Hi,

I writing this for my sister who is 14 wks pregnant with first baby.

She took years to get pregnant and had very early miscarriage few months ago.

She thinks poss due to her hypothyroidism.

She is always fine on dose of 75mcg thyroxine and this suits her despite her

very over anxious gp who often makes her lower this. Very often she does listen

to him and slowley feels I'll, then, I remind her, and she raises again to 75!

When she got pregnant she herself raised to 100mg thyroxine and it helped. I

think the crucial time for a baby is first trimester and after they do produce

their own thyroid hormones??? So perhaps she doesn't need to worry so much?

But, currently her levels are not right in bloods and she has been told to lower

to 75 again. Her t4 was high at 26. (uk ref range) and tsh 0.05. They won't test

anything else and tbh my sister will inky take thyroxine anyway.

She did not take meds on day of test, but actually they didn't vary much from

time before anyway. I know t4 is too high but I don't know if this shoukd be too

much if a worry? Bloods were done about 11 weeks so I wonders if pregnancy can

makes results look high??

Basically, after a week of lowering back to 75 thyroxine she is panicking as

feeling very dizzy and faint and thinks it could be the drop in thyroid. No docs

really know and she has to wait a few wks to see an rnfo who also I'd likely

rubbish.

She just wants to keep the baby safe but doesn't know what to do. I suggested

doing 75 one day and 100 next - do drop wasn't so severe, but her t4 is over

range so I don't know????

Any help asap appreciated!

Thankyou

carlt x

I think your sister was right to raise her dose early on :) and you are right

that there should be less worry now she's passed 12 weeks, but your sister needs

to feel well and take the dose she needs. If she was feeling ill on 100mcg and

it was tested as high then ok, drop back a little - but was she feeling ill? It

sounds like she is now she's dropped back which would suggest she needs a bit

more than 75mcg (your suggestion sounded good to me).

The other thing to consider is your sister's iron level, was that ok? Iron

levels can drop quite a bit in pregnancy and gives similar feelings of

dizziness. If your sister is worried though she should ring her antenatal clinic

and they should arrange an appointment with the endo asap.

Good luck to your sister :)

Cat.
