Guest guest
Someone like to respond to this? " It might be interesting for you to see what we do in Canada for comparison. Being open minded, it's interesting to see what the U.S. does and it's rationale for it and what Canada does. We have very different political agendas to be sure and it's interesting to hear both viewpoints. At this time, most provinces immunize 2mo, 4mo, 6mo, 18mo olds with DaPT-Hib vaccine (Connaught Labs), 4-6 yr. olds with DaPT, and 12-14 yr. old with Td. Adults get a Td booster every 10 years (after 5-8 years if they have a dirty injury). MMR vaccine is given at 1 yr. of age and MR is given as a booster at Grade 5 or 6 with the Hep B. MR is also being given to all 18 month olds so that eventually we can stop giving it at Grade 5/6 once they catch up. Hep B is not routinely given to newborns. Only those at high risk or living with family members who are positive for Hep B. Hep B series is given to Grade 5-6 students across the country. Influenza and Pneumococcal vaccine is given to high risk clients only. We are not supporting chickenpox vaccine at this time. All " routine " vaccines are given free of charge. Immunization, in Canada, is a parent's choice for the most part except for on " religious grounds " which can't be used as a convenient excuse, it has to be valid, they can be exempted. Ontario does require kids to be fully immunized before school entry, although most of the other provinces do not require it. Many government run daycare centres also require kids to be up-to-date with vaccinations. The point I'm making is that Canada doesn't just jump on the bandwagon because a vaccine is available. A lot of thought goes into what our country feels is really needed for vaccine to prevent serious complications from disease. Although chickenpox can be serious, we are looking at the data to support/refute the risk/benefit of the vaccination program. So it is unknown at this time whether we will be giving this routinely in the future. Guest guest
Even though we do have a bit more freedom here in Canada, one thing we do have in common with US is fear mongering and propaganda. With regards to the flu shot, every fall and winter there are lots of ads for the shot, with the requisite warning about horrible consequences for those who don't get it. Everybody I know who gets the shot comes down with the flu shortly after. At my partner's workplace everyone rushes out gladly every year to get the shot. He's the only one in the office who stays healthy all winter. Shoppers Drug Mart, our biggest drug store chain, has frequent flu shot clinics, where they give them for free to people " at risk " like seniors. And I just heard recently that the government is thinking about makng all flu shots free for everyone soon. Horray! I guess the pharm companies put pressure on them to make sure more people are getting them. I never got any during 12-14 or boosters for tb although I remember some shots being given at school, they were not mandatory. I don't know of any adults that get boosters every 10 years! Immunization, in Canada, is a parent's choice for the most part except for on "religious grounds" which can't be used as a convenient excuse, it has to be valid, they can be exempted. You are asked to provide immunization records when registering, but what they don't advertise is that you can be excepted based on religion or philosophical reasons. The Ontario Ministry of Health website has this form on their website - I don't have the link, but I have seen it. from Ontario

Guest guest
" Even though we do have a bit more freedom here in Canada, one thing we do have in common with US is fear mongering and propaganda " Here's a perfect example...the woman who sits next to me in a training class at work was reading Parents magazine, I saw a picture of a giant duck and asked her if she would mind tearing it out, since my 17 mo old son is currently fascinated with ducks. She did, and said, " but he has a tear in his eye " . Sure enough, one big tear coming from his eye, and below, and ad about the horrors of CHICKENPOX, sponsered of course by Merck. Here's the ad... SADLY, ABOUT 7,400 KIDS END UP IN THE HOSPITAL EACH YEAR BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS DUE TO CHICKENPOX. 1* And tragically, about forty children lose their lives.2 Help protect your child against chickenpox. Guest guest
out of 300 million people in the country thats a very small % (since they like to use %)of the population in general. also, how many children are hospitalized and/or die every year due to a complication from a prescription (or over the counter even) medication they were supposed to be taking (not accidental overdoses)? i'll go hunting unless someone else knows, and i won't be suprised someone does ;-) *smile* chris > SADLY, ABOUT 7,400 KIDS END UP IN THE HOSPITAL EACH YEAR BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS > DUE TO CHICKENPOX. 1* > > And tragically, about forty children lose their lives.
