of the tests done and we can help with their interpretation.

HI SHEILA

I do not think he did the free t3 only TSH and FREE T4.

Will ask for a copy of results next week, as I also have to push them about my

missing records that they have been left to search my records for.

Should also get a response from my complaints procedure.

I also went to BOOTS for my prescription, and as they only had ELTROXIN which is

not the T4 I usually have they are going to try and get some in for me.

It is my inclination to increase it gradually at 25mcg not 50mcg, and to take T4

at night.

With this blood test I had taken T3 on the morning of the test, so surely my TSH

would be low, but what effect does it have on T4.

With my last thyroid test only TSH was done and not FREE T4.

I have some more test results to come A FULL BLOOD COUNT.

As mentioned

previously Kathleen, TSH can take a long time to move either up or down, sometimes

weeks so it would make no difference to your TSH whether or not you had taken

your T4 or T3 on the morning you had your blood drawn. This is the same for

both T4 and T3 medication. Problem is that most doctors are doing everything

they can to save money and believe that TSH is the only test that matters, but

it is not. You need to know where your free T3 and free T4 levels lie in the

blood when you are taking both of these thyroid hormones.

Thanks Sheila, will arrange to get my FREE T3 tested where I got it done before,

but have only started T4 at 25mcg not 50mcg until I have my FREE T3 tested.

On the 7/10/2011 TSH was 3.3mu/L, but that was the only thyroid test he did. The

swelling of the feet and ankles indicates something is wrong and the fact that

my weight increased on lowering Prednisolone and increasing T3 slightly. Surely

this should not have increased my weight.

I had problems with swelling feet when I was first put on T4 and was told then

that I was on too much T4 and it was lowered and the swelling subsided.

Will get the results on paper next week, as my TSH is altering quickly.

My GP once referred to the TSH as the whip that kicks the donkey (one's thyroid)

to produce more T4,so this I cannot understand as it is clear that my TSH is

not struggling with a whip to produce T4, but I am not sure how T3 fits in with

this.
