Guest guest
Hi, my adult daughter, who is under Dr.Peatfield, has finally managed to more or less get the upper hand with her pain and acne by sorting first her adrenals and then gradually increasing her T3. She was also taking about one grain of NDT Thiroyd from Thailand. Under Dr. Peatfields direction she has tried to replace the NDT completely with T3 but as soon as she cut out the NDT she started getting pain so she feels that in some way it helps with the pain. She wants to cut out the NDT because she says that it causes her to have very loose stools which she finds unpleasant. She says that she also had loose stools on Armour. She has tried taking the Thiroyd sublingually but it still gives her loose stools. I take Thiroyd too and I have no problems with it. Does anybody else have this sort of problem with NDT or has anybody got any suggestions? I feel that for the time being it would be better to put up with the loose stools rather than have a return of pain and acne.(she says she has got a couple of spots returned). She came off her last NDT a week ago after seeing Dr Peatfield and then replaced it with T3 after a few days but the day after she came off her NDT she started getting niggling pains which the extra T3 didn't make disappear. The only improvement with no NDT was a normal bowel movement. Any suggestions would be much appreciated....Val

For me it works a treat – but we are all different. I do not doubt that your daughter experiences things as you say, but I have no logical explanation for it. If anything, I would have thought that taking a T3-only medication would give greater cause for loose stools than a combination of T4 and T3 (like Thiroyd). It is the T3 that speeds up the metabolism (which can cause loose stools) and it is often the T4 that causes aches and pains (if it pools and does not get utilized properly). Why your daughter experiences it the other way round, I don't know..... but I am wondering about your daughter's mineral and vitamin levels. If she were low in any of the following – Ferritin, Magnesium, Folate, Zinc Copper, Vit B12 or Vit D3 – then the thyroid hormone would not get utilized properly, and if the Thiroyd went through the body basically unused, then that could cause diarrhoea. It still would not explain why she gets pains on T3, but our bodies are complicated machines. I would look closely into the possibility of D3 deficiency or iron deficiency, ideally have all of the above minerals and vitamins tested. It needs a bit of persuading, but in principle they can all be done on NHS.... although quite a number of doctors might tell you otherwise, particularly with the current shortage of NHS monies. If nothing else, ask your daughter to try at least for ferritin and D3 to be checked. With best wishes,

Actually all vitamins and mineral levels are very good. She has been working at it for a long time and they are at the top of the ranges. Just over a week ago she was saying that she feels absolutely super and the best she has felt in more than 4 years. Then she stopped the last bit of NDT she was taking and started getting some pain again which was not relieved by taking more T3. We have now decided that perhaps she would be better to take the T3 in more doses to give less work to the adrenals that were in a bad way a year ago but according to doctor Peatfield, are much much better now. Guest guest
Perhaps it is just a small amount of thyroxine (T4) she needs and not a replacement with T4, T3, T2, T1 plus calcitonin in. Many who are taking T3 feel better with say 25mcgs levothyroxine. Is to his something she might want to consider Val. Luv - Sheila Does anybody else have this sort of problem with NDT or has anybody got any suggestions? Guest guest
Thank you Sheila, she is going to try spreading her T3 out into more doses but failing that then she thinks she would like to try some thyroxine 25mcgs as you suggest. Will let you know how we get on. cheers.... > > Perhaps it is just a small amount of thyroxine (T4) she needs and not a > replacement with T4, T3, T2, T1 plus calcitonin in. Guest guest
Could she be low in Iron, if nothing else, Iron supplementation will bind her up. Alternatively could she be taking a bit too much Vitamin C. When she shifts to T3 her body gets into gear and uses the VitC and she gets loose stools. 2 > Does anybody else have this sort of problem with NDT or has anybody got any suggestions? Guest guest
Hi 2, actually her ferritin is just above top of range and she tried cutting out the Vit C for a few days and it made no difference. She has decided to go back to exactly what she was taking in T3 and NDT when she felt super and put up with the loose stools till she gets back from holiday when she will think again about what to do. Probably she will try 25mcg T4 instead of the NDT but for now the most important thing is to return to her pain/acne free state and put up with the loose stools. > > Could she be low in Iron, if nothing else, Iron supplementation will bind her up. > Alternatively could she be taking a bit too much Vitamin C. Guest guest
Many people are very constipated because of their hypothyroid state i.e. slow metabolism. Once they start any form of T3, this starts to make things work, and in your daughters case, it could be making her bowels work so hopefully, this 'dire rear' will soon settle if she can put up with it for the time being until her body gets settled with this new treatment regime.
