Guest guest
Hello Margaret Welcome to the forum! Are you self treating because you have not been able to get well with the NHS? What is your current treatment? > I am looking at the various self treatment options and would like to know what is the differnce between 'Thyroid Gland Extract' i.e. Nutri and 'Dessicated Thyroid Extract'? > > I see from the Nutri web site that the Nutri Thyroid contains thyroid extract but it also states that it is hormone free. Is this a contradiction? The nutri thyroid is supposed to have had all of the hormones processed out of it,so it contains just the nutrients to support your thyroid. However, NDT does contain all of the various thyroid hormones, and at standardised doses - so you know that each tablet should contain the same amount of thyroid. There is some suspicion that some brands of thyroid gland extract do have active hormones in them (like T3), such as Biotics research GTA Forte. http://thyroid.about.com/b/2009/08/18/thyroid-patients-survive-shortage-natural-\ desiccated-thyroid-drugs.htm " Also, Biotics Research has a glandular thyroid called GTA Forte*. It does not contain T4 but does contain T3 and all the other glandular constituents. They may also be a source for the time-being for those needing the glandulars. " http://curezone.com/forums/am.asp?i=1028048 - - some people do well on them. Obviously, this isn't the nutri brand but just using it as an example You can buy GTA Forte in this country from www.revital.co.uk but they do ask for a named practitioner (funny though, as it is not a prescription item, nor are they a pharmacy - i think they do this just to cover themselves). There's a few different strenghts of it. So, NDT definitely does contain thyroid hormones and at standardised doses. Thyroid extract isn't supposed to contain any thyroid hormones and they are supposed to have been processed out of them, but I wonder if very small amounts do remain. Guest guest
Hi Margaret, it is believed that there is still some T4 and T3 in the Nutri Thyroid but they advertise this as being advertised as hormone free. Not sure that it is even measured to see what amount of thyroid hormone might still be lucking there or not. However, the Nutri Thyroid is recommended for those starting out on thyroid replacement as it contains many specific minerals and vitamins the thyroid gland needs and it helps boost thyroid function. However, if you are still suffering symptoms after starting Nutri Thyroid, this is an indication you might be better off starting on the specific thyroid hormones you need, i.e. levothyroxine (T4)-only, T4 and T3 in combination or natural thyroid extract, as this contains all the thyroid hormones i.e. T4,T3, T2, T1 plus calcitonin. Luv - Sheila Hi I am new to this post and am at present trying to find my way around all of the information. I have been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and have Hashimotos. I have backed up the NHS test with others from Genova. I will post later about the results.
