opening files/attachments without word

Hello everyone

I have recently joined the forum and am looking through the files etc. However

I don't have word on my laptop and so am unable to open them properly. At the

moment I save them and then open with wordpad. However when doing this the text

has lots of symbols top and bottom and if there are studies/references etc in

the text symbols can also be dotted in the middle making it a bit difficult to

read and print out (I am hoping to print out some things for my GP).

I just wondered if anyone had found a way to open the attachments/files

correctly even if you don't have word on you computer? If not I will maybe look

into getting word but I just thought I'd ask first!
