Guest guest
Jane, I would make sure that you tell your endocrinologist that you are aware the average dose for those with symptoms of hypothyroidism is around 125 to 150mcgs daily. I would concentrate on the symptoms you still suffer, and not what the 25 mcgs has removed so he is more likely to suggest an increase, if that is what you feel is needed. You should also ask for your levels of iron, transferrin saturation%, ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc to be tested to see if any of these are low in the range, because if they are, no amount of thyroid hormone is able to be fully utilised in the cells, and you will continue to suffer symptoms. When these results come back, you need to get them with the reference range and post them here on the forum so we can help with their interpretation. Be sure to tell your endocrinologist about the members of your family who have a thyroid or autoimmune disease and if you have not been tested, ask if you can be tested to see whether you have antibodies to your thyroid (Hashimoto's disease). This is a cause of your hypothyroidism but treatment remains the same for all forms of hypothyroidism. If you have one autoimmune disease you could have others. Thyroid antibodies see your thyroid gland as public enemy number one and set about its gradual destruction - so you could go through phases of feeling pretty good and pretty bad, depending upon the activity of the antibodies at any given time. Your thyroid levels whilst in India are amazing. Your Free T3 is right at the top of the reference range, free T4 is very near to the top and your TSH should be 1.0 and not 3.400. This is a strange result, Usual causes for such results could be caused through the taking of specific drugs, e.g. heparin, amiodarone - anti-T3 antibodies: anti-TSH antibodies; familial dysalbuminaemica hyperthyroxinaemia (FDH); thyroxine replacement therapy (including non-compliance; non-thyroidal illness; acute psychiatric disorders; TSH secreting pituitary tumour or resistance to thyroid hormone. I got these from 'Funny Thyroid Function Test Results' http://www.bioscilibrary.com/resource/summerschool/2006/ss06/ss06_gur.htm Luv - Sheila I'm worried he'll say my results are where he wants them and leave me on a 25 mg dose. How do I convince him otherwise? I've been on this dose for nearly two months now and can describe how much clearer my thinking is. I feel as though the fluffy haze behind my eyes has gone. It's fantastic. I still have a low temperature, hair loss, cold feet and lethargy with no drive etc so would not be happy staying on the lower dose. T3 1.850 ng/ml ref range 0.520-1.850 T4 11.200 (micro symbol)gm/dl ref range 4.800-11.600 TSH 3.400 (micro symbol)lU/ml ref range 0.390-6.
Guest guest
thank you Sheila for such a comprehensive reply. I will have to look a few things up now. I've been checked in the past for thyroid antibodies when my tsh was about 13 and the result was negative. I posted my hair analysis results recently (post 96800) but didn't get a response. My zinc and selenium were high but I think that could be down to dandruff shampoo. Lots of other nutrients were only just within the ref range. I think the endo is testing my ferritin when my tsh is done but nothing else. I was folate anaemic but supplement that myself. Do you think it worth showing him my hair analysis results? Thanks again, I really don't know how you find the time, you are so helpful, understanding and knowledgeable, something sadly lacking within the medical profession regarding thyroid. Guest guest
Hi again Sheila I've just been looking through the file given to me in India on my discharge from hospital. I was admitted with a lower respiratory chest infection which because of my heart attack and stent was taken very seriously. One of the tests in the file is for haematology and appears to show I'm anaemic! I'll show this to the endo when I go but what is your opinion (which I value much more).
