Guest guest
I need to supplement B12 and iron but when I do, I feel awful - thumping sick headache that pain killers don`t relieve. I bought a slow release capsule that contains :- Iron - 17 mg Zinc - 12 mg Copper - 2000 ug Folacin - 400 ug Vit N12 - 10 ug Vit B6 - 5mg These only seem small amounts compared to what people on this forum recommend to take daily, so I`m wondering why I`m suffering side affects of an overdose of iron. Can anyone advise? Jane
Guest guest
Obviously because your body probably has more than enough of those things already - you should only supplement anything if your test results say you are deficient thyroid treatment From: cos2eggs@...Date: Tue, 24 Jan 2012 13:11:57 +0000Subject: Why would Iron & B12 supplement cause headache & nausea I need to supplement B12 and iron but when I do, I feel awful - thumping sick headache that pain killers don`t relieve.I bought a slow release capsule that contains :-Iron - 17 mgZinc - 12 mgCopper - 2000 ugFolacin - 400 ugVit N12 - 10 ugVit B6 - 5mgThese only seem small amounts compared to what people on this forum recommend to take daily, so I`m wondering why I`m suffering side affects of an overdose of iron. Can anyone advise?Jane
Guest guest
You should not be taking supplements for mineral and vitamins unless you have been tested and these show low - otherwise, you are likely to get the symptoms you are complaining of. If you are B12 deficient, then you take B12 sublingual tablets only etc. and the same with any other deficiencies. You should however, take any form of iron and calcium at least 4 hours away from thyroid hormone. This is often a case of 'more is not best'. Some minerals and vitamins also are OK to take with food, where others are not. What other supplements are you taking Jane? When I supplemented iron after being very low I had some headaches for the first week or two and then they stopped. I was talking a lot of iron but then I was very low in the first place Nick
Guest guest
Hi Sheila - I was tested and although GP said normal, I believe they are low :- 7/11/11 Serum Vit B12 - 348 (130-800) Serum folate - 10 (3-17) Serum Ferritin - 20 (12-250) I know any iron supplement should be taken after a meal and did so. The other supplements I`m taking are 1 x NutriAdrenoMax with my breakfast and have recently started taking Betain with meals cos of worsening gut problems. I`ve recently reduced my Levo down to 50mcgs from 75 as I have started introducing Cynomel at 25mcgs (both taken in morning). > > You should not be taking supplements for mineral and vitamins unless you have been tested and these show low . Guest guest
> > > " Obviously because your body probably has more than enough of those things already " I think thats a bit simplistic? I had problems with nausea when taking Adrenomax and a certain brand of a multi B vitamin. When I switched brands to a different Multi B I was fine. I had tests done to show what I was low in an supplemented accordingly. I also struggled with many different types of iron supplements that caused me nausea, until I found one that I can tolerate. I also had problems with nausea when taking T3. I wondered if my problem was intolerance to the presence of dairy/gluten in some supplements as I usually avoid these foods. I also found out I have anti smooth muscle antibodies and I wonder if this is having some impact with the smooth muscles in the stomach causing nausea? Just a thought I havent investigated properly yet. So Jane, if you are having nausea I would switch brands and see if that helps? Good luck. x
Guest guest
Yes, the vitamin B12 and Ferritin are indeed very low - but what do our doctors know??? It is essential that vitamin B12 is right at the top of the reference range, so it should be at least 700 and above. You would benefit with a course of B12 injections. Also, your ferritin (stored iron) is far, far too low and should be above 90 so you need some form of elemental iron to raise this level up as quickly as possible. Talk to your GP about this, and if he is not prepared to do anything, then ask for a referral to an endocrinologist or better still, haematologist as your GP obviously knows little about medicine. Check out the attached document, print it off and take it to show your doctor to show that low levels of any of these stop thyroid hormone from being utilised at the cellular level. Iron supplements should be taken at least four hours away from thyroid extract. Sheila Serum Vit B12 - 348 (130-800) Serum folate - 10 (3-17) Serum Ferritin - 20 (12-250) 1 of 1 File(s) MINERALS AND VIT.
